Taking Classes for fun

Picture I did everything the "right" way as a kid. Including going to college for a responsible degree. I was always hyper practical as a teen. I worked a lot and enjoyed my job. My boss even told me at the time, if I didn't want to go to school she'd hire me full time and I'd be making more money than if I got a degree. Funny thing is she was probably right.

I sat with all the college applications around me at 15, and I talked myself out of doing what I wanted, because it wasn't practical. In one hand, I had Tulane University's Writing program. I still think about the day I put that aside because although I wanted to write, I knew it wouldn't pay the bills, and I was nothing if not practical.

On the other side of the coin was a university that was only a state away and had a business program. Now...back when I took it, a business degree was a valuable thing. Unfortunately, my generation was the first to battle the baby boomers for jobs, and it's value tanked.

I hated every single second of taking classes. Except for my entrepreneurship classes. Because I got to write a business plan. And although what I was writing still had to have concrete research and backing, I was writing.

I never made the connection that it was the creativity I was missing that made me detest my other classes so much. But I worked hard, got almost straight A's, and took extra class load to get my B.S. in 3 years instead of 4. I threw up a peace sign and went off to marry my husband, buy a house, and start my life.

It took me a long time to return to writing. It took me even longer to admit that there were other subjects that interested me too. Now all of a sudden I'm plunking down spare cash for online courses. I'm currently taking a Tarot class, just because I love using tarot cards and want to learn more about them.

You couldn't have convinced 21 year old me, who was graduating college that I would ever take a class for fun, but here we are.

Finding things I'm fascinated about and surrounding myself with others who want to learn the same topic feeds my soul in a way I never got from my college experience. I realize it was because when I was 15 I put aside a chance to go to NOLA to be practical. I can't go back in time and convince myself to apply to Tulane, but I can embrace education in a new way as an adult.

Traveling down this rabbit hole of self-help and self-discovery as a grown up, I'm not afraid to do things my way. And that includes taking a tarot class. To hell with being practical. It's time to find some passion projects. Who knows...maybe they'll make it into a book.

Do you take online classes? What are you doing that's bringing you joy in your life? I'd love to hear about it.

It's RELEASE DAY!

It's a tiny release day.  The first book in my new series, Tiny Houses, Big Hearts, hits the virtual shelves today.
If you follow me on any social media at all you are well aware of my obsession with the Tiny House Movement.

(If you don't follow me, I'm most active on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest.)

I fell hard for Tiny Houses and could not resist writing about them.
Love Shack  is my first full length contemporary and I hope you'll come along for the ride with me, and I dip my toes in a pool without fangs, fur, or gears.
Keep reading for a little tease of the love/hate drama I've got for you. Grab yourself a copy of Love Shack  and let me know what you think! I love hearing from my readers.

Living tiny doesn’t leave many places to hide. Tiny Houses, Big Hearts, Book 1Felicity Newhouse left a life of excess for a tiny house—and she’s never felt richer. She’d like to give back to the artisanal community who gave her wounded spirit a place to land, but she wants to do it on her own terms. Except she’s been turned down for a loan four times. And the fifth bank on her list isn’t looking too promising, either. The woman sitting across Brandon Halston’s desk must be out of her mind. Who’d want to live in a house the size of his walk-in closet, much less create an entire community of them? He’s drawn to her soft beauty and her ideals, but business is business. When her story hits the news, Brandon’s boss solves the PR nightmare by ordering him to spend a month in her house—while cameras roll. The heat between them boils over like the water for their morning coffee. But when one person is hiding who they really are, passion may not be enough to clean up the dirt someone is digging up behind the scenes.Warning: This book contains copious amounts of coffee and sex in confined spaces. If the tiny house is rockin’ don’t come a-knockin’.
Keep reading for an excerpt...
Brandon found a café that offered breakfast all day. He was getting pancakes. It wasn’t technically his cheat meal day, but since the diner didn’t serve alcohol and he was driving, he was getting pancakes.

His hostage—because that was basically what she was—pursed her lips and looked at the menu.

When the waitress came, Felicity ordered some kind of perverted version of a grilled chicken sandwich.

After their orders were placed and he had taken a drink of water, Brandon grabbed a notepad from his briefcase and opened it to a fresh page.

“Now...tell me about your plan again.”

“Why?”

“Because I need to tear it apart and figure out how to make myself look better while
making the plan good enough to follow through with.”

The woman across from him stopped mid-drink and just stared.

He clicked his pen so he could write, but it was obvious she wasn’t talking until he
explained.

“You wanted to get funding for your shanty project, right?”

“Tiny houses.”

“Whatever. You want money, right?”

“For tiny houses, yes.”

