Psst…Lady Jane’s Salon WB-Scranton Launches in March

So, I’ve been kind of quiet lately. My husband might disagree with that but if you’ve been reading my blog you’ve probably wondered what I’ve been up to.

[Spanks... reaction gifs.]

No, not that. Really.

Okay, the sentiment is pretty much the same.

I went to New York to read Eternal Ever After at Lady Jane’s Salon earlier this month. I wanted to see what it was all about because we don’t have anything like that around here.

We have Dunder Mifflin, the Office , and that’s about it. We need to connect our local romance authors with readers. I knew on the drive home from New York that we need a Lady Jane’s Salon. We need a romance reading series right here.

Make it happen, then ask for help became my mantra.

But where? How? And with what money?

I didn’t know how it would come together but we’ve been fortunate to find a venue willing to put up with a bunch of wacky women and serve us wine. A dangerous combination, I know.

Make it happen, then ask for help…

So that’s exactly what I did.

I’ve been lucky to have the help of several members from my local RWA chapter. Our very first Lady Jane’s Salon Wilkes-Barre/Scranton will be Thursday, March 6th.

I won’t bore you with the details. Not when you can read about it here. So if you’re in the tri-state area mark your calendars to come wine and read with us. ;)

Eternal Ever After Reading | Lady Jane’s Salon NYC

My husband and I had a blast in New York!

First, I want to thank everyone who braved the cold to stop by Lady Jane’s Salon. Man was it cold! But there’s nothing like a little romance to stay warm. ;) A huge thank you to Leanna, Hope, and Ron for having me.

I just wish that we could have stayed longer. We high-tailed it out of there since we had a two and a half hour drive through the Poconos to get home.

We did have a ton of fun!

Palm Too Dinner with Hubby at Palm Too

We stopped at a little pub before dinner for a beer. Then we followed in the footsteps of Stephen King and ate at Palm Too on Second Avenue. Yum. Oysters, steak, and fries—they were far tastier than the ones you find on the boardwalk. I can easily see why it’s his favorite steakhouse in New York.

I just love the charactertures. Very cool.

From Left to Right – Jennifer Robson, A.C. James, and Kate McMurray

I debuted on the Salon Stage with Brenda Janowitz and Jennifer Robson and Kate McMurray returned to read an excerpt from her latest M/M romance. My husband was kind enough to film my reading for anyone who couldn’t be there.

I apologize in advance for the crappy recording. He’s not a professional videographer by any means and little did I know that if you were seated directly below the stage, you couldn’t see my face.

Whoops.

It’s not that I was trying to hide behind the paper, but a) there were glaringly bright lights so ya’ll could see me and b) I’m blind as a bat without my glasses, c) and even though I used 14 pt font instead of 12, I had a hard time seeing so I held the paper to the side, d) which just happened to be the side of the room where my husband was filming.

Still, you can hear me loud and clear. No one ever accused me of having a little mouth. Except my orthodontist when I was a kid.

Again, thanks for joining me for my debut Eternal Ever After reading and the many other wonderful authors who braved the cold weather. I plan on another visit to Lady Jane’s Salon in 2015.

I may be at Barnes and Noble in Easton, PA this spring when they host their next local author’s night. I’ll announce the date as soon as I have more information.

And don’t forget to sign-up for my online chat on ShinDig next month.

My First Year & a Half as a Wordwench + Writing Plans for 2014/15

Just so you know…

I’ve been reading a lot of Chuck Wendig lately. And alcohol and blogging don’t mix. So most of this is probably drunken lunacy. Or it could be his NaNoWriMo bundle homework and I just found time to watch 21 Grams. I will NEVER get that two hours of my life back. NEVER. Who was the baby daddy? Creepy heart dude who keeps puffing cigarettes or dead hubby? Damn you, Chuck Wendig, damn you. I must recover by watching something with crude comedy relief like fart noises or sex bloopers.

That being said…

Happy New Year’s to my small flock of devoted readers, my neurosis sharing writer friends, and the random alcohol driven blog stumblers who’ve somehow managed to find themselves reading my triumphs, rants, and my plans for 2014 and beyond. Since we’re all friends here and feeling all nostalgic and probably a little numb (don’t worry in all probability it’s just the whiskey), I shall proceed with flagrant disregard to writing conventions and use as many damn words in one sentence as possible because I figure you’re all three sheets to the wind (or getting there) and I can be unconventional, just like one of my favorite authors.

I’m looking at you Joey W. Hill.

