Her Empire Builder Podcast!

Possum blossoms!
Beautiful business coach Tina Tower interviewed me on her wonderful podcast: Her Empire Builder.
I legit adore when I connect with someone on this level! 🚨 #NewBestieAlert 🚨
Listen to how Tina sums up the episode omg…
OMG – Leonie Dawson! Literally one of my favourite podcast interviews EVER! For days and days after I recorded this podcast I was thinking about the words that she said, the way she lives and how she’s a complete unapologetic rule breaker!
Now, I am all for designing your business and life to suit you and like to think I do a pretty darn good job of it, but Leonie takes it a million levels further. She’s built an epic business with a revenue of 7 figures a year and only works 10 hours a week (YES! 10 HOURS!!) and doesn’t use social media anymore. I mean, come on – what?! You’ll hear me say that over and over in our podcast.
I had wanted to chat to Leonie for so long before this interview and now we’ve become real life friends but honestly, I have a major girl crush. Leonie has opened my mind up to all of the ways we can think differently, reexamine what’s possible for us and truly live life in congruence with our values.
How sweet is this?! I think it’s true love.
In this episode, you will learn:Minimising cost and maximising revenue. The importance of self-belief.How to improve work-life balance.Ready to listen?Click HERE and let the sweet sounds of our voices keep you company for awhile…
Big love!

Devoted Way Podcast!

Possum blossoms!
Recently I had the opportunity to sit down with Sora from the Devoted Way podcast and we had a blast!
Let’s cross over to Sora for all the yummy things you’ll listen to in this ep:
Leonie’s 21 day challenges for herself and how she will try just about anything for 21 days! (no social media, no smart phone, comic creation, meditation)How Leonie is no longer on social media at all and how that has drastically shifted things in her lifeWealth and well being, becoming financially literate and investing in ethically managed fundsWriting to her newsletter every day, there seems to be so much more engagement in that space then there was on social mediaPlus! Rather than trickling the first season weekly or bi-monthly, I found myself leaning into the idea of revealing the entire season in one go. For you see, I love having the option of listening or viewing a show at my own pleasure and leisure. Why not create the same experience I know I love on Netflix by creating a podflix?
Introducing a celestial journey called S.T.A.R. – a magical gamified podflix. STAR stands for Stellar Transformational Act of Reverence and this 13-day challenge was created in honor of your wisdom and presence.
Why thank you, Sora! Now, back to Leonie A.K.A me… (I feel like a news anchor, ha!)
Ready to listen?Click HERE and settle in with a cuppa!
Happy listening, darlings!

Online Business Playground Summit

Loves,
Consider this your very, VERY special invite to the best party of the year…
Earlier this year, I connected with my new friend Lizzy Goddard and to my utter delight she invited me to take part in her summit!

look at Lizzy’s giraffe onesie, is it not literally the best thing you’ve ever seen?
Here’s the delicious scoop:This summit exists to help business owners like you discover brilliance. Nearly all of us have tried everyone else’s ideas, only for it not to feel aligned or not work the way we thought it would.
This summit is going to help affirm that it’s not you. It’s them.
Bottomline, the best, most impactful + profitable biz decisions come from you.
Obviously we can get inspiration from others. But it’s about taking that inspiration and turning into something that fits in with your business and values. In fact, seeing other people doing their thing just might be the thing you need to connect with your creative self and download your best biz idea yet.
And that, my darlings, is where lovely Lizzy and her Online Business Playground Summit come in.
The summit includes a group of 30 varied and diverse speakers (including moi!!) to talk about the moments they were brave enough to take action on some out-there ideas:💡 Ideas that didn’t play by the rules.
💡 Ideas someone might have told us were terrible.
💡 Ideas that seemed more fun than strategic, but twe said yes to trying out anyway.
But most of all, ideas that taught us they can do business in a way that allows us to:🦄 feel truly authentic within the business
😍 genuinely look forward to working
🙌🏽 trust our own ideas and intuition
All for FREE!!
Count.me.in.
So, what will I be talking about at the summit? My presentation is all about how I run A Million Dollar Business Without Social Media!
I would be fucking THRILLED if you signed up and came to cheer me on. (And maybe even get inspired enough to break up with social media!)
The event is happening September 20-23rd, and my presentation will be available for 24 hours from the 21st of September 12am PT!
I can’t wait to see you there!
Love always,

P.S. Registration for the Online Business Playground Summit is OPEN! You can get your free ticket, or upgrade to a Play Pass for extended access, wicked sweet illustrations, and over $3,400 in bonuses from now for a GIANT discount! This won’t be available forever, so get it while it’s hot.