This woman was frustrating as hell, but with the reporter in her back pocket instead of
his, Brandon had to remember to not be rude. It took effort. “My boss wants to get in on the ground floor of this and write it o as a charity project.”

“But it’s only a charity project for me. I would be paying back my loan to the bank. Or I would have, if you’d approved me.”

“Whatever you say, lady. I just want to see how I can help make this not a total disaster.”

“I think I’m done with this meeting.” Ms. Newhouse stood to leave, but the waitress came back and pushed her down.

“Nope. I already put your order in, woman. You are getting your super special breadless sandwich cooked in olive oil, not lard. So sit your butt down, because that took me damn near five minutes to explain to the cook. I don’t speak Spanish and there was a lot of hand signals that went down to get your order right. Not all of them were of the polite variety.”

Ms. Newhouse sat. “I didn’t mean to be any trouble. I usually eat at home and that’s how I make it.”

“Well, you’s eatin’ here tonight, and I expect a tip when your order comes out perfect.
Got it?” She sauntered off and yelled at a patron who was sipping on a never-ending cup of coffee. “And buy some damn pie at least, Marshall.”

“She scares me,” his hostage said.

“Well, I’m tipping her fifty percent, because she kept you here. Now...” Brandon leaned forward, knowing he finally had the upper hand again. “Tell me about these shan...” He saw her narrow her eyes. “Tell me about these tiny houses.”

It's ALIVE!

Bottled Up is here!

Be one of the first to read my latest contemporary short. Below is an excerpt to get you ready to read.

I hope you enjoy Betty and Nate's story!

Bottled Up An April Fools For Love Story© 2016 Roxy Mews

A clogged drain. A pretend plumber. An April Fool’s Day to remember.
Good looks don’t last forever, and neither do modeling careers. When Nate’s time in the sun ends, he goes back to school. Trouble is, in order to pay for his last semester he’s going to need to get naked.
When a four month modeling contract took Nate Dallas on an adventure around the world, he was too young to realize he was an idiot to leave his Blue-eyed Betty behind. After one night of passion he let her love letters fade in his pocket instead of fighting for a trip home.
Betty Townsend never forgot about Nate. He’d sent her the world in envelopes filled with sea shells and sand. She saw stars when he kissed her under a sparkling spotlight on stage. And she felt her heart break when he never returned to her.
When Nate shows up at Betty’s door, big wrench in hand, she can’t believe her first love is the one her friend hired to fix the sink.
Once Nate recognizes Betty, stripping is out of the question. So is leaving. He can’t throw this chance away. The heat between them is undeniable, but when Betty finds out her first love is covered in glitter down to his g-string, do they stand a chance at rekindling the love that never really burned out? Or will fate make fools out of them again?

Enjoy the following excerpt from BottledUp:

Her brain had fried the second she’d realized it was Nate. She’d completely forgotten about the glossy paper with his oily pecs on it hanging over the frozen foods section of her home. The ad was an oldie, but a goodie, and the black sand he was standing on filled one of her bottles. The vitamin supplement wasn’t the reason the VitaBoost ad was pinned up with a magnet. It was a memory.
Nate was damn near naked and holding a huge barbell in front of his…
A laugh came from the kitchen.
“Ang, I gotta go.”
Her friend was sputtering as she ended the call, but it was Betty who was stumbling for words when she walked into the kitchen and found Nate holding the picture of himself. He cocked his eyebrow at her, and a dimple popped on his left cheek. It was something she’d fantasized about endlessly. But not while he was holding up proof she’d been pining for him after all this time.
“I didn’t even think they printed this anymore.”
They didn’t. She’d found an old magazine at a half price book store and snatched it up when she’d seen his face smoldering out at her.
“This is really embarrassing. It was a motivation pic for me,” she lied. “I’m on a diet…and…could I have that back?” She reached for the magazine page and he pulled it behind his body at an angle that she had no hope of reaching.
Well, she could reach it if she scaled him like a climbing wall. Her eyes dropped to what would be a hell of a foothold before she got her bearings and put her hands on her hips.
“You know you’re attractive.” Betty cleared her throat. “Attractive enough to not bother with me when you made it big and took off around the world.”
“You can’t know how sorry I am that I left things the way I did.” He handed her the picture back. “I thought you might have been keeping it for another reason. It’s not every day I see a picture of myself stuck to my ex’s fridge.”
“Were we together long enough to call it a relationship? Don’t worry about it, Nate. We were kids. Kids grow up, right?” She didn’t have time to feel foolish when he pulled his lips between his teeth. She felt the burn she’d never lost for him start to smolder. She should be mad at herself, but all she could really feel was longing. Remembering the job that had taken him away before they’d had a chance to explore each other, she closed the gap between them. She had to ask: “What would have happened if you hadn’t left?”
Nate’s hand rested on her face. He tilted her chin up and suddenly Betty was back in school. She was performing on stage, and Nate was still her Romeo. Only he didn’t have to leave for another country now. He was really here.
“I didn’t want to leave. By the time they got me back in the states, you were already in college, and…”
She had tried to forget about Nate in college. She’d gone out on dates. But they’d never made her feel the butterflies she’d felt with Nate. No one had her laughing with joy as she read a letter. No one else sent her souvenirs of the world. Now Nate was here, and it should be awkward. Instead his hand touched her and she couldn’t remember why she’d given up. He tucked a stray hair behind her ear and licked his lips. Her stomach fell out of her hoo-hah and flopped around at her feet like a fish out of water.
God, he was gorgeous.
But even with his stunning hazel eyes and adorable dimple, she realized she was keeping him from doing his job.
Betty coughed and stepped back. She ducked out of whatever spell he’d spun around her and waved her arm in the general direction of the sink. “I suppose I should let you get back to work. I promise, there will be no more pictures of yourself to distract you.”