I love how you can use sixty-seven words in one sentence and it’s purple prose fictional poetry with hot manservants who misbehave, so she has to go all vampire queen on his ass and do bad things to him and force him to service two other women, to make them climax simultaneously, or else bad things will happen to his manhole. Shit, that was only sixty-one. Crap! So close, yet so far. Oh, well. And for the record, I’m going to carelessly drop commas wherever I see fit because my editor is off celebrating too.

This writing journey began…okay, I won’t go all the way back to the Genesis when on the eighth day I was given a magical crayon and a talking gerbil whispered all of Chuck Wendig’s deep, dark, musty secrets into my soul using a babblefish that it implanted into my ear. We’ve heard that tale reiterated countless times and although it’s most likely true, I’ll just back up about a year and a half for the sake of time. We all have more alcohol to consume, bushes to puke on. Don’t look at me like that, it’s a time honored tradition to imbibe more alcoholic beverage than our stomachs can hold, make a bunch of promises to ourselves that we have no intention of keeping, kiss perfect strangers (with tongue), and then spew the contents of our stomachs into the nearest bush, alleyway, or onto an unsuspecting waitress at Denny’s.

Where was I?

Oh, yeah.

This crazy thing called writing.

It’s not like I woke up one day and decided, golly-gee-wiliker, I think I’ll write a book today. Except that I did. We all did, but it usually starts with imaginary childhood friends, doodles, or other things that made us…special. I’d written a bunch of smaller stuff. Crap poetry, all purple prose and pointy teeth. It just didn’t work for me. My mother used to go through my stuff and she thought it was good. So I knew undoubtedly that it was bad. I wrote short stories. Then this terrible thing happened. I’m a writer—we make stuff up and get paid to lie. So I’ll just make this next part up because it’s almost certainly more interesting than the truth. Oh, but there will be a partial truth in it. You just won’t know which part. I’m a tease. ;)

So as I was saying…a very bad thing happened.

Then I went shopping to numb the pain through retail therapy, but it didn’t work. And I backed into my husband’s truck. Then my mother in-laws brand new Cadillac. She’s Italian. Er, wait, she might just be married to one. Nevertheless, she makes a mean spaghetti meatball. All because my mind was somewhere else—where did I go wrong? Maybe if I hadn’t succumbed that ecstasy infused Philly cheesesteak with its greasy gobs of goodness, pure evil, I swear it.

Then I started reading and remembered all the poems that weren’t really any good and the stories that I used to write. It distracted me and kept me from putting dents in parked vehicles. It had absolutely nothing to do with the whiskey. I joke. I joke. I drink wine. Mostly. And sometimes I drink Sake or Tuaca, but not together. That would be kind of gross, almost like the contents that are churning in your stomach as we speak.

So I started writing this contemporary romance / romantic suspense / it didn’t really know or rather I didn’t know what it was trying to be. But it was complete and utter crap. Delete. It was then that I noticed the majority of the books on my Kindle or the books I’d grown up reading were mostly paranormal romances, erotica, especially the BDSM variety. I had this crazy idea that if I wrote what I loved then I could get through an entire novel.

So began the Hellfire Club manuscript. The what? Well, you know it as Eternal Ever After. It was originally entitled the Hellfire Club and I wrote it in the winter of 2012. I wrote 50K in third person and it was a love triangle. It sucked, but it sucked just a little bit less than the Contemporary-Suspense-Hybrid-Parasite that kept stealing and drinking all my whiskey like an Irish leprechaun prowling Scranton’s pubs during a St. Patty’s Day parade. Delete…Wait…No, don’t delete. Go back. Rewrite. Revise. It was the false start that I needed to kill off a character that I didn’t even like. We’ll call him Logan. Then rewrite the entire 50K in first person and rearrange scenes to an order that could grow the characters and plot into the 90K Gothic Cinderella re-telling that it is today.

I thought I wanted to traditionally publish it and I researched, then queried agents, pitched at conferences, twitter stalked agents…you know…just so that I’d know what kind of coffee they liked and hand deliver it while I had them trapped in an elevator on their way to work. No, that’s not creepy at all. They call them elevator pitches for a reason, right? RIGHT?!?! You do know I’m kidding? Don’t do that. It’s not cool. I was surprisingly good at query letters and pitching. I don’t think I ever had someone who didn’t want to see pages or my full manuscript. There were form letters. Some were honest to God free critiques. Or that’s what I’ll call them anyway. I absorbed the wisdom contained in their rejections like a prison shiv aimed straight for my kidneys. You know…what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, makes you drink more whiskey, that sort of thing.

