Who am I? British (no sympathy please). Child of the 50s & 60s. Lancashire born and bred, but now living in Sheffield. My career has always been as a psychologist, working with people with neurological and mental health problems and clients, offenders and patients in the civil and criminal justice systems. I’ve been a university lecturer too.

I’m not given to boasting, but if there is one that I am especially proud of it is Hartland's Medical and Dental Hypnosis (2001). In my retirement, I’ve published three books on the theme of ‘Universal Awareness’ (more commonly expressed as ‘universal consciousn

This book is a wide-ranging review of what is known about sleep — its physical and psychological nature, why it is so important for a healthy mind and body, and what can go wrong and what to do about it. It’s very technical but written in a reader-fr ...more

Hypnotherapy by Michael Heap
“It seems to be the fate of all therapeutic models and the techniques derived from them that they are extended into areas beyond those in which they have a valid application. Indeed the range of valid application can be very narrow or even non-existent.”

“The absurdities of life provide rich material indeed for the student of human psychology. There is scarcely a limit to the degree to which people - you and I and everyone else - may be persuaded to behave and think in ways that are illogical, meaningless and bizarre while believing the opposite to be the case.
The 'Skeptical Adversaria', Summer 2008.”

I have mixed feelings about some of this book, but Richard Dawkins has such a brilliant mind and, for the most part, it shines through in much of his writing. Hence 4 stars. Religion is something people DO. If they didn't do it, it wouldn't exist. Th ...more

“The universe, of which you are a part, does not have ‘an appearance’! All we can say is that the universe ‘is’.”
Michael Heap, The Meaning of Universal Awareness: A Rational Foundation

“The universe creates amazing maps of itself at these very rare locations in its structure that we identify as sentient beings. And for this achievement, may we not truly say, ‘What a Wonderful World’?”
Michael Heap, The Meaning of Universal Awareness: A Rational Foundation

“Our being is in our doing, and when we stop doing, we stop being.”
Michael Heap, Universal Awareness: A Theory of the Soul

“I insist that if you put together mainstream public and private medicine, alternative or complementary medicine, commercially available, across-the-counter remedies, and so on, then you have a healing industry the collective scale of which vastly outstrips whatever it is really capable of achieving. In short, there seems to me to be far too much of it about.

“The purpose of therapy is to authenticate the therapist.
Skeptical Intelligencer (4), 2005”

“If you survey healing throughout history and across contemporary cultures, and even within our own culture, you will encounter an extraordinary and fascinating range of human behaviour and beliefs, bounded only by the healer's own imagination and the compliance of those seeking to be healed, and therefore unbounded. I think this is more so than in any context other than religion.
Skeptical Intelligencer (4), 2005”

“The person you are is an activity that your body engages in rather than your body itself. You are an activity! It is therefore possible to state, ‘I do, therefore I am.”