Well…there wouldn’t be after she went to the bathroom and took the other one down.

Guest Post: Teresa Noelle Roberts brings you DRIVE

Teresa Noelle Roberts is stopping by today to share an excerpt from her new series "Cougars, Cars, and Kink". We shared a release day last week and we have both had a whirlwind of a time. (Samhain Publishing Readers are the best!) This book sounds fantastic. And DAYUM. Nice cover!
Drive (Cougars, Cars and Kink,Book 1)

“Thought-provoking, moving and bloody heart breaking – Ms. Roberts twists me all up inside again.[…] I loved this book from beginning to end. I cannot wait to read the next book in this series. I know it will be a treat. Highly recommended to kinky readers who are looking for an intimate maledom erotica without fancy gear or exclusive clubs.” La Crimson Femme
Excerpt:
This wasn’t fantasy desire. This was specific. All about the taste of Neil Callahan’s lips, the way his tongue invaded her mouth…no, not invaded, because invaders weren’t invited in and welcomed with ticker-tape parades, and if her mouth could, it would be throwing a parade right about now. All about the way he smelled like gingerbread in the salt air with its hint of suntan lotion. The way one big hand cradled the back of her head, controlling and tender at the same time. The way his broad chest and back felt as she scrambled to touch as much of him as she could, and if she was making a spectacle of herself, well, it was about time.
She hadn’t thought about it when Frank was still alive, but she’d always been in his shadow, the brilliant man’s pretty wife who stayed in the background. Or was kept there. He was never mean about it, but his work was his life, and his cars were his escape from work, and she didn’t have a role, other than “supportive cheerleader,” in either area. She’d given him the occasional verbal slap down when his confidence veered into arrogance or when he walked over her without even noticing he was doing it, but she let him do his thing because both Mayhew Robotics and the cars mattered so much to him.
Now it was time for her.
Seagulls’ cries and the hush and roar of surf mingled with the wet sounds of kissing, sharp intakes of breath, little groans she was startled, then amused, to realize she was letting loose. She’d worked one hand under Neil’s Dropkick Murphys T-shirt, getting to know roped muscle. He stroked her bare back and side underneath her shirt until she expected the prim little twist-front top to burst into flames from her rising heat. His hand crept forward and up and she thought—hoped—prayed—he’d touch her breast right there in the parking lot, under the cover of their twined bodies but still in public.
His hand ceased its journey, to her aching disappointment, but he kissed his way along her jaw to her ear, little, delicate brushes that made her shiver.
“We’re being watched,” he whispered, between small nips on her earlobe.
“Duh.” She didn’t bother to whisper. “We’re a little blatant with the PDA. I’m fine with that.”
He gripped the base of her ponytail, sending a thrill through her whole body, and tilted her head. He opened his mouth, let his teeth rest lightly around her throat. No pressure, just pure, primal possessiveness, and her body responded in kind, turning limp and liquid and compliant, ready to do whatever he suggested or demanded next.
His lips returned to her ear. “No,” he whispered. “Well, yeah. A few people are gawking. But I swear the guy from your driveway is in one of the other cars.”

Sounds fantastic, huh? You can get Drive at all book retailers who know how to have a good time, but here are some links.