Notes from Martha Stewart’s “Organizing”

Bubs,
I know I’ve been fucking quiet lately. I feel like a caterpillar turned mush in a chrysalis. I have nothing really to share, except this kind of bored malaise I’ve been in for a couple of months now. I don’t know what I’ll do next, I just know I’m itchy and wanting something new.
Or maybe I just need to get some LIFE into me, ya know? I haven’t hung out with friends in months. I probably need a new hobby. Today is the start of school holidays. I think I’ll just soak myself in life: do art with the kids. Go on mini adventures. Play board games. Cook and bake. Maybe even do some DIY or decluttering or house organising. You know, go REALLY WILD. Ha!
In the meantime, what I can do is share notes with you from books I’m reading. I’ve already shared my notes from Order From Chaos (a book on ADHD organisation) and Atomic Habits.
I’ve just finished reading Martha Stewart’s “Organizing: The Manual For Bringing Order To Your Life, Home & Routines“. It’s the second Martha book I’ve read – I really loved “The Martha Rules” that was published years ago. It’s her book about business & marketing, and I found it useful & interesting.
Anyways, I binge bought a stack of books on organising a wee while ago. Martha’s was the first I finished. I would probably give it a 3/5 stars. Nothing ground-breaking. Useful for me to have a peruse however and see what essential “How To Adult” wisdom I’ve inadvertently missed. Ha!
At one point in the book, Martha lays out her calendar of daily organising tasks she does over the full year including “February 28: Organize your linen closet” and “February 3: Sharpen and oil your garden tools.” This completely blew my brain out – I was equal wildly parts impressed and also thought it was bordering on psychotic. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
At one point I complained to a friend that Martha was the Antithesis of ADHD. And she responded: “That… or she is ADHD and this is peak overcompensating her poor executive functioning with complex systems.” HA! OMG WOT IF!
Anyways, Martha is Queen Virgo in all of VirgoLand (even though she’s actually not a Virgo), and I am an home-organising peasant in comparison.
Here’s my notes…
Organisational MindsetDon’t expect sudden shifts in your everyday routine; recognise that any long lasting change will take persistence.Tackle one room or routine at a time. Start with high-traffic areas like the kitchen & bathroom as this will give you the greatest sense of accomplishment & keep you motivated to go through the remaining rooms. If a whole room is still too daunting, pinpoint one component (kitchen cabinets & drawers, for example) at a time.Doing a bit everyday is the best way to get everything done without getting overwhelmed.A home that’s free of clutter conveys a sense of calm & encourages productivity.Consider the needs of each person in the house.Consider your biggest organisational challenge. Do you have to hunt down your keys every day? Maybe your kids drop everything right where they took it off? Designated spaces & smart furnishing choices can address your trouble areas. Be realistic & be prepared to embrace change.Practical TipsKeep cleaning supplies where they are used.Totes can be used as storage.Wall hooks keep stuff off the floor throughout the home, including the garage & basement.Use trays to group items for a cohesive effect, such as on a coffee table, dresser or nightstand, and on kitchen counters, bathroom surfaces & entry consoles.Baskets & bins are helpful for rounding up different items. Keep like with like. Label. It’s always better to fold laundry right out of the dryer or off the line, rather than them being forgotten. If you work remotely or have a business at home, you’ll require plenty of storage, and a system for keeping on top of the daily flow of digital & physical paperwork. Before you can really clean (whether a quick weekly clean up or deep seasonal clean), you must declutter.Clean tile grout by applying a baking soda paste. Spray with vinegar. Let sit and fizz, scrub with a soft toothbrush then rise with a damp rag.Lifespans of FixturesWasher, dishwasher, fridges, aircon, ranger: last 10-15 years.Central AC units: last 15-20 years.Water heaters: last 10-15 yearsConcrete & asphalt driveways: last 30 yearsWood decks: last 30 years, depending on weather