Then I discovered a shit ton of blogs dedicated to indie publishing. I read every book on my bucket list. I read things in the genre I was writing, outside the genre I was writing, books that were sitting on the agent’s nightstands that I queried. I’m kidding. Maybe. ;) I found the most wonderful critique partner and a host of other writers not just online, but at local writing groups all hopped up on caffeine fueled self-doubt. These were my people. I’d found community. I’d found home. I found that I could measure productivity by how greasy my hair was but, if my soft kitty t-shirt started to smell like sweat and percolate its own coffee it was time for me to take a shit and go shave. Kidding. Sort of. ;) I discovered a kick ass audio guy who produces all my audiobooks. Mike. His wife likes my smut. I hired an editor and a cover designer. Alexis keeps me from being comma deficient. I learned how to format e-books and started teaching others how to do it too. And I found that occasionally people pay me for this skill.

In a year and a half I have a cozy little website, blog, a newsletter, and tons of online places where people can be social with me. Or send me pictures of their cats. I’m a sucker for cat pictures and baby commercials. I wrote a paranormal erotica short story anthology that prequels the series and it’s available in print, e-book, and audio. Oh, and now it’s in German too. I wrote and published a full length novel that’s in print and e-book. Mike’s doing the audio on it as we speak. Well maybe not as we speak…he’s probably celebrating New Year’s with his wife in naughty ways inspired by my writing. And I wrote a paranormal Christmas short story to fill in the gap between the novel and book two in the series, just for fun, because I felt like it.

So what’s next on the agenda?

In February, I’m involved in a charity project with all proceeds to benefit the American Heart Association and the Alzheimer’s Association. It’s in the form of a poetry anthology. Then book two in the Ever After series has some shocks in store that I already know some of you might not be happy about. BUT there is a pot of gold at the end of that rainbow that will be delivered via extra material at the end of book two. Well in the e-book anyway. Release date to be announced. Then book three.

And I’ve got this idea that I already wrote the opening scene on a piece of notebook paper on my nightstand which is currently the coaster for an empty wine glass that I’ll be refilling in about five minutes. It mixes up some Shakespeare with shifters that may or may not be the start of another series. After that I may have to tackle that little somethin’ somethin’ that I’m going to share my plans for in the extras at the end of book two. Oh, I also read the Naked Truth and did some propositioning as part of my big plans for 2014. It sounds way dirtier than it actually is! ;) All the above mentioned writing plans should carry me well into 2015.

At any rate…that’s what a year and a half of writing looks like and I so happy that some of you actually enjoy it enough to take the time to read and review it on Amazon. Happy New Year everyone!

xoxo -A.C.

Book Description:

Fog and Fascination

Alba Spencer thought her past in Romania and the dark magic that haunted it was behind her forever. She is one of the first female barristers now, safe in London. But London has its dark side, too. A man called the Ripper stalks the midnight streets. There are rumors that her hated stepmother has found her again, suggestions that the nightmares of her childhood are returning. And with them appears the cursed Gypsy boy she once loved, grown into a man more seductive and more terrifying than she ever could have dreamed…

Dimitri Grigorescu has become a surgeon, a gentleman—and a vampire. The lusts that drive his body are scarcely under control, and even he does not truly know what he is capable of. To fight evil and confusion, Alba must rely only on her wits—and a desire that overwhelms her doubts…

Excerpt from SNOW WHITE AND THE VAMPIRE

“I’m very grateful for Teddy’s friendship—and for the opportunity to be introduced to the people he’s acquainted with.” The surgeon lowered his tone. “People like you, Miss Spencer.”

His words encouraged the spattering of nervous blotches across Alba’s chest. “You’re too kind,” she murmured. “So you find this city a pleasant enough place to live?”

“Pleasant but for the brutal murderer who lurks in the Whitechapel District.”

“Are you referring to the killer the newspapers are calling ‘Leather Apron’?” she asked.

He evaluated her with interest yet said nothing.

“I understand this monster killed two unfortunates by ripping their abdomens wide open,” she went on, making no attempt to sugarcoat her words since she was speaking with a surgeon.

“Where did you hear that, Miss Spencer?”

“It said so in the penny dreadfuls. Oh, not that I read them frequently…”

Drake raised an eyebrow.

What am I saying? She didn’t normally babble on so, but this man had lit a fire beneath her, though she couldn’t say why.

To her great relief, the doctor didn’t seem to notice her jittering nerves. “Nasty business, preying on those unknowing women,” said. “I can’t imagine a man treating any female that way. After all, women are beautiful creatures to be coddled. Admired. Cherished.”

“That’s a lovely thought.” Alba repressed a girlish sigh. “It’s a shame the killer does not share your school of thought.”

Drake wrapped his hands around his back. “I daresay the police believe this murderer will strike again.”

