Marriage Is Meant for Connection

“In God’s plan men and women need each other.”

1 Corinthians 11:11 (TLB)

Marriage doesn’t solve your problems. Marriage does not create your problems. Marriage reveals your problems. It simply magnifies what was already a problem when you were living as a single adult.

So if marriage doesn’t solve your problems, what does marriage do? Why did God design marriage in the first place?

God created marriage for the connection of men and women.

The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 11:11, “In God’s plan men and women need each other” (TLB).

Whether or not you get married, if you’re a woman, you need men in your life; if you’re a man, you need women in your life. Why? Because nobody holds the full image of God. Women get part of it and men get part of it, and we need each other. God wired us this way. God thought up gender, sex, and marriage. What a God!

Did you ever wonder why God made man first and then woman a little bit later? Why didn’t he make them both at the same time?

I think he did it for Adam’s benefit. I think he wanted Adam to realize how much he needed women in his life.

Genesis 2:18 says, “It isn’t good for man to be alone; I will make a companion for him” (TLB).

You need companions in all different areas of your life. But marriage is a particularly significant way to provide companionship; it’s in a relational class all by itself.

Here’s what Jesus had to say about it: “‘God made them male and female’ from the beginning of creation. ‘This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.’ Since they are no longer two but one, let no one split apart what God has joined together” (Mark 10:6-9 NLT).

This passage makes three major points about marriage:

1. Marriage is God’s plan. It’s not a tradition you can just throw out.
2. Marriage is between a man and a woman. Their body parts fit together for a purpose—the creation of everybody else.
3. Marriage is designed to be permanent. That doesn’t always happen. God is always ready and willing to forgive you when you don’t live up to his standards. But marriage is meant to be for life.

Do you realize how radical those three statements are? Even if many people don’t believe them, they’re still the truth!

The reality of life today is that many people live outside of this marriage ideal. But just because we live in the real, not necessarily the ideal, doesn’t mean we get to say the ideal doesn’t exist.

The ideal is still the way God designed marriage. And when you choose to live inside of that design, you’ll reap the benefits of connection that God intended marriage to provide.

Dos Maneras en que el Espíritu Santo te Guía

“Enséñame cómo vivir, oh Señor. Guíame por el camino correcto”. Salmo 27:11 (NTV)

Puede parecer obvio, pero una cosa que puede impedirte conocer la voluntad de Dios es no preguntársela. Santiago 4:2 dice: “no tienen lo que desean porque no se lo piden a Dios”. Dios conoce los detalles de tu vida mejor que tú. Por eso, contrata a tu “consejero” y hazle preguntas específicas. Él te guiará a través de tus circunstancias y sentimientos.

Piénsalo: no sólo tienes el libro guía, la Biblia. También tienes al autor hablándote al oído. Cuando te convertiste en creyente, Dios puso el Espíritu Santo dentro de ti, y desde entonces Él te ha estado enseñando a escuchar y responder al consejo del Espíritu Santo. Dios conoce cada paso del viaje y comprende las bendiciones y los peligros que se avecinan. Sabe dónde has estado y a dónde vas, y conoce el mejor camino que debes tomar.

La principal forma en que el Espíritu Santo te guía es recordándote lo que has leído en la Biblia. Por eso memorizamos las Escrituras. Guarda su Palabra en nuestra mente, y el Espíritu Santo nos ayuda a recordar.

La otra forma en que Dios te guía es mediante impresiones. Dios te dio un cerebro, y quiere que lo uses. Dios no te controlará; te ha dado libre albedrío. Pero te dará una idea, y cuando respondas a ella, Él comenzará a completar los detalles.

Cuando Dios te da una idea, eso se llama inspiración. Cuando el Diablo te da una idea, eso se llama tentación. Cuando necesites saber la diferencia, pregunta: “Enséñame cómo vivir, oh Señor. Guíame por el camino correcto” Salmo 27:11 (NTV).

Are You Serving God or Money?

“No one can serve two masters . . . You cannot serve both God and money.”

Luke 16:13 (NIV)

If God told you to give something away and you said, “God, I could give anything else away, but not that,” then you don’t own that thing—it owns you.

Luke 16:13 says, “No one can serve two masters . . . You cannot serve both God and money” (NIV).

