Book Description:
November in New York is cold but full of possibility for college freshman Erin Harris. When her twin brother, Nick, shows up on her doorstep for a surprise visit, Erin is delighted. Unfortunately, Nick’s arrival coincides with the discovery of a body outside her apartment building, a body drained of blood. Right away, Nick assumes vampires are involved. He’s not exactly their biggest fan since Erin dated one in high school.
Juggling nosy roommates, a first date with a gorgeous guy from college and a brother on a Van Helsing kick is enough to keep any nineteen year old girl busy – And then Erin’s old flame walks back into her life.
Is Erin destined to be caught up in supernatural shenanigans, or will she choose a different path?
*Beneath Manhattan Skies is a standalone story, following the character Erin Harris from Under the Desert Moon.
Excerpt:
Calm down, a soothing inner voice advised. Could be wishful thinking and nothing more. She wanted so desperately to see James, she was inventing vampire activity where there likely was none. Maybe the girl had simply suffered the hickey from hell. No. Erin’s gut told her she’d got it right the first time.
Max led the girl away. Lucky for him, in his cozy world, his friend was simply drunk, and vampires didn’t exist. Erin trailed them until they left the roof. At least the girl was alright. Nothing an iron tablet wouldn’t fix.
“Erin, you okay?” Sadie peered closer. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

Book Description:
Three Fates. Three Sisters.
When a will from her dead father decrees Chloe into the protection of the renowned vampire commander, Tyrian en Kulev, she does what any woman would do—and casts a spell. Things get worse for Chloe when the spell she and her sisters perform summons an ancient demon from deep within the earth. Now she’s being hunted by a demon set on killing her and must live at the aptly named Castle Death with the king of cold, Tyrian. Surprisingly, Chloe finds that she doesn’t mind her new Protector so much. His cold, impassionate nature needs a firm push to show his true colors, and Chloe thinks she’s just the one to do it.
Tyrian en Kulev always pays his debts. When Francis Bellum dies and orders Tyrian to act as his eldest daughter’s Protector, Tyrian resigns himself to the position. What should have been a simple deal–keep her in the castle, protect her–has turned difficult. Chloe comes to him with a demon trying to kill her and a sexy attitude that keeps invading his thoughts everywhere he goes. The little succubus easily grabs hold of the heart he’d kept locked away for so long and makes him feel once again. But can they defeat the demon that haunts her and can Tyrian overcome his past and move on to a new future with Chloe?
Short Excerpt:
“This situation is one that neither of us seems to want.” For some reason, the fact that he didn’t want her miffed her. Just a little.
“Then let me go.” He didn’t shake his head, but she sensed the refusal in him.
“Impossible. I am sealed by a debt of honor to your father. I will uphold it, no matter how complicated this matter is. The rules I mentioned before still stand and will never change.”
He had a mouth that if wasn’t pulled into that tight line might be kissable, even lickable. Dang, Chloe. What’s wrong with you? Checking out the captor? She was crazy.
“Honestly, who upholds any of that old school stuff anyway? No one. My Papa didn’t even pay into the whole patriarchal thing. Seriously, we were raised to be independent and taught not to rely on a man. That fact that he’s…he’s given me to you is ridiculous and completely wrong for him. Just let me go and we’ll call it even. Your debt paid.”
“I can’t do that, Ms. Bellum. I will not dishonor your father and the vow I made to repay my debt to him. You will stay here, under my protection.”
She scoffed. “And where is here?” His voice was like cold ice running over her. It pebbled her nipples and brought goose bumps over her skin but not in a pleasurable way.
“You are at my castle in Norway. We are near the Jorgmund, the biggest hole in the rift, where we get the most lapses. Many of the Atal Warriors are stationed below the castle.”
Chloe squeezed her eyes shut. Think! Okay, what would her sisters do? Willow was probably already near China. No one could ever stop her, and Lily would probably try to perform some voodoo to get free.
She took a deep breath, which did the opposite of calming her, because she accidentally drew in his scent. She gasped and felt a flash of pleasure surge through her. He smelled as a man should, like something she could lick and bite and sink her teeth into over and again.
Oh God, what am I doing thinking thoughts like that! She was losing her mind. First, her Papa died leaving her to this nonsense, and now she was stuck with the most notorious man in the world. She would escape. She could do that. He didn’t seem intent upon hurting her and she might even be able to use the fact that he was indebted to her Papa to gain some leverage, if necessary.
Escape. Her mind whirled with possibilities. Like how the heck did she get out of Norway and to an airport? She didn’t even have any money on her.
“We need to discuss what will occur at the next new moon.” The thought she’d been having came to an abrupt stop in her head. Her eyes slammed open and her back dug into the door to try to get away from him.
“You can’t…we can’t,” she said, shaking her head to clear it. “No way,” she said finally. The commander turned around and marched away. She took a deep breath; it was as if he sucked up all the air in the room with his presence. Now she could breathe, but it didn’t smell as delicious as it did when he was near.
She tightened her grip on the towel to keep it from sliding down and embarrassing the hell out of her while she slowly, quietly slipped her free hand behind her. Her heart was beating so hard and fast, she prayed he couldn’t hear it. Could vampires hear such things? She reached, searching for the door handle.
“Something must be done. I am sure you are aware of the changes that you will go through at the new moon.”
Chloe glared at him. He knew just the right things to say to piss her off. “I am a succubus; of course I know. Better than you, I’m sure,” she said without hiding the sarcasm in her voice. “And I am not doing that with you,” she added for good measure.
He brought those eyes back to her, seemingly assessing everything about her. From the red nail polish on her toes to the not-perfectly-thin figure she sported. She clutched the towel tighter around her and did what she knew Willow would do. She glared at him with a look that clearly said fuck you.
“That is more than acceptable to me. I am sure you can find any number of willing males around the castle for your time of need. I’d recommend one of my closest guards because I sincerely trust them. If they do not meet your standards, perhaps one of the other Atal Warriors that reside below the castle. Please feel free to ask any of them. I shall not announce it to them in order to spare your privacy.”
Chloe thought his proclamation might be sweet if he didn’t say it with a tone that bordered on arctic. Though she couldn’t help but think that he was acting as her pimp with the suggestion. Bastard. Handsome bastard with a nasty scar that kept drawing her gaze. What was the story behind it? Every scar had a story, no matter how simple. Never mind, it didn’t matter. She was getting the hell out of here.

Christmas Past by Susanna Fraser
Christmas Past
Susanna Fraser
Entangled Ever After
Release Date: November 25, 2013
Book Description:
Time-traveling PhD student Sydney Dahlquist’s first mission sounded simple enough—spend two weeks in December 1810 collecting blood samples from the sick and wounded of Wellington’s army, then go home to modern-day Seattle and Christmas with her family. But when her time machine breaks, stranding her in the past, she must decide whether to sacrifice herself to protect the timeline or to build a new life—and embrace a new love—two centuries before her time.
Rifle captain Miles Griffin has been fascinated by the tall, beautiful “Mrs. Sydney” from the day he met her caring for wounded soldiers. When he stumbles upon her time travel secret on Christmas Eve, he vows to do whatever it takes to seduce her into making her home in his present—by his side.
Excerpt:
“What is that thing?”
His voice shook a little, she thought. But not much. He was an officer and a gentleman, so he couldn’t let himself freak out over something new and strange. If he was scared, he hid it well. She admired that. As a time traveler, she tried to live by the same kind of code.
“A carriage, sir,” she said. “And a broken one, at that.”
“No, Mrs. Sydney,” Captain Griffin said in a tone that reminded her of Professor Krakowski in lecture mode. “Itappears to be a carriage, externally. Inside is something very different. I saw it. I may not understand the evidence of my eyes, but I’ve never been given to hallucinations. And,” he added with a musing, distant look that called her mentor even more strongly to mind, “if I were to suddenly take leave of my senses, I doubt very much I should hallucinate something I’d never imagined existed before.”