conditions.KidsEnforce the “one in, one out” rule. Before your kid gets to bring home a new toy, they need to decide on one they wish to donate.Kids tend to accumulate a lot of tchotchkes. At the beginning of each year, give each child a memory box to put favourite keepsakes in.Delegate tasks to everyone in the home to help them get done faster. Kids can look after their own rooms and play areas.KitchenAdd hooks & racks inside kitchen cabinets & doors.Consider Lazy Susans in fridge or pantry. In an efficient kitchen, it’s not just mealtimes that run more smoothly – it’s your morning-to-night routine.Keep frequently used items in the open & where they are used. Group similar tools together. Employ storage and drawer dividers to customise spaces.Empty one drawer or cabinet at a time, sorting like items into piles and getting rid of unneeded duplicates, broken or damaged items or anything that hasn’t been used in a while.Think about how – and how often – you use each item. Store them where you use them the most.Stowing dishwashing supplies in a stylish receptacle keeps the sink area tidy.Put infrequently used items on upper shelves (but not if heavy or unwieldy). You can add more shelves to existing cabinets. Use risers or under shelf units to triple or double vertical storage.Invest in glass food storage containers that nest together. Store lids together.Redefine what a junk drawer is. Keep essential household items in a drawer together, organised with inserts. Weed out what is truly junk.FridgeThe coldest spots are usually the bottom drawer and the back of the top or bottom shelf, closest to the vent. The door will be the least cold.Avoid overfilling the fridge as it interferes with cold air circulation.Tuck a baking soda box inside to combat odours. Replace every month.FoodCarve out time each week to plan meals & pack lunches and snacks daily to avoid poor last-minute decisions.Eat a wide variety of foods to get the full range of essential nutrients. Prioritise seasonal produce and plant-based proteins. For breakfast, make a pudding of chia seeds soaked in unsweetened coconut milk, maple syrup & vanilla extract. Refrigerate overnight. Layer with fruit & yogurt & a green smoothie. For quick dinners, make pasta with vegetables & herbs from your own garden.Use your own herbs to make pesto. Make basil, parmesan, pine nut or walnut. Or try parsley, almonds and orange zest; mint, pistachios and lemon zest; or cilantro, cashews and red chiles.Build a sandwich board for lunch or gatherings.Grow varieties of pumpkins, then roast to enjoy on their own, stuffed with grains or vegetables, or added to soups, salads and pasta dishes.PlantsYellow foliage can signal too much wateringWhen transplanting trees, dig a hole that’s 3-4 times the diameter of the tree’s container, sloping the sides like a shallow bowlAdd potted plants to bathrooms and bedrooms to purify the air.BedroomStrive for serenity. With your head propped on pillow, what can you see from your bed? Is there anything that interferes with your peace & enjoyment? Picture what you’d like to see from this perspective.Clutter has no business in the bedroom. Create a sense of calm.A bedroom’s calm is all too easily breached by tossed-aside clothes & teetering piles of books. (LOLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ ALL THE PILES OF BOOKS)Martha’s Annual Organising Calendar(Well… the ones I want to institute. I’m not doing all 365!)
January: schedule health & wellness appointments for entire yearJanuary: plan mid-year holidaysJanuary: Refresh First Aid KitSeasonal: Buy theatre & entertainment tickets for next seasonFebruary: Deep clean towels by laundering in washing machine on hottest setting with a cup of white vinegar.March & November: Change batteries in smoke alarms.December: Go through schoolwork, artwork and tchotchkes – decide on what to keep and recycle the restActionables: my list of things to do.Organise kitchen drawers with inserts.Buy tubs for buds & cotton balls.Plants for bathrooms & bedroom.Create a cupboard or area for outdoor and sports gear.Add annual tasks to calendar as recurring items.Stowing dishwashing supplies in a stylish receptacle.Add potted plants to bathrooms and bedrooms to purify the air.Righto, this was a bit fun!
Thanks for sharing the journey with me!
Big hugs & love,

Brave New Girl: A New Interview for Your Ears!