You’ve got to decide whom or what you’re going to serve—and your giving will reflect your decision. If God is Lord of your life, then he should be Lord of your wallet too.

There once was a wealthy man who gave to Christian causes far above his tithe. But it hadn’t always been that way for him. Years ago, he had met with a financial planner. After they had talked for a while, the financial planner took a sheet of paper and drew a box. Outside of the box, he drew two things: a dollar sign representing money and a cross representing Christ.

He said, “I hear two things vying for your attention. I can’t help you plan your life until you tell me which of these things you want in the center of that box, which represents your life.”

The wealthy man thought about it for a moment and then said, “I want Christ at the center of my life.” That was a turning point—that was when he started investing in eternity.

If someone drew a box representing your life and asked what was in the center of it, what would you say? Would you place a cross or a dollar sign inside the box? Would your bank statement support your answer? You can say that something holds first place in your life, but the way you spend your time and money reveals the truth.

When it comes to your finances, you have to make two key decisions: First, who will be your master? Second, where you will put your money—in eternity or in the here and now?

Jesus said, “Store up riches for yourselves in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and robbers cannot break in and steal. For your heart will always be where your riches are” (Matthew 6:20-21 GNT).

God doesn’t need your money. He wants what it represents: your heart. You can show God that he has your whole heart by surrendering control of your money to him. Commit today to giving what he tells you to give in service to him and others.

La Guía de Dios no te Dejará Confundido

“Te abriste camino a través del mar y tu sendero atravesó las poderosas aguas, ¡una senda que nadie sabía que estaba allí!” Salmo 77:19 (NTV)

Dios puede usar impresiones para hablarte. Puede usar las circunstancias. Incluso puede usar el dolor. Puede usar lo que quiera usar. Oswald Chambers dijo: “Dios es el Gran Ingeniero, creando circunstancias para provocar momentos en nuestras vidas de importancia divina, llevándonos a citas divinas”.

La Biblia dice que Dios trabaja activamente a través de nuestras circunstancias. Por eso no podemos juzgar nuestra situación al margen de la sabiduría de Dios. En otras palabras, debemos dejar que Dios interprete nuestras circunstancias. Sólo Él es capaz de comprender todos los hechos, y sólo Él ve el significado de cada detalle. Por eso es tan importante que lo comprobemos todo con su Palabra.

Si te sientes abrumado o confundido con respecto a una decisión, es posible que estés atrapado en ti mismo y no en la voz de Dios. La Biblia dice: “Dios no es un Dios de desorden, sino de paz” 1 Corintios 14:33 (NTV). Él no es el autor de la confusión. Así que si te sientes confundido, ¿adivina qué? No es la voz de Dios la que habla en tu vida.

Muchas veces nos encontramos con enormes barreras financieras, espirituales o físicas. Es entonces cuando necesitamos confesar: “Dios, hay montañas a ambos lados y una barrera infranqueable frente a mí”. Y entonces esperamos que Dios responda: “Te tengo exactamente donde quiero que estés. Mira esto”. Dios hará un camino donde parece que no hay camino.

El Salmo 77:19 dice: “Te abriste camino a través del mar y tu sendero atravesó las poderosas aguas, ¡una senda que nadie sabía que estaba allí!” (NTV).

Cuando no sepas qué hacer, Dios te guiará. Él no te diseñó para ir por la vida con tu propia ingenuidad y poder. No tienes que esperar que puedas resolver todas las cosas. Dios quiere guiarte por el camino correcto, y lo hará cuando te rindas a Él y busques su guía.

Don’t Worry, Trust God!

“And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:19 (NLT)

You can be a hero one day and a zero the next day, a millionaire one day and bankrupt the next. No matter how much you make, no matter how much you save, finances are uncertain.

So you worry. But what does the Bible say about worrying over money?

1. It’s unreasonable. Matthew 6:25 says, “Do not to worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? (NIV). You’re going to have fears in life, but you don’t need to fear a lack of finances. Even bankruptcy does not have to defeat you. Life is more than just the accumulation of things. Be concerned about what’s truly important.

2. It’s unnatural. Jesus reminded people that there’s no need for God’s creation to worry: “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” (Matthew 6:26 NIV)

3. It’s unnecessary (Matthew 6:30). Financial fears come from a misunderstