GINGER BERRY PROTEIN SMOOTHIE
First off: shout out to this album. It's pay-what-you-can, all electronic music made by South American women and it's fire. Fave track: Blue Dress.
I've been focusing on activities that make me feel good and make me a better human, they keep me distracted from my negative thinking patterns (mental illness struggles woo) and force me to put my energy into stuff that is positive for my body, mind and/or spirit. One of those activities is going to the gym regularly. I love growing my muscles and feeling strong. I love lifting weights and watching my body wooork. I love the improvements in my physical abilities I notice over time (not trying to be ableist here though!) And I love giving my body what it needs once I'm done a workout. Which is a colourful variety of whole foods, with an emphasis on protein. I like mostly fruit smoothies, sometimes with veggies or greens blended it, and directly post-workout: with protein powder added.
GINGER BERRY PROTEIN SMOOTHIE
1 cup pineapple
1 cup frozen berries
1 cup almond milk
1/2 teaspoon ginger powder
1 scoop of your fave vegan protein powder (or a couple tablespoons of nuts or seeds)
Blend until smooth and enjoy!

CHAI CHEESECAKES with CHOCOLATE DRIZZLE
Ey, babes! This recipe is bomb. It's creamy, decadent, sweet and full of wholesome stuff your body wants (like nuts, chocolate and chai spices). I know I flip flop a lot on what to call vegan cheesecakes: I've gone through phases of not caring, to preferring to call them cheeZecakes, to labelling them as cream cakes, and now I've gone full circle and am back to calling them cheesecakes because while no, they don't contain any DAIRY cheese, they ARE vegan cheesecake! I've stopped calling plant-based meats and cheeses "fake", and now I simply refer to them as vegan meats and cheeses, because that is what they are. This recipe is everything you want a cheesecake to be, it's just not made with dairy. I'm not a baby cow. I'm a grown ass human being who has access to non-dairy milk, nuts, rice, oats, fruits, veggies and more - so I make the choice to eat vegan foods because it's less damaging to the planet, and more compassionate to our animal pals. Going vegan isn't gonna save the world, but it's a small step towards a more conscientious lifestyle for those of us who can make it. Please eat as many of these cheesecakes as you want.
CHAI CHEESECAKES with CHOCOLATE DRIZZLE
Makes three mini cheesecakes
Cheesecakes:
1 cup cashews
1/4 cup dates
3 tablespoons maple syrup
3-4 tablespoons water or lemon juice
3 tablespoons coconut oil
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon powder
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg powder
1/8 teaspoon ginger powder
1/8 teaspoon vanilla powder
3-5 seeds from a cardamom pod
Crust:
1/6 cup coconut flour
1/6 cup almond flour
1 tablespoon maple syrup
1 tablespoon melted coconut oil
1 tablespoon cacao powder
2 tablespoons water
Pinch Himalayan salt
Chocolate drizzle:
1 tablespoon melted cacao butter
1 tablespoon cacao powder
2 tablespoons maple syrup
To make the cheesecake: blend all ingredients together until smooth, thick and delicious. Set aside.
To make the crust: stir together all the ingredients until you get a semi-crumbly mixture that holds its shape when pressed between two fingers. If it's still too crumbly, add some more water. Press the crust into lined cupcake molds and then fill with the cheesecake mix. Leave in the freezer or fridge overnight. Gently remove the cheesecakes from the molds.
To make the drizzle: stir together the ingredients - ya just made chocolate sauce! Drizzle over your cheesecakes and enjoooy.