He’s a kinky dream come true—and her only protection from danger.
Eight months after her (cheating, almost-ex) husband's death, Suzanne Mayhew has a plan to move on with her life. First step: sell off Frank's classic cars, starting with the red vintage Mustang convertible he never let her drive. Second step: get her unexplored kink on with a delicious younger man.
Preferably the one an old friend sends around, ostensibly to check out the Mustang. Neil Callahan—Boston cop, Dom, fifteen years her junior.
Neil feels the mutual sizzle, but if the blush staining her cheeks is any indication, her flirting skills are a little rusty. Though his instinct tells him to take things slow with the recent widow, he can’t resist inviting her along for a test drive—for the whole weekend.
Throwing caution to the wind, Suzanne takes him up on it. But they’re barely out of the driveway when Neil’s cop instincts kick in. They’ve got a tail…and it looks dangerously like her ex’s secrets looming large—and deadly—in their rear-view mirror.
Warning: Spies, lies and vile bad guys. A meddling BFF. Inappropriate use of kitchen tools. Completely appropriate use of rope and floggers. Your mileage may vary, depending on battery life.

Teresa Noelle Roberts started writing stories in kindergarten and she hasn’t stopped yet. A prolific author of short erotica, she’s also a published poet and fantasy writer—but hot paranormals, sexy science fiction romances and BDSM-spiced contemporaries have become her favorites.
When she’s not writing, Teresa enjoys belly dance, yoga, cooking, hiking, playing in the ocean and growing more vegetables than she and her husband can possibly eat. She’d enjoy sleeping too. She thinks. But it takes so much time!
She shares her Massachusetts home with her husband, a Leo in law enforcement, and three cats. She and her husband often plan vacations around food, history and/or proximity to water.

#ROBOSEX Take 2!

It's release day!

I'm so excited to finally get to share this book with all of you. Paisley took me for a ride while writing this. She took a couple of delicious men for a ride as well, and trust me...you're going to want a cool drink next to you while you read this one.

Psst...I'm telling you it's a scorcher.

My editor gave it a "Fracking Hot" rating.

I cannot wait to hear what you think. So tell me...have you read it yet? What did you think?

A human, an almost-human, and a more-than-human walk into a palace…The DMA Files, Book 2After her husband threw her out, Paisley Compton drew her sexuality around her like a shield. A Writer by Any Other Name...

So I've been thinking a lot about this lately and wanted to put it out there.

Psst...this one is only 99¢!I'm a writer.

I know. Don't fall over in shock. The fact that I'm promoting my books all the time should have clued me into this little fact...

But shockingly, it didn't. I was reluctant to call myself a writer.
I know many writers. I know professionals who have their own offices and keep a tight schedule and pump out books like crazy. I follow my idols and see them touting great reviews and best-seller monikers, and I know that they are legitimate writers. And I've read their books and they are awesome. Releasing Feb. 9th 2016!
So just in the past few weeks, I've been outing myself to people. When they ask what they do, the words "I'm a writer." have started coming out of my mouth hole.
Nobody made me say it. Nobody looked at my day job and said, "No...what do you really want to do?" It was just me. Something changed in me recently and I can't figure out when it happened.
You might ask why this is blog post worthy, but I have a feeling there are a few other people out there who get it. Giving myself that label...that title...it's scary. The title puts me in the same camp as some of my idols. (Which I couldn't ever compare to.)
I am reading through a book that I am insanely proud of today to get the final notes out this afternoon. It will be my sixth title with Samhain Publishing. Crazy, right?
For all the other writers out there, when did you start giving yourself the title? Did you always know you were a writer? Or did it sneak up on you like it did for me?

Love Shack...COVER REVEAL!!!

I've found a new obsession recently. I am in love with the Tiny House Movement.
Being able to tow your house around the country and having everything around you mean something to you, while utilizing every inch of space...well, I find it fascinating.
After I sufficiently scared my husband into thinking I might want to actually get one of these quaint little homes (in reality...I do), I used the next logical excuse all writers do and called it "research".
When I marathoned the full season of "Tiny House Nation" twice within two days, I had to either call it research or admit I have a problem.
So coming from Samhain Publishing mid-2016, keep your eyes out for "Love Shack"!

"Love Shack" is a contemporary romance set in an artisanal town and budding tiny house community.
This is the first in a new series called "Tiny Houses, Big Hearts".  I have two more books planned so far in this series, and I hope you all will come along for the ride with me as my characters find love in under 250 square feet.

Interlocking Hearts: DMA Files Book 2 [[COVER REVEAL]]

I am so excited for this book coming up in early 2016.

Coming to the end of edits is always a rush.

For me a book starts with frantic enthusiastic writing. I can't get the ideas on the page fast enough, because I write the characters that scream at me.

Paisley Compton was one of those characters that truly knocked my socks off.

I had to treat her right, so she got two men.

COMING from SAMHAIN PUBLISHING 2016

A human, an almost human, and a robot walk into a palace...

Interlocking Hearts

So? What do you think? I am excited for all of you to meet my heroes. Can you guess which one is applying for his certificate of humanity?