Disguise had failed, so she must distract and deflect. “I don’t see why not,” she said. “After all, isn’t that how strange religions start?”
He shrugged. “Perhaps. But you’re no angel, are you? Although,” he allowed, “you’re tall and golden enough for one.”
She shook her head. There had been concern among the review board that at 5’11” she was too tall a woman to go more than a hundred years into the past. Time travelers were supposed to blend in to their destinations. “No,” she said. “Anyway, I’m shorter than you.”
He smiled. It wasn’t fair how the expression made him look even hotter, with white teeth straighter than anyone born before orthodontics had a right to in a soldier’s sun-browned face. “Not by much. But stop trying to distract me. I know what I saw.”
She crossed her arms and tried to look lofty. “What if I told you it was none of your concern and refused to say more?”
Now he grinned, a wicked twinkle in his eye. “Then I should be obliged to found a strange religion based on my suppositions. How do you think I would do as a mad preacher, ma’am? On Christmas Eve, I saw the most celestial vision …”
He wouldn’t. He couldn’t. “You’re far too rational a gentleman to do anything so mad,” she said.
“True. But—hang it all, Mrs. Sydney, you must tell me something!” Now his voice shook, and she could hear the fear and amazement he’d been working to hide. “You cannot expect a man to see a light that glows bright as sunlight without a flicker of flame or a—a portrait frame that changes its contents with the touch of a fingertip, and walk away and never think of it again.”
She bit her lip and fought to control her shaking breath. Maybe she could’ve passed off the electric light as some new and improved oil lamp, but he’d seen her iPad. What could she do now? She couldn’t think of a single lie that wouldn’t make everything worse. The Protocol made no allowances for this, but he’d already seen too much to be distracted or deflected, and wasn’t it safer for such a curious man to know the truth? Who knew how badly he’d destroy the timeline with his guesses if she left him ignorant.
“It’s my time machine,” she said in her own accent, “my broken time machine. I was—I will be born in 1987. I came here from America in 2013.”
About the Author:
Susanna Fraser wrote her first novel in fourth grade. It starred a family of talking horses who ruled a magical land. In high school she started, but never finished, a succession of tales of girls who were just like her, only with long, naturally curly and often unusually colored hair, who, perhaps because of the hair, had much greater success with boys than she ever did.
Along the way she read her hometown library’s entire collection of Regency romance, fell in love with the works of Jane Austen, and discovered in Patrick O’Brian’s and Bernard Cornwell’s novels another side of the opening decades of the 19th century. When she started to write again as an adult, she knew exactly where she wanted to set her books. Her writing has come a long way from her youthful efforts, but she still gives her heroines great hair.
Susanna grew up in rural Alabama. After high school she left home for the University of Pennsylvania and has been a city girl ever since. She worked in England for a year after college, using her days off to explore history from ancient stone circles to Jane Austen’s Bath.
Susanna lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and daughter. When not writing or reading, she goes to baseball games, sings alto in a local choir and watches cooking competition shows.

Interview with Dr. Charley Ferrer – America’s BDSM Expert
I’m very excited to have Dr. Charley Ferrer, host and founder of the annual BDSM Writers Conference, with me today on my blog.
Me: It’s a pleasure to have you today! Thanks for stopping by my blog.
Dr. Charley Ferrer: Hi A.C., it’s a pleasure to be here. Thanks for having me.
Me: First, how did you get started as a Sex Therapist and ultimately what led you to become an expert on the BDSM lifestyle?
