Jo Chandler did a variety of things in her career before she turned to teen novels, including writing feature articles for a number of magazines and newspapers and editing a few others. Her first published novel is This Side of Forever.

Along with writing novels for young people, she is most proud of the work she did with Wind Youth Services, a non-profit organization that provides shelter and assistance to teenagers living on the streets and those escaping unsafe environments.

Chandler worked with youth ages 14 and up. Under her oversight as newspaper advisor, they produced Street Breeze, a tabloid distributed quarterly throughout metropolitan Sacramento. The newspaper, Chandler’s brainchild, was the first of its kind in California.

“If you get stuck, get away from your desk. Take a walk, take a bath, go to sleep, make a pie, draw, listen to music, meditate, exercise; whatever you do, don't just stick there scowling at the problem. But don't make telephone calls or go to a party; if you do, other people's words will pour in where your lost words should be. Open a gap for them, create a space. Be patient."

Stephen Chbosky
“I sat down and tried to write a story.

"Ian MacArthur is a wonderful sweet fellow who wears glasses and peers out of them with delight."

That was the first sentence. The problem was that I just couldn't think of the next one. After cleaning my room three times, I decided to leave Ian alone for a while because I was starting to get mad at him.”