Baberinos!
I have a delightful new interview to share with you!
A little while back, I sat down with Lou Hamilton; artist extraordinaire and creator of the Brave New Girl podcast to chat the shit about all things business and neurodiversity.
Lou describes the episode best:
This week’s guest is Leonie Dawson, an artist, best-selling author & award-winning entrepreneur, who has generated over $11 million in revenue while only working 10 hours a week. Her podcast Leonie Dawson will Not be Categorized flies in the face of her adulthood diagnosis of ADHD & autism, which in fact she believes gives her magic powers.
Leonie talks about donating a chunk of her wealth to climate crisis charities, why she’s glad she didn’t get diagnosed until adulthood, how she’s built a business on her terms, why being neuro-diverse is an absolute gift from the gods, and why she decided that 3 hours at 14 years of age was quite enough work to put into becoming a woman.
AND! Lou also did a drawing while we recorded. How coooool is that!
Click HERE and have all the goodness in your ears, pronto!
Enjoy my loves!

Diary: Vaxxed!

Dearests,
Momentous day here.
I got my first COVID-19 vaccine (I got Pfizer).
I know other countries have gotten their vaccines much faster – rollout here in Australia has been much, much slower for various reasons. We’ve mostly managed to have very little COVID cases and deaths in Australia comparatively due to strict quarantining and lockdown measures. And now we’re getting more access to vaccines, just as one state in Australia is struggling to contain the Delta variant.
I didn’t qualify for a Pfizer vaccine as an under 40 year old until about 6 weeks ago. I booked online, and then had about a 5 week wait until my appointment. We drove about an hour to get to the vaccination centre. After I got the vaccine, they gave up Chuppa Chupp lollipops and bottles of water while we sat and waited.
(By contrast, my husband decided to get the Astra Zeneca vaccine and it was a much faster process – he could get it earlier, and just go to a quiet local chemist to get it.)
I actually got teary while we waited: seeing how many people were getting vaccinated, how lucky we are that this is free, how kind all the staff were, and what a miracle that science is. You mean this wee needle can help prevent so many untold illnesses and suffering? What a straight up fucking blessing! What a time to be alive!
Our ancestors sacrificed so much more for the safety and good of their families and communities. This is such a tiny, tiny sacrifice to make that no only helps me but everyone else.
I also felt so oddly patriotic, and proud, and wildly grateful.
We had our youngest daughter with us for it, and she got to watch me get vaccinated, and we talked about what it was for, what it means, and what a historic day it was. She’s lived through a historical event with this pandemic, and she also gets to witness the vaccine that will help bring an end to this event too.
Also because I’m obnoxious adorable, I kept making this joke from The Office all day long:
My husband said after his vaccine he had two thoughts:
He can’t believe there’s been so much talk, debate, bullshit, freak outs and conspiracy theories over such a small needle with life-saving properties. And that it was an easier shot to get than other vaccines. He says Reiki feels more invasive than that vaccine. Ha!He felt less anxious about COVID. He felt like a superhero with super immune properties. Not in a way that would make him engage in risky behaviour – but so he didn’t have to worry so much about what would happen to him if he did catch it.Now I’ve had my first vaccine, I understand what he means. All of a sudden, my worry levels are down. Of course, we still need to be protective over our kids who are still too young to be vaccinated yet, plus other members of our families and communities who are immune-suppressed. But the relief is intense.
As most of you already know, I had what was most likely Swine Flu in 2016 – it was six hellish months of recurrent fevers and illness. We had to replace our bed afterwards – it was stained yellow from the fever sweats. My husband said at the time: “I’ve never seen someone so sick before.” I had great piles of blood tests, but they didn’t test for Swine Flu. It was only after I’d finally recovered that a new doctor reviewed my files and told me it was almost certainly Swine Flu, and I should have been hospitalised due to my blood count levels. So it’s always been in the back of the mind: I’ve already lost 6 months of my life due to a similar virus, and COVID-19 is far more deadly and with greater long-term damage than Swine.
Getting a needle is such an easy choice than having to go through something like that again – or giving that hellish experience to someone else.
Anyways, I just feel so bloody grateful. Thank you scientists. Thank you frontline healthcare workers. Thank you, one and all.

To top off our AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE OI OI OI day we visited the Matilda mascot that was originally used in the 1982 Commonwealth Games.
So thrilled all round! What a day!
Big love to you all,

P.S. This should be faaaaairly obvious by now, but just incase you missed it: if you don’t believe in vaccines or science, and instead prefer to “do your research” by listening to unqualified conspiracy theorists who are re-hashing old Nazi rhetoric, you’re in the wrong place. No need to email in, you’ll just get blocked. Just unsubscribe. I dearly hope you stay safe and well, and that you and your loved ones don’t suffer loss or illness because of those decisions. With much love, Leonie.