Dr. Charley Ferrer: When I was working on my Masters in Counseling Psychology, I discovered that many therapists were uncomfortable discussing sex with their patients. Some therapist pushed their own values and morals onto their patients condemning them for their sexual preferences, deeming their patients’ natural desires pathological and in need of extensive therapy. I found that atrocious. Half way through my Masters, I enrolled in a Doctorate program which was dedicated to all aspects of human sexuality. I went on to establish the Institute of Pleasure as a way to provide men and women with the ability to obtain sexual education and therapy without prejudice. My company motto is: It is not my place to judge nor condemn another’s sexuality, merely to provide them with education both new and old and let them make their own choice. This is never more appropriate than for individuals who participate in alternative lifestyles such as Dominance and submission or are gay or lesbian. For the past twenty years, I’ve been teaching workshops throughout US, Latin America, Canada and recently China advocating for sexual education and reform. Because of my advocacy work in dominance and submission, I’ve been dubbed America’s BDSM Expert.
Me: Can you tell my readers what made you decide to establish a writing conference devoted to BDSM romance?
Dr. Charley Ferrer: Authors and readers needed a place to come together! A place where this unique genre could discuss their desires. Where authors could learn what their readers wanted to read and readers could provide their feedback. Another underlying reason I created BDSM WRITERS CON was to educate authors in the realities and truths about the power exchange. For years, I’ve read novels which portrayed the BDSM lifestyle inappropriately; perpetuating the same false misconceptions and half-truths begun by Hollywood and the media. Many beliefs were mired in fear and prejudices. Not only did these misconceptions hurt individuals who embraced Dominance and submission making it a “sickness” to overcome; just as twenty and thirty years ago being Gays and Lesbians was seen with this same lens. This continued misinformation has created emotional and psychological damage to men and women who identify themselves as kinksters and who embrace these desires. Many of whom have been ostracized, lost their jobs and families and have suffered many countless discrimination.
In 2005, I “come out of the leather closet” myself and began teaching the medical and mental health community about the truths related to Dominance and submission. I even spoke before the World Congress of Sexology and the International Medical Congress in Latin America on the need for sexual reform and education. As the years went by, it dawned on me that in other to educate the masses, I had to go to the source and that included authors; many of which took pride in their craft and did there research. Unfortunately, so many others don’t and perpetuate the same misconceptions passed down over the years reinforcing fears and prejudices.
Me: You’ve written BDSM The Naked Truth and BDSM for Writers as educational resources for readers and writers to learn more about BDSM culture. What type of research went into writing these books?
Dr. Charley Ferrer: I’ve been exploring and participating in the world of Dominance and submission for almost twenty years; since I first discovered the BDSM community. Prior to that, I always wondered why my desires were so vastly different from everyone else I knew and why my “vanilla” relationships weren’t working. When I entered my first BDSM Club, I finally realized I wasn’t crazy or perverted but totally normal. I was just swimming in the wrong Pond, so to speak.
I wrote BDSM The Naked Truth to provide valuable information about the emotional and psychological connections individuals make in this uniquely erotic and misunderstood lifestyle. It’s perfect for beginners and the curious seeker. It’s a must read book for anyone in the helping professions and law enforcement. It also provides more experienced practitioners with information on how to create scenes, train-a-slave, and more.
BDSM for Writers is similar however it’s geared specifically for authors providing them with secrets only individuals who embrace the lifestyle would know to assist them in creating believable and in-depth characters their readers would come to love. This is one resource book no author in this genre should be without. I’m also proud to say that Joey W. Hill provided the forward for my book.
Me: I write BDSM romance for a variety of reasons but the main reason is because I love reading it and I’m fascinated by the conscious and unconscious emotional ties that subs feel toward submission. The psychology is very deep and profound. So I’ll ask you the number one question writers probably ask you all the time. How do you bring that authenticity to your characters so that the story rings true?
Dr. Charley Ferrer: In order to create authentic characters, it’s imperative to do your research. Though romance novels are “fiction”, the relationship and power dynamic they’re portraying in the BDSM genre isn’t! Not doing your research is akin to writing a novel about a lesbian and having her fall in love with a man. Or writing a war story and overlooking the fact that people die and soldiers are called upon to kill others in defense of their country.
Through my workshops, eCourses, Teleseminars, books and the upcoming BDSM Writers Con in August 2014, I provide authors with the valuable and necessary information they need to create submissive and dominant characters that are real and full of depth. Characters which portray the love and respect which is the foundation of a D/s relationship. Characters readers will fall in love with. I also teach the general public how to embrace their true nature and find comfort in their desires and curiosity.
