Getting into the Spirit of Christmas

I used to hate Christmas. I made no secret of it, either. I used to be an angry young man who resented Christmas for imposing itself on him. There are a few reasons why I felt like that, but I’d rather not go into them here, thank you very much.

The good news is that a couple of years ago, when I was having a tough old time over the Christmas period, an ex-colleague of mine brought me out of it by basically forcing me to feel Christmassy. I guess it worked because I’m quite looking forward to Christmas, this year.

Still, I didn’t let that stop me from revisiting a couple of old songs and poems, and I even thought it’d be a good idea to buy a cheap Santa costume and to stand in front of a green screen. The result? Well, you can see for yourself:

 

 

It was actually a lot of fun to make these, and I still like the idea of subverting Christmas. Malcolm Middleton did it in his music video for We’re All Going to Die when he tried to land a Christmas number one, so it’s not like there isn’t precedent. And besides, I’m just having a lot of fun on YouTube.

Well hello, hello, hello, and welcome to the new-look DaneCobain.com! I’ve been working crazy hard over the last few days trying to rebuild my website and to create something that I can be proud of and which I feel is an accurate portrayal of my books and my writing. Hopefully this new-look website does it justice!

It has some pretty cool features built straight into it, including the ability for you to post reviews on the book pages, although I still generally forward people to Amazon anyway and that’s where reviews tend to do the most good. So while you’re more than welcome to post a review, they’re arguably much more useful when they’re on Amazon and Goodreads because that’s where the readers are. It is what it is.

In the coming weeks, I’m hoping to release a bunch of new features and functionality including a video library and a free downloads page, and I’m also in the process of relaunching my mailing list, so be sure to sign up if you’d like to be a part of that. And then there’s the content, much of which is coming soon but which I’m super excited about. There’s a new book coming soon, for a start…

“What is BookTube?” I hear you asking. Well, as the name suggests, it’s a sub-community within YouTube where people talk about books by posting reviews, hauls, tag videos and more, and I’ve been involved with it on and off for three or four years now. I used to make sporadic BookTube videos for my book blog’s YouTube channel, but I didn’t get much traction because I was more of a lurker than an active participant.

But now I’ve decided to start posting BookTube videos from my main channel and to spend more time talking to and interacting with the people that I watch. One of the perks of working from home, I guess, is the fact that I can watch pretty much whatever I want to on my big TV screen. But on top of that, I can take a quick break from whatever I’m doing to leave a comment and to talk books with other people who love them. Now I’m actively taking part, and people are being super supportive about it.