Business Success Series: #4: How To Grow A Mailing List

Heyo darlinghearts!
So you now know WHO your people are, WHERE they are hanging out and how you can start reaching out to them and how blogging can help you market your biz!
Next step? You want them on your mailing list, so you can stay in contact with them and invite them to dive deeper into working with you/purchasing from you when the time is right.
Ready for the podcast companion episode?Easyyyy babes! Just click play above, or subscribe via Apple Podcasts, Spotify, PocketCast (or wherever else you listen to podcasts!)
Let me drive this home for you:You want people on your mailing list. You want people on your mailing list. You want people on your mailing list. You want people on your mailing list more than you want them just reading your website or blog.
You want them on your mailing list more than you want them pressing LIKE on your Facebook page.

Why? There’s a heap of reasons. Lemme tell you why, just so I can really drum it into your head and heart WHY you want people on your mailing list.
Here’s The Big Reason: Because That’s Where People Buy From The MostYour conversion rate for sales is SOOOOO much bigger than any other communication platform. One report showed people on mailing lists are 40x more likely to buy than social media followers!
That’s where people will be when they want to buy from you. That’s where people will stay in touch with you the most. It’s a great privilege and an honour for someone to respect you and your business enough to keep inviting you into their inbox. A bigger mailing list = a bigger business for you. Absolutely.
Having a large social media following just doesn’t have the same ring. There’s plenty of pages out there with 100 000+ likes on them. They simply will NOT be selling as much as a person with a 100 000+ mailing list.
A Mailing List Is An Important Business AssetAnd it’s a big deal for your business – a mailing list becomes one of your business’ assets. For example, when I’ve applied for mortgages, one of the things my accountant highlights for my bank to approve me is that my company has a large mailing list. It’s a real asset.
If you decide to sell your business at any time, your mailing list will be one of the assets that increase the selling price of your business, because it’s a communication platform with your existing and potential customers.
A Mailing List Gives You Credibility + Pull PowerTrust me, as soon as you hit over 5000 people on your mailing list, people start treating you differently. They want to joint venture with you. They want to have you be an affiliate for them (or be an affiliate for you). They want to interview you.
They start seeing you as your own media brand. You have a circulation that exceeds newspapers in small towns. And the more you keep growing that list, the more opportunities will arise for you and your business with even more powerful business allies.
You OWN Your Mailing List. You Don’t OWN Your Social Media FollowingsWhat’s more, social media is ephemeral. You don’t “own” your likes. With your mailing list, you get to keep them forever – even if you decide to move mailing list companies.
With social media followings, you are totally reliant on that platform:
continuing to succeed and grow (What if you had a huge following on MySpace? What is that worth now?)not deciding to charge you access to your followers (hello Facebook, I be looking at you!)not changing the algorithms and rules on a daily basis on how you can interact or advertise with your followers. So to go pro and double your biz? You MUST make your priority to get people on your mailing list. GET THEM ON YOUR LIST. GET THEM ON YOUR LIST. GET THEM ON YOUR LIST. Then sell to them off it!
I’ve made a handy dandy checklist for you to use as you set up + grow your mailing list!Pop your details in the form below and download this super helpful checklist! You’ll never forget a thing when working on your mailing list!