Me: This is a writing conference but it’s for readers too. What do you have planned for BDSM romance readers and fans this year?
Dr. Charley Ferrer: Though the conference is called BDSM Writer Con, it’s for everyone interested in writing about or exploring the world of dominance and submission. Readers can expect to participate in over 40-hours’ worth of workshops and live demonstrations on various aspects of the BDSM lifestyle including bondage workshops, flogging, and panel discussions by Dominants and submissives and much more. Readers also get to learn beside their favorite authors; and in some workshops, actually learn from the authors themselves.
We have several Mix & Mingles planned where authors and readers can let down their hair or “be pulled by it” (smiles) and enjoy time with each other. There’s a special BDSM Club Night planned where participants can immerse themselves in the lifestyle for a few hours in the comfort and safety of friends. Participants can experience a spanking or another BDSM activity or merely allow their voyeuristic nature free rein. Should I mention the Book Signing Sunday event or all the additional parties the authors are planning themselves? What about our monthly giveaways?
Me: And where can readers find more information about the conference? Where can they go to register?
Dr. Charley Ferrer: Readers can go to BDSM Writers Con to register. We are currently offering a $50 discount off the early bird registration through December 31. Readers and authors can also sign-up for our easy payment plan and be entered to win various prizes. Plus our group of amazing authors is giving away something new every month to participants.
Me: Well I’m really excited about the 2014 BDSM for Writers conference! Your keynote speaker this year is Joey W. Hill. I’m a huge paranormal romance and BDSM romance reading fan. Her first book in the Vampire Queen Series, the Vampire Queen’s Servant, explores D/s through a vampire/servant relationship. She goes back and forth between the heroine and hero point of view, often within the same scene, so smoothly. I can’t wait! But until next year… do you have anything else you’d like to share with my readers?
Dr. Charley Ferrer: Joey is my favorite author as well. And she’s promised me Jacob’s clone–the Vampire Queen’s male servant.
I’d like to invite everyone to BDSM WRITERS CON. I guarantee you won’t find a better introduction to Dominance and submission anywhere or a more exciting and thrilling way to spend time with your favorite authors.
Me: I’m so jealous… I need a Jacob clone! Again, it’s been a pleasure having you. Thanks for stopping by my blog!
Dr. Charley Ferrer: Thanks for having me. I invite your readers to feel free to ask questions. They can also visit my website, BDSM Writers Con to view some of the FAQ there. I provide answers through the FAQ & Video sections. Live with passion.

Oh, how I hate bios! All of that deadly dull information about name (Barbara Bretton) and date of birth (June 25) and geographical data (born in New York City; lives near Princeton, NJ), marital status (many years married), and hobbies (who has time??). How do you gather up all of those dull, dry facts and turn them into something interesting?
No wonder I tell lies for a living.
I considered weaving a story for you about life on a houseboat on the French Riviera. Or maybe my years as a concubine, hidden away in a golden pleasure palace in the shimmering desert. Then I decided to do the unthinkable and tell you the truth.
When I sold my first book and my life changed forever. I sent in my manuscript on Thursday February 21, 1982 and four days later the telephone rang and I heard the amazing words, “We want to buy your book.” How I wish you could have seen me. I was standing by the kitchen door of our North Babylon house, the picture of cool sophistication, as I listened to Vivian Stephens explain the terms of the deal to me. You would have thought I’d sold a first book every single day of my life. Yes, I said. Sounds wonderful. Thank you so much for calling. I look forward to our association. That cool sophistication hung on until I hung up the phone, took a deep breath, then promptly threw up on my shoes.
I was thirty-one years old, unagented, unschooled, unfamiliar with anything to do with the business of publishing. To put it mildly, I was in shock. My husband was working in Manhattan at the time (and finishing up his degree at night) so it would be hours until I could break the news to him. This was too exciting to waste on a phone call. I wanted to see his face when I told him that my dream had finally come true — and came with a $6000 advance!