BLUEBERRY NICE CREAM with MAPLE OATS + PB
When Jack first broke up with me (eternally traumatized sad face) it was a serious bummer every time I made a recipe because when we were together I would always share them with him, plus he was my #1 hand model (and you know, also the love of my FREAKING life). But I am getting the hang of... I dunno... eating more? And making single serving recipes. AND sharing with other people. BECAUSE THERE ARE OTHER PEOPLE. More than anything, being single again for the first time in years - and since I was a teenager - is making me so grateful for my friends (old and new alike), supporters (you!) and mom. I thought I needed my entire support system in one person. I thought I needed my lover, my best friend, my companion, my caretaker, someone to take care of and my muse all in one person. But I didn't, and I don't. As much as I want to let him know about this amazing new combo of nice cream and hot oats I have discovered (thanks to Sophie), text him a food photo and excitedly tell him I am going to make him a bowl of it ASAP, I won't.
Some days I miss him so deeply and all I want is to see his number pop up on my phone (I deleted his contact info but still have his number memorized), calling me, or hear his distinctive knock on my door. I imagine nestling into my safe space between his chest and armpit, smelling his wonderful body, and everything being ok again. Some moments I wish more than anything that he would get in touch and let me know he still loves me, that he made a mistake and wants to be together again. I miss his laugh. I miss his eyebrows. I miss his voice. I miss his tummy. I miss thrift shopping together. I miss showing each other new albums and artists. I miss our trips to Wells. I miss his wonderful family who pretty much adopted me while we were together. I miss eating SO MUCH food together. I miss sharing our lives and telling him things I wouldn't tell anyone else. I miss the absolute comfort we had in one another's presence. I miss growing beside each other, as two whole people that enriched the other's life. But as my exceedingly wise soul sister reminded me on Saturday: at once I can love someone, I can miss someone, and I can know I'm better on my own. I'm still trying to mend my utterly shattered heart so a large part of me is hopeful that one day we'll get back together: because wasn't he The One? Weren't we always meant to be together, ever since we had crushes on each other from the beginning of high school but were both too shy to do anything about it until 6 years later and 2 and half years ago? Wasn't he MY PERSON?
I am basically confused about everything in this shitty situation. Every morning I wake up hurting because I feel like the one person I loved so wholly for 36 months coldly threw me away like a piece of trash. Obviously this is a biased perspective and I am still in Angry Phase; I'm sure he sees things very differently. But one thing I am thankfully certain of - no matter what the future holds - is that I need to be single right now. I need to be on my own, take care of myself and journey inwards with the help of medicinal plants, meditation, exercise, travel, mum, friends, laughter and tears. When you break a bone, it grows back strongest in the place it was shattered.
BLUEBERRY NICE CREAM with MAPLE OATS + PB
Maple oats:
1/3 cup rolled oats
2/3 cup cold water
Pinch salt
3 tablespoons maple syrup
Blueberry nice cream:
3 frozen bananas
1/4 cup frozen blueberries
1/4 teaspoon vanilla powder
1/4 cup almond milk
Toppings:
2 tablespoons peanut butter
Handful dark chocolate chunks
Handful frozen blueberries
To cook the oats: stir the oats into the water with the salt in a small pot and bring to a boil. Once bubbling, turn down to low heat and cook until you reach the consistency you like. You can add some almond milk if it gets too thick. Stir in the maple syrup. As the oats cook, make your nice cream.
To make the nice cream: blend all ingredients until purple and like soft serve. Scoop into a chilled bowl. Pour your oats over the nice cream and top with some goodies. Enjoy immediately!

MAGICAL GREEN SMOOTHIE
I am focusing on my healing my broken heart and mind with whole foods, exercise, friendship, self love and time spent outdoors among the trees and moss. I am learning about the wonderful medicinal properties of particular plants, and discovering how they can help me to feel better mentally, emotionally and physically. One of these plants is the humble mushroom. There are so many different varieties: some poisonous, some magical, some medicinal. As long as they're aren't the poisonous kind, I am totally open to seeing how all these little fungi can be of service to me, my spirit and my body.
//
MAGICAL GREEN SMOOTHIE
2 frozen bananas
1/4 cup mint leaves
1 teaspoon spirulina powder
1 1/2 cups chilled coconut milk
1 teaspoon ginger powder
1 teaspoon mushroom powder (ex. reishi, chaga, whatever you like...)
Blend all the ingredients together until smooth! Enjoy!

PEANUT BUTTER OAT BARS
I threw this recipe together for a potluck on Sunday and there are two things you need to know about it: it takes 10 minutes to make and disappears even quicker.
X
PEANUT BUTTER OAT BARS
1 1/2 cups rolled oats
3/4 cup pumpkin seeds
2 tablespoons hemp seeds
2 tablespoons chia seeds
1/4 cup cacao nibs
1/2 teaspoon vanilla powder
1/4 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup coconut oil
1/4 cup maple syrup
Pinch Himayan salt
Stir together all the dry ingredients then stir in the wet and mix until everything is evenly coated and the mixture is thoroughly moist and sticks together (i.e. isn't crumbly). Press into a lined bread loaf pan and freeze until solid, around 10 minutes. Optional: top with chocolate drizzle!