(function(d,u,ac){var s=d.createElement('script');s.type='text/javascript';s.src='https://a.omappapi.com/app/js/api.min...
How To Get More People To Sign Up To Your Mailing List From Your Website Or BlogHere’s some proven ways to get more mailing list signups from your website or blog:
If you are in the service business, or you are the main part of your business, have a great picture of YOU up top. Why? Because when someone lands on a website, they immediately look around to see if they could like and trust that person or business. Humans get this trust from being able to look into another person’s eyes. And in lieu of you being able to fly around and stare at every potential new customer in the face, we need a photo of you looking at the camera instead. People will make snap judgments. This is a good thing!Consider a header videoYou can also make your header image into a non-auto-play video to build even more of a story of who you are and what you do and offer.Easy sign up box
Seriously people. If you say to me “click here to go to this other page to sign up,” I’m not going to. What’s more 95% of people are lazy like me. Don’t make me have to hunt down your sign up box. You should have it EVERYWHERE on your website!Places to consider having a sign-up box:In your website headerAt the end of every blog post (I use Optin Monster for mine)At the bottom of every page on your websiteAs an entry or exit pop-up on your website (I use Optin Monster for that too)
Have a free e-book, special report, teleseminar or audio that directly helps your target market (we’ll talk more about this in a future BSS instalment).
Sell your free stuff as being VALUABLE (because it is)! Give your target market evidence of why it is worth their time to sign up and give their attention to it!
Show the VALUE in your gift by:Saying how much it is worth (in dollar value)Providing an image (i.e. CD or book) of what they receive (even if it is a digital copy)Arrows arrows arrows!Whatever you want people to do, point the direction! Give ‘em arrows, arrows, arrows! Circle the Submit button! You have to imagine this: when people arrive at your website, they have to IMMEDIATELY be able to see who you are and what you are offering. They could go in a thousand different directions. You HAVE to make it SUPER OBVIOUS what they should be doing. Don’t give them a million different options. Direct them with love where you want them to go. Which is onto your mailing list.SELL your free offering + mailing list!
It’s not good enough to just say “Sign up to get a free ebook!” Every man and his dog and every woman and her unicorn are offering free ebooks. You need to say WHY yours is so awesome, and what huge benefits and results they will get out of it! Make sure your reasons to sign up to your mailing list are copywritten well with a fantastic title that your peeps WANT – solve a problem for them! (If you need to improve your copywriting skills, make sure you take my Sales Star Masterclass!)Sidebar video
Consider having a video in your sidebar saying hello, introducing yourself, talking about how you help people/what you offer, and to sign up to your mailing list to get your special offer that will help them. Make it as short as possible (2-3 minutes max!)Whatever you do… start today
Building a mailing list is the most important thing you can do for your business!
And if you need to learn more marketing and sales skills, this is the program for you! And if you want to learn more about marketing without social media, head here!