He pulled into the driveway at midnight. I was waiting in the doorway, holding a bottle of champagne and two glasses. I didn’t have to say a word. He knew right away and the look of joy and pride in his eyes warms me now, years later, long after the advance faded into memory.
A lot has happened to me in the years since that first sale. I’ve learned that this is a difficult and demanding business (it takes a tough writer to write a tender book) and that I am happiest when I am most ignorant. I’ve also learned that a good friend, a writer and pal who truly understands, is worth her weight in good reviews and royalty checks.
I fell madly in love with Skye O’Malley in early 1982 and wrote an unabashedly gushy fan letter to our beloved Bertrice Small. By the time Sunny answered, I had joined the ranks of the published and Sunny became friend and mentor, guide and confidant. She has held my hand through broken dreams, disappointments, family illnesses, and accepted my bizarre need to go underground from time to time with great affection and understanding. Over the years I’ve come to understand the difference between the writer and her work, that loving the book doesn’t guarantee that I will love the author. But what a joy it is when you discover that the author of a beloved favorite is even more wonderful and witty and wise than the characters she creates.
So this bio is for you, Sunny, for being the best of friends during the worst of times and — even more wonderful — during the good times as well.

Charley headed to the designated area in front of the forward elevator bank on deck eight. In case a good shot availed itself, she kept her camera bag with her. She reached inside the specially made backpack and felt her way to the camera sling. Her Canon EOS 5D Mark III was at the top and she dug for the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L lens and its EW-83F hood. Her hand wrapped around it and pulled it from its snug memory foam compartment. She walked up the one deck from their cabin while attaching the lens best suited for close, low-light shots.
Even only having seen that small percentage of the ship, she had to admit it was not at all cramped or claustrophobic. When she saw an officer talking to a group of passengers, she immediately clicked off a few pictures. He was tall. His chest and shoulders filled out the white uniform and he smiled easily at the three women who peppered him with questions while batting their eyelashes shamelessly. The youngest of the three looked to be at least ten years older than the sailor.
Charley zoomed in on his bright blue eyes and neatly cropped dark, curly hair. He seemed genuinely interested in what the women were saying. If she had to guess, the handsome officer must have known the passengers. She clicked several more pictures.
His eyes turned toward her. There was a moment of surprise, followed by a slow, private smile. Inside her lens he was so close he penetrated her comfort zone. Charley felt her cheeks flush and she took the camera away from her face.
He’d caught her with her hand in the cookie jar. She’d invaded his privacy and he smiled warmly across the expanse of blue carpet. But he didn’t look the least bit offended. Normally she asked people if she could photograph them, though spontaneous pictures always turned out better. Making a conscious effort to slow her heart and ignore her embarrassment, she felt her cheeks cool slightly.
The officer said his polite goodbyes to the ladies and walked over to Charley. “Miss Ballantine?”
“Yes.” Immediately her cheeks flushed again. He smelled of a musky cologne, soap and man. What the hell was wrong with her? She shook herself out of her mesmerized state. “I’m Charlene Ballantine, sorry I’m late.”
He frowned for an instant. “I was told Charley.”
Her cheeks were on fire and her heart beat so hard that it was a wonder he didn’t comment on the infernal noise. “Charley is fine.”
He held out his hand. “I’m Kyle Macintyre, the ship’s first officer. I’m assigned the task of showing you the bridge. The captain asked that I tell you what you may and may not do while aboard.”
“They sent me a list of dos and don’ts.” Her voice was a bit steadier.
There was that smile again. “Yes, I’m sure the line sent you a laundry list, but since you’re not part of the crew and you have had no shipboard training, Captain Cristou likes to make certain they’ll be no trouble.”
She nodded dumbly, intoxicated by the deep, warm sound of his voice. “Who were those women?”
If the question surprised him he didn’t show it. “Mrs. Jones and her two daughters. They’re taking a family vacation.”