“I fear that is why fewer people came to your party this evening than Teddy anticipated. The city is gripped with fear.” She paused to take a sip of champagne. “Perhaps we should talk about something more uplifting than murder.”

“Yes.” The surgeon took her glass and deposited it on a servant’s tray. With his hand pressed to the small of her back, he guided her to a quiet corner of the drawing room. As she turned to face him, she could smell hot liquor fumes and the scent of expensive aftershave. Surprisingly, she found that she liked the mixture of aromas.

“Teddy tells me you hail from Romania as well, Miss Spencer. What are the

chances of that?”

“Slim, I daresay.”

“You’ve lost a great deal of your accent, but if I had to guess, you are from Bucharest.”

“I am.” How did he know?

His features darkened. “It appears we were destined to meet. And since we have, I’d be fascinated to know more about you.”

Although Alba was taken aback by his boldness, nerves propelled her to continue their conversation in a blabbering rush. “I came to London when I was fourteen—to live with a family friend who runs the dormitory apartments of the Royal Opera’s corps de ballet. Just this year, I graduated from law school. That’s where Teddy and I met—at King’s College. Recently, I’ve been assisting Teddy’s father, Harold Rollingsworth, in the hopes that—”

“—you will become London’s first female barrister.” Drake completed her thought. Tilting his head to the side, he gazed at her with admiration. “Lovely, intelligent, and a pioneer. You are a rare gem, Miss Spencer.”

The Romanian’s hungry stare closed the small distance between them. Alba’s cheeks burned. We hardly know one another!

Desperate to steer the conversation away from herself, she cleared her

throat. “I have yet to wish you a happy birthday, Dr. Griffin.”

“Thank you.” The guest of honor did a cordial bow. “But ‘Griffin’ is merely my professional name.”

Alba frowned. “What is your real name?”

“Dimitri Grigorescu.”

Alba’s limbs froze and the room started to take on a slow whirl. “That’s curious,” she murmured. “I knew someone by that name in Romania.”

“And I once knew a girl named Alba Zǎpǎda,” Dimitri said as a curtain of desire passed over his face. “You.

His lips thinned into a familiar smile and Alba’s hand flew to her gaping mouth. Curse my poor eyesight! Now that she was this close to him she knew precisely who he was: Dimitri, the handsome Gypsy boy she’d fallen in love with at the tender age of fourteen.

Words escaped her while she gasped for air.

“Life is too short to be without the ones you love,” Dimitri purred. “Don’t you think?”

All at once, memories of the summer Alba spent in the Balkan countryside flashed through her mind:

The first kiss she and Dimitri shared amid a field of white poppies.

Simona, Dimitri’s raven-haired friend.

And the terrifying night the three of them spent in a haunted graveyard.

Her blood raced and the room spun in faster circles.

“I’ve been waiting an eternity to return this to you,” Dimiti whispered as he slipped a dried white poppy into her hand.

“But I thought you were dead,” she said before everything went black.

Look, It’s a Shiny Unicorn Stampeding an Elf!

Okay, so that sounded way more interesting than: This Blog is About to Change, Wowzers! But I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about my writing life and baooooring words like time management. The truth is there’s only one of me and a lot of you. And I want to give you what you want which is more stories, right?

RIGHT.

That means I need to spend my time with my ass in the chair and my fingers on the keyboard writing my little tushy off. Besides, I already booked Alexis to edit book number two and I’m fairly certain she’ll bust out a machete if I don’t deliver. Well maybe not, but I don’t want to piss off the most awesome, kickass editor a girl could have.

Sucking up much? Okay, yeah, too much.

And I’ve noticed that the same books seem to circulate on various blogs to the point that it makes me feel a little bit queasy. It’s not that I won’t be spotlighting other books or blog tours on occasion, but you won’t see as much of that on my blog.

It’s not that I don’t love my fellow authors. I do. These are my people. They share the same neuroses that allow them to spend hours, days, weeks, or even years hanging out with make believe people that will never exist.

But I’m not sure that the best place to reach their readers is my blog or that they’re maximizing their own time management by spotlighting on an author blog versus a blog that’s dedicated to reviewing their particular genre.

I’d rather share the books that I’m currently reading with my readers.

So what will you see on my blog?

Well, you’ll see an occasional whassup to remind you that I’m still alive and kicking—to update you on what I’m working on. You might see some fun stuff or things about my rug rats because they’re just too damn cute for me not to share. I’ll be reviewing books on writing and sharing stuff for writers. And I’ll be reviewing books I’ve read that I think my readers might want to read too.

How often?