Notes on Atomic Habits

Pookybears,
Yesterday I shared with you my notes from reading Order From Chaos.
I found it helpful writing out those notes, so I thought I’d try again with another book!
I just finished Atomic Habits by James Clear today. It’s a super sonic bestseller – over 3 million copies now sold. I’ve seen it around quite a bit the last few years, and decided to grab a copy a few months ago because I was wanting to improve my habits.
I think it was a great book. HOWEVER… I am unsure yet whether I:
a) can remember anything from it (thus me reviewing my notes here)
b) will actually do anything differently from it.
I’ll let you know over time if it does make a big difference in habit formation & keeping!
In the meantime, here’s my notes!Changes that seem small and unimportant at first will compound into remarkable results if you’re willing to stick with them for years. With better habits, anything is possible.British Cycling made massive gains in improvement by aggregating marginal gains… possibly. It may also be due to the fact they were doping.Too often, we convince ourselves that massive success requires massive action. Improving by 1% can compound over time. What starts as a small win can accumulate into something much more. Habits are the compound interest of self improvement. The effects of habits multiply as you repeat them.Your net worth is a lagging measure of your financial habits.Goals are about the results you want to achieve. Systems are about the processes that lead to those results. Focus on systems.Becoming the best version of yourself requires you to continuously edit your beliefs, and to upgrade and expand your identity.Ask yourself “Who is the type of person that could get the outcome that I want?” i.e. “What would a healthy person do?”You don’t need to be perfect. Your goal is simply to win the majority of the time with good habits over bad.Your identity emerges out of your habits. Every action is a vote for the type of person you wish to become.Without good health habits, you will always be short on energy.A habit is a behaviour that has been repeated enough times to become automatic. The ultimate purpose of habits is to solve the problems of life as little energy and effort as possible. The Four Laws of Behaviour Change are a simple set of rules we can use to build better habits1) make it obvious
2) make it attractive
3) make it easy
4) make it satisfyingHabit stack by pairing a new habit with an existing habit.Make the cues of good habits obvious in your environment.People with high self-control tend to spend less time in tempting situations. It’s easier to avoid temptation than resist it.One of the most practical ways to eliminate a bad habit is to reduce exposure to the cue that causes it.Self-control is a short-term strategy, not a long-term one.Make the cues of bad habits invisible.Temptation Bundling: bundle a necessary habit with something enjoyable. For example, listen to podcasts or voicemails only while walking.Habits are attractive when we associate them with positive feelings, and unattractive when we associate them with negative feelings.Quantity of creating breeds quality. The most effective form of learning is practice, not planning.Make the good habit the path of least resistance.
Reduce friction and obstacles between you and good habits.
Increase friction and obstacles between you and bad habits.Create an environment when doing the right thing is as easy as possible. When you start a new habit, it should take less than 2 minutes to do.The point is to master the habit of turning up.Victor Hugo had a book to write… so he locked up all his clothes and only left himself with a shawl. That way he couldn’t leave the house and needed to just write the book instead. Ha!The ultimate way to lock in future behaviour is to automate your habits. You are more likely to repeat a behaviour when it is satisfying. What is rewarded is repeated. What is punished is avoided. The costs of good habits is in the present.
The costs of bad habits are in the future.Make things satisfying using habit trackers, visual reminders of progress, money thermometers etc.If you miss a day try to get back on track as soon as possible. When you create an overarching goal, break it down into shorter priorities or phases and then daily habits to achieve that.Give yourself unpalatable consequences if you don’t follow through on something.Have an accountability partner or be public about your goals. The Big 5 Personality Traits
1) Openness to new experiences
2) Conscientiousness
3) Extroversion
4) Agreeableness
5) NeuroticismThe Big 5 Personality Traits have biological underpinnings. For example: neuroticism = hypersensitivity of the amygdala.Exploit/explore tradeoff
If winning or attaining the goal you want = keep exploiting current methods. Exploit exploit exploit.
If losing or not attaining the goal you want = explore new methods. Explore explore explore.A good player works hard to win the game everyone else is playing. A great player creates a new game that favours their strengths and avoids their weaknesses. Play a game that favours your strengths.Goldilocks Rule: set goals that are a stretch, but not unattainable. (i.e. not too hot, not too cold).Have a system for reflection and review to have continuous improvements over a career.Review
a) what went well
b) what didn’t go well
c) what did I learn.Hope this was useful in some way!
I read 90% of books on Kindle, and refer to my saved highlights & notes that are automatically added to my Goodreads account. Sometimes when I really want to study a book however, I get it in paperback.
I read this book in paperback format, and studied it like a textbook with highlighters & pens.
Happy learning my loves!
Big hugs,

Notes from “Order From Chaos”