“Do you know them?”
He cocked his head to one side. “I just met them. Why do you ask?”
She shrugged, wishing she could keep her mouth shut. She supposed the question was out of context, but she was curious. “It looked as if you knew them.”
Turning the digital display on her camera around, she showed him the pictures she’d taken. He stood very close as she scrolled through the dozen shots she snapped while he was unaware. Her shoulder brushed against his arm.
The warmth of his body spread through her as if she were standing too close to a furnace. She’d lost her mind. That was the only explanation. Since her divorce, men had been the last thing she wanted. She’d spent a year in therapy trying not to think of them as the enemy and she’d made progress. She’d even gone on a couple of dates that hadn’t ended in disaster. But this sailor had an effect on her that none of the men she’d come in contact with had. Her pulse was tripping wildly and she thought running away would be a great idea. In fact, better to get as far away from Kyle Macintyre as possible. Unfortunately, that wasn’t an option.
He smiled brightly. “It does. You know, I’ve been doing this for so long, I’ve just learned that on a short cruise you don’t have much time to get to know people. I make friends quickly.”
She took a step away from his arousing scent and warm body.
“I’ll bet you do.” Sarcasm dripped from her words. She thought of looking around to see if her mother was behind her. No, it had been her. Shit.
He frowned, but was still so gorgeous she could barely look at him. “I think I should be insulted by the way you said that, Miss Ballantine, but I’m going to reserve my reaction until I know you better.”

Book Description:
Hayley had sworn off bad boys until Finn Rafferty set out to win her heart…
Once upon a time, Hayley had believed that a good woman (her) could turn a bad boy (her ex) into a knight in shining armor (pure fantasy). Ten years of marriage had finally drummed the truth into her head. In the real world bad boys didn’t turn into knights in shining armor. Bad boys grew up to be even worse men and the world would be a much happier place if little girls were taught that basic fact along with their ABCs.
Hayley Maitland Goldstein knew all about how these things worked. First a girl giggled, then she sighed, and the next thing you knew she was in Vegas taking her wedding vows in front of a red-haired Elvis with an overbite. You knew you had made a bad choice when Elvis slipped you his divorce lawyer’s business card while you were still shaking the rice from your hair.
But then Finn Rafferty came into her life and everything changed.
Hayley should have seen the kiss coming but it surprised her just the same. He had been looking at her with a crazy kind of unfocused intensity and she had been about to ask him if he was having a stroke when she realized she was about to be kissed by a man she actually wanted to kiss back.
Every now and then life handed you a perfect moment but the secret was figuring out how to make it last.

Excerpt:
Trish, one of the high school girls Hayley was currently mentoring, burst into the kitchen looking like she had just bumped into Justin Timberlake and then ricocheted off Johnny Depp.
“There’s two guys outside who want to see you and they’re unbelievably hot!” Trish was seventeen, the age when the arrival of any biped with a Y chromosome rated a breathless announcement. “One of them looks like a rock star from, you know, way back in the eighties.”
Ouch. She had been Trish’s age in the eighties.
“A rock star?” she asked, lifting a brow. Rock stars were in short supply in Lakeside.
“A rock star,” Trish confirmed. “And he’s wearing leather.”
There was only one reason an aging leather-clad hottie would show up at Goldy’s Bakery at three o’clock on a Wednesday afternoon and it had nothing to do with brownies, cheesecake, or bagels.
“Tell him Mr. Goldstein doesn’t live here anymore.” And that Mrs. Goldstein couldn’t be happier about it. Not even sending him his monthly share of the store’s profits dimmed her joy.
“But he didn’t ask for Mr. Goldstein. He asked for you.”
Why did that surprise her? She was the Goldstein with a bank balance, after all. It had been a while since someone had come looking for her ex but the knot in her stomach was painfully familiar. The faint stench of danger still lingered in the air. She wished she had a dollar for every angry enabler who had shown up at Goldy’s in search of the reluctant Mr. Goldstein. She’d be able to buy him out once and for all and still have money to spare.