I don’t know. Whenever I feel like it…once a week, twice a month, once a month. But I’d suggest you subscribe to the blog so you’ll be the first to know when a new blog post goes up.

So what about the unicorn stampeding an elf?

Oh, yeah. You wanted to see that. Well, okay, if you insist!

Ribbon of Darkness (Fantasy Erotica)

ribbonofdarknessdecadentkanebtRibbon of Darkness

The Trouble with Elves

Book 1

Decadent Kane

Genre: Erotica

Publisher: Breathless Press

ISBN: 978-1-77101-203-4

ASIN:

Cover Artist: Fiona Jayde

Book Description:

Before Ribbon had a chance to get used to the idea of being an elf, she ran into Draven who’s body jingled her bells. Unfortunately, he’s the spy sent to haul her and her family back to the North Pole on Santa’s orders.

Draven North has had one task for the last twenty-four years: find the Winters family and bring them home. He wasn’t expecting their only daughter to deck his halls. No matter how hot and sassy he found his roguess, he had to take her back before the darkness devoured the Pole and Christmas magic along with it. But was it already too late?

Book Trailer: http://youtu.be/u6IX–LJnUc

Short Excerpt:

“Draven! You sly holy Knight. Sneaking up on a helpless Sylvan Elf such as I. You know I’m an emotional creature. Where have you been?” Maple asked the minute Draven materialized in her leaf hut. She was a strong survivalist, living among her clan. Their independence was an attribute to their species. Her golden hair contrasted with her tanned skin and defined feminine muscles. He recalled the last time those thigh muscles wrapped around him, it had been too long.

“My dear, Maple.” Draven bowed in apology for startling her. “Please forgive my intrusion. I’d hoped you’d like to see me as much as I’d like to see you. For my work keeps me busy much of the time, it’s hard to schedule a time to come.”

Maple’s hands pulled Draven upright. “I’ve missed you terribly.” Her light green eyes fluttered their lashes. He adored her bold antics, but knew she’d never be his true mate. Only a Claus Elf could mate for life. She knew that, but pretend was fair play in their coupling.

Draven drew her in tight around him and crushed his lips to hers. Pushing his tongue past her parting lips and lapping at the sweet taste of syrup. She bit his lower lip and pulled back. “Are you happy to see me or is that a candy cane in your pocket?” Her hand cupped his cock through his jeans and squeezed. He narrowed his gaze on her.

“Candy canes have no business here.” He ripped the brown leaf dress from her body causing a gasp to escape her lips. He’d give anything to hear that sound come from Ribbon. Damn his brain. His cock only grew harder at the image of the rogue elf and her black hair sliding over her shoulders.

Book 2

Ivory hates life. She was entombed in magic for hundreds of years, enduring isolation and hopelessness thanks to her mother. When she emerges, she finds herself on the verge of insanity. The world has changed and all she knows is what she’s heard or seen while people thought her to be only a statue.

Only one person remains with her through it all, the gargoyle, Lincoln. Raised for the last years of her life as a human woman by her mother, a dryad, Ivory has come to believe that she is special, unique, and important. More importantly, the entire time that she was a statue, she had believed that Lincoln loved her and was devoted to her.

When he doesn’t declare his love, and seems distant, Ivory shuts down.

If Lincoln can’t help her to see that what makes her special is her heart, not her beauty, she will become the vessel of annihilation for all the races of Earth. If she realizes that love is more than servitude, she will become one of the greatest gifts in the fight against the encroaching evil.

About the Author:

Shannon Phoenix always wrote stories. She watched the characters take on their lives within her mind, and began to write down what they were doing. She would write the stories and then let them go. But a few years ago, she got caught writing those stories. You know… those stories.

To her surprise, the person who found her stories loved her characters as much as Shannon did. She tentatively allowed others to read the stories, as well, and it was from that first foray into the scary world of letting others read her ‘little tales’ that Shannon Phoenix Books was born.

Shannon lives in New Hampshire with her husband, her daughter, and their family cat. Her full time job is parenting, her part time job is as a mother’s helper to a family friend, and her passion is letting the characters in her mind out on paper–or keyboard, as the case may be.

Welcome to Shannon Phoenix’s Books. May you find the magic in your own life.

rebeccaraisinbtAbout the Author:

Rebecca Raisin is a true bibliophile.

This love of books morphed into the desire to write them. She’s been widely published in various short story anthologies, and in fiction magazines, and is now focusing on writing romance. The only downfall about writing about gorgeous men who have brains as well as brawn, is falling in love with them – just as well they’re fictional. Rebecca aims to write characters you can see yourself being friends with. People with big hearts who care about relationships, and most importantly, believe in true love.