Pooky bears,
Just finished reading “Order From Chaos: The Everyday Grind of Staying Organised with Adult ADHD” by Jaclyn Paul from The ADHD Homestead.
It was bloody brilliant – it will definitely get added to my Best Books of the Year list and I’ve already added it to my favourite Autism resources.
It’s basically an ADHD guide to doing David Allen’s Getting Things Done system (which I already use and love). She combines digital project management with a bullet journal plus a working knowledge of Gretchen Rubin’s Four Tendencies… which is exactly what I use. So… basically, totally up my fucking alley! Ha!
I was diagnosed with ADHD along with Autism last year when I was assessed. It originally was a surprise to me – I knew I was Autistic already, but I hadn’t considered ADHD. Since then I’ve learned so much about ADHD and it’s been like discovering an extra piece of the puzzle. I’ve also learned that having a combination of ASD & ADHD is more common that not – up to 75% of neurodiverse peeps have both. In fact, there’s increasing research that shows ASD & ADHD may be the same brain – it just presents differently. That possibility blows me away!
Anyways, here’s my notes on this book for all my neurodiverse niblings… hope it is useful!
“Order From Chaos” notes:Extreme disorganization can make ADHD symptoms worse. If you’re currently unhappy with the level of disorganization in your life, take some time to figure out why that is — and what you’re looking for.ADHD abhors tedium without purpose.“I’ve met people who do this — go to the gym and work out — so I can attest that they exist. I don’t understand them, nor will I ever be one of them.” – MOODWhen you try to get organized, remember it isn’t all about skill and habit development. We must also get real about what’s advisable, or even possible. Even the most organized person can take on too much. For someone with ADHD, that threshold may be lower than you think.Doing things because we think we should, rather than because we must or because they serve our Why, leaves little time and energy for our true priorities. Be especially ruthless with activities that require a lot of your ADHD. Most people with ADHD struggle with tedious tasks like filing, paying bills, and reading and answering emails.Who we are informs how we ought to solve problems and organize our lives.Every time you find yourself feeling stretched thin, break out your to-do list. Make a list of your roles in your office, family, and community. Identify a few you can let go, and find a responsible way to do so.Piles form because we lack a system for dealing with incoming items, or because the home or landing pad for those items is too inconvenient. Many ADHD households struggle with clutter. Don’t ask your brain to look at an entire room full of clutter and form a solution. Break it down, sort it, and contain it. Know your brain, accept your reality, and create a solution that offers the path of least resistance.Use your Someday Maybe list for everything you want but can’t do or buy right now.Kinkeeping refers to the work that must be done to keep extended families connected. This work often falls on one person, and that person is usually female.“Behind every five-star rating on my Goodreads list lurks several hours of missed sleep.” – HA. SAME!Simplicity — the art of maximizing the amount of work not done — is essential. Maximize the amount of work not done. Make sure your life/business/system requires as little work as possible.Buying a lot of pretty containers and organizing your mess into them will not create lasting change. You need to control the incoming flow of stuff.(When your kid is terrified by a project:) Are they big, nebulous things where she might not know where to start? When confronted with a big mess, many people simply freeze. Give a clear, easy starting point, along with a clear process, and you may be surprised at what she’s willing (and able) to do!People with ADHD struggle with any decision that requires us to consider several factors. This is probably due to working memory deficiencies, a reduced ability to prioritize individual issues, and other fun facets of our ADHD brains. If you have ADHD, and especially if you have a poor memory, your month-ago self can sometimes feel like another person. Some of us need a small dose of redundancy for certain things to sink in. And what are those things? They’re my obligations for this week. Each week, I copy all my appointments, reminders, and time-sensitive tasks from Google Calendar to my Daily Log.I’ve found that handwriting my agenda at the start of each week significantly increases my awareness of what I need to do and when. For those with ADHD especially, the big picture must be tangible. Otherwise we cannot grasp what has been done or what we still need to do. Something will slip through the cracks.Don’t judge yourself for failures; write the problem down and troubleshoot solutions instead.Because we’re drawn to novelty, because we crave stimulation, and because we lack a firm grasp on time itself, people with ADHD have trouble saying no. We aren’t very good at assessing our lives and saying, “this is enough,” or even more difficult, “this is too much.”If we live every day feeling maxed out, we won’t have energy to deal with unexpected challenges. Many people with ADHD resign ourselves to a home full of half-finished projects. We gravitate toward anything that provides quick, repeated bursts of dopamine (Facebook, Doritos, making inappropriate jokes). At the end of the day, your home and possessions are yet another commitment.Tips when doing a GTD Weekly Review with ADHD:Make sure your system is sustainable for the long term by keeping your Weekly Review short and manageable, getting your ADHD symptoms under control, and giving yourself a workspace that meets your needs. The second-biggest challenge to reaching Inbox Zero with ADHD is resisting the temptation to do everything, completely, as it comes up. Maybe you’re afraid you’ll forget to take care of it unless you do it now. This is understandable, given your past. But we’re setting up a new system here, and you must learn to trust it.A person with ADHD can easily be derailed by the item we pull out (of our inbox to process) and exclaim, “Oooh! I forgot about this! Let me take care of it right now…” An hour goes by and we still have a full inbox. Even if we aren’t victims of the forgetting fear mentioned above, we can get roped into something that sounds more fun, like planning a ski vacation, rather than deciding what to do with that returned holiday card. If you have ADHD, you know you can always, always find something more appealing than that thing you don’t want to do. The temptation to work on a fun item from your inbox at the expense of everything else in there is strong. Resist it.Quit drinking from the pipe. You can knock out very short tasks while emptying your inbox, but avoid stopping for anything over two minutes. Otherwise, your inbox will never be empty. I know it’s hard to do when you have ADHD, but you need to try your best every time.Resist the temptation to skip around and work on more fun or interesting projects first.Never put something back into your inbox once you take it out.Highly recommending reading this book if these notes are dinging a bell for you!
Big love,