“Then tell him I’m not here.”
“But, Mrs. G., I already told him you were.”
“Then tell him the truth,” she said. “I’m busy working on a cake that should have been finished an hour ago. I can’t spare a second.” And here she’d thought her life would settle down after Michael moved to Florida to mooch off his mother. The man’s problems had the half-life of uranium.
Trish rearranged her pretty features into an even prettier frown. “He really wants to see you, Mrs. G. Maybe—”
Hayley could feel the hot breath of the Cumberland County Association of Female Realtors on the back of her neck. She whipped out The Look, the same look every mother on the planet had down cold, aimed it in Trish’s direction, then hoped for the best.
“I’ll tell him,” Trish mumbled, then pushed through the swinging door to deliver the bad news.
The Look had stopped working on Lizzie when she was seven, but it was nice to know she still had enough maternal firepower at her command to keep her young staff in line.
She pressed her ear against the swinging door but she couldn’t make out Trish’s words, just a high apologetic string of female sounds that was followed by a male rumble. Leather Boy had a good voice, baritone, a little smoky. She couldn’t make out his words either but Trish’s answering giggle conjured up some painful memories of herself at that age.
She listened closer. Trish said something girly. Leather Boy rumbled something manly. This time Rachel, her other counter girl for the week, giggled too, a sound that sent Hayley’s maternal early-warning system into overdrive.
Rachel Gomez was a serious straight-A student bound for Princeton next year on full scholarship. She needed the paycheck more than any mentoring Hayley might have provided her. Rachel had probably never giggled before in her life.
If Rachel giggled, then even Lizzie might not be immune. Fourteen was when it started, that fizzy sensation in your veins, the yearning for things you couldn’t define, the sudden realization that boys were infinitely more interesting than global warming or the fate of the humpback whale.
Fourteen was also when young girls parted company with their self-confidence and traded in their love of math and science for a date for the prom.
Sometimes she wanted to lock Lizzie away in her room with her computer, her books, and a cell phone (maybe), and not let her out again until she was twenty-one. Thirty sounded better but even fantasies had their limits. The advisor at Olympia Prep had suggested that Lizzie might be better served intellectually by skipping the rest of high school and starting college in the fall but Hayley was dead set against it. Lizzie might be brilliant when it came to science but when it came to life, she was still only fourteen.
The world could be a scary place. A mother did her best to protect her kid from fast cars, drunk drivers, broken bones, flu, the common cold, but there was nothing she could do to protect her kid from growing up. No matter what you did or how well you did it, your little girl wasn’t going to stay a little girl. Right before your eyes she was going to grow up on you anyway and all you could do was pray she didn’t follow in your foolish footsteps.
Once upon a time, Hayley had believed that a good woman (her) could turn a bad boy (her ex) into a knight in shining armor (pure fantasy). Ten years of marriage to Michael Goldstein had finally drummed the truth into her head. People didn’t change with time. They just became more of who they were to begin with.
In the real world bad boys didn’t turn into knights in shining armor. Bad boys grew up to be even worse men and the world would be a much happier place if little girls were taught that basic fact along with their ABCs.
Why didn’t women teach their young how to cope with the things that were really important instead of how to walk in their first pair of heels? Why didn’t they make a point of sitting their girl children down and telling them the truth about men instead of letting some guy in a leather jacket seduce them over a tray of black-and-white cookies?
That was one of the many reasons why she had helped institute the mentoring program at the high school. Lizzie claimed her overflow worrying needed an outlet but it went far deeper. She saw herself in those girls, insecure, struggling, hungry for love, and ready to hand over their futures to the first guy who came along.
Those idiot girls out there were like ripe fruit on a very low-hanging branch. The slightest breeze would be enough to shake them from the tree and into the waiting arms of Leather Boy or someone just like him and their entire lives would be changed forever.
Except it wasn’t going to happen on her watch. With apologies to the good real estate agents of Cumberland County, it was time to prepare for battle.