GLAZED CHOCOLATE DONUT HOLES
Baaaaaabes: it's donut hole time again. I shared a recipe for vanilla donut holes (inspired by Lee Tilghman) a few weeks months ago and you all seemed to love it so I figured I'd provide a chocolate version as well. But more honestly: I just wanted glazed chocolate Tim Bits so I made my own raw vegan ones. I am truly a selfish human and have no shame in admitting it.
These are rich, chocolate-y, sweet and give your body energy to keep doing whatever you're doing because they're secretly full of nutritious ingredients like oats and dried fruit. They are perfect as a dessert, snack, energy bite, addition to breakfast... I could go on. Basically: eat them whenever you want. And even more generally: EAT WHATEVER YOU WANT WHENEVER YOU WANT. Life is too short to restrict the good stuff (i.e. food). I am focusing my energy on filling my days up with people and activities I love that make me more of who I want to be, and cutting out the shit that makes me less of who I want to be. It's a pretty simple formula for a huge increase in happiness. Much love to you, my darlings. You keep me going. You and RuPaul.
Oh and final note: I am honoured to be featured on the podcast Chloe's Countertop! Chloe is an amazing soul and our interview was a lot of fun. Listen here.
X
GLAZED CHOCOLATE DONUT HOLES
Donut holes:
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup walnuts (preferably soaked for 4 hours in water then rinsed)
1 cup dates
Heaping 1/4 cup cacao powder
2 tablespoons coconut oil
Pinch Himalayan salt
Glaze:
3 tablespoons coconut oil
2 tablespoons maple syrup
1/8 teaspoon vanilla powder
To make the donut holes: grind all the ingredients into a thick, moist dough in a food processor. Roll into balls and put in the freezer until cold and firm, around 20 minutes.
To make the glaze: melt the coconut oil on low heat, turn off the heat then whisk in the syrup and vanilla. It will take a second or two but pretty quickly it'll combine into a thin caramel-y consistency. Dip the solid donut holes into the glaze, covering each one completely. Put them back in the freezer until the glaze has hardened, then repeat until you use up all the glaze (you will probably have to re-whisk the glaze every time before re-dipping). I dipped them and put them back in the freezer three times total. Store the donut holes in the fridge for up to a week.
NOTES: I used pitted, dried Deglet Nour dates that were still quite gooey; I'd recommend using these because they provide an amazing moist caramel-y flavour and sweetness, but any date will do. You can replace walnuts with any other nut, seed or dried coconut meat. You can replace rolled oats with buckwheat groats, dried coconut meat or more walnuts. You can replace vanilla powder with vanilla extract.

ORANGE CRUSH SMOOTHIE
I thought this smoothie was gonna taste not-as-good as it did. It has some veggies snuck in but you can't even tell: it's sweet, frosty and delicious. Reminded me of a slushie. Music recommendation of the day: Jessy Lanza's album: Oh No. Kinda makes me think of FKA twigs but more fun. And you KNOW I need more fun in my life right now, honey. ENOUGH TEARS. I'm single and it's cool. I'm dealing with anxiety and depression and it's cool. I can do this. I am Woman. Music really helps.
ORANGE CRUSH SMOOTHIE
1 cup frozen mango or banana
1 cup pineapple
1 orange bell pepper
1 carrot
1 tablespoon baobab powder (optional)
2 cups chilled coconut water
Blend it all up and enjoy!

RAW VEGAN BLISS BALLS
It's bout time for another post, hey? So here I am, loyally yours, with bliss balls. These are pretty much anything you want them to be: dessert, snack, energy bite, whatever. Heck, eat them all for dinner if you wanna. They are dense and nutritious and chocolately and really quick to make. I tried to keep the ingredients simple and as usual, there are a ton of substitution options in case you don't have all the ingredients.
X
RAW VEGAN BLISS BALLS
Balls:
1/4 cup cacao powder
Pinch Himalayan salt
1/4 teaspoon vanilla powder
1 tablespoon maca powder
1 cup walnuts, preferably soaked for 4 hours in water then rinsed
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup dates
2-3 tablespoons coconut oil, as needed
1-2 tablespoons water, if needed
Coatings:
Sesame seeds
Hemp seeds
Maca powder
Cacao powder
To make the balls: in a food processor, grind the dry ingredients into a rough flour. Add the rest of the ingredients and keep processing until a moist dough is formed. Ideally it will form itself into a ball, or at least when you press some of the mixture between your fingers, it will hold its shape and your fingers will be slightly oily. If the mixture is too crumbly, add more water, coconut oil, or dates. If it's too moist, add some more oats.
Roll the dough into balls and then coat in whatever you like! For the ones pictured, I used sesame seeds, hemp seeds, maca powder and cacao powder. Other ideas: cinnamon, berry powder, coconut flakes... it's up to you! Leave them in the fridge for a couple hours or eat right away. Enjoy!
NOTES: If you don't have maca powder, don't sweat it, just leave it out. You can use vanilla extract instead of vanilla powder. You can use cocoa powder instead of cacao powder. You can use any other nuts or seeds instead of oats and walnuts.

A SMOOTHIE FOR EMOTIONAL STRENGTH
Alright, folks: life can be really freaking rough sometimes. This post is gonna be dark for a sec but I promise the ending is hopeful.
So my days are constant battles between my newly realized (and yet/soon to be diagnosed) mental issues, this horrific break up I never saw coming, and the cocktail of both of them. #Party. Shit has been tough this weekend, I literally just stayed in bed listening to sad music, not eating. I didn't have the courage or energy to do anything else. But this evening I GOT UP. I GOT OUT OF BED. I made this smoothie and I am POSTING IT. This bout of depression is ending, I can feel my mood changing and my motivation coming back. I am going to focus on activities that make me happy or at least distracted. I'm gonna get back to the gym, see my friends, laugh, dance, work, travel and keep on truckin'. I am also taking steps to get the professional help I need. This smoothie is the colour of sunlight for a reason: I wanted something inspirational and full of light. I CAN and WILL get through this. I am strong and will be stronger. I am whole and will find more wholeness in myself. I love myself and that is enough. XO P.S. this album rocks.
