Discussing FORTUNE on The Comics Panel

I recently appeared on The Comics Panel, a YouTube show produced locally that takes on all sorts of comic-related topics.

The gang was kind enough to let me talk about FORTUNE, the comic book I created with Dillon Samuelson. We also talked about the true-crime essays I’ve written for the back of THE BLACK HOOD comic book.

Many thanks to the entire Comics Panel team! I had a great time.

If you’d like to read FORTUNE, it’s available here:

Digital Edition ($0.99) from Comixology Print Edition...

The Throes of Crime – Coming Soon

My first book, THE THROES OF CRIME (a short story collection), is scheduled to be released on September 27!

The skull (how cool is that skull?) was created by artist Dillon Samuelson. When the book is released, I’ll post an interview with Dillon about the process of creating it.

3 Netflix Recommendations

Here’s a quick look at a movie and two television shows Beth and I watched on Netflix (and enjoyed!) recently.

Swerve, an Australian crime film:

Halt and Catch Fire, an AMC show about creating computers in the early to mid 1980s.

The Lava Field, a show about an apparent suicide in Iceland. (Although the only trailer I could find is subtitled in Dutch, the U.S. Netflix version is subtitled in English. Also, it looks like this is called The Cliff in some places — and the four episodes current...

Birchwood Resort – Abandoned Resort in the Poconos

On the way to Broke Hack Mountain, Jon McGoran and I stopped by an abandoned resort in the Poconos to take a few photos.

All of the buildings were exactly as seen here (e.g., all open doors were open when we arrived).

Click on any of the photos for high-resolution versions.

Broke Hack Mountain

broke_hack_mountainSix writers. One cabin. Very limited cell service.

What could possibly go wrong?

Rob Hart organized a writing retreat over the long Fourth of July weekend, christened it Broke Hack Mountain, and it was extremely productive. Rob invited Todd Robinson, Jon McGoran, Josh Bazell, Dan Krokos, and me to come along, and we spent a ton of time pounding away on our keyboards. And eating. And making fire. And eating. And snoring.

Rob’s summary of the weekend is great: Broke Hack Mountain: A Recap, and...

N@B in Queens was Amazing

Alex Segura and Scott Adlerberg know how to throw a party.

Noir at the Bar in Queens was amazing. I’m still pinching myself to make sure that’s really me in this photo of outstanding authors:

Noir at the Bar in Queens - June 2016

Left to right, that’s Alex Segura, the nearly hidden William Boyle, Angel Luis Colón, Jill Block, Lawrence Block, Sarah Weinman, Scott Adlerberg, me (nearly fading into the background), Jen Conley, Thomas Pluck, and Rob Hart. Lyndsay Faye is seated in front of the gang, and I think Jason Starr had to le...

“A Decent Hand” in Spanish

Cuentos En EspanolMy short story “A Decent Hand” — about a Poker player in Wilmot, South Dakota, in February 1884 — is now available in Spanish.

In fact, this is the first publication anywhere for “A Decent Hand” since it has not yet been published in English. (It was accepted, but the publication ended operations before “A Decent Hand” was published.)

Read it here: Una Mano Decente

Translation by Carolina Maria Russo-Holding. “A Decent Hand” is my 16th story available in Spanish. All of the translations are a...

Plus (as if you need more reasons to join us), my old Shotgun Honey buddies Angel Luis Co...

My Place on the Packers Season Ticket Waiting List

Darren Rovell, a senior writer for ESPN, recently detailed his experience on the Green Bay Packers season ticket waiting list.

He joined the list in 2006 at spot number 73,257. Today, he’s 60,766.

That makes me feel absolutely giddy about my spot on the list.

I joined in 1999 at number 27,611. Every year, the Packers send a postcard which includes my updated spot on the list. Here’s how my spot has changed through the years:

1999: 27,611
2001: 27,219
2002: 22,555 (an expansion of Lambeau Fie...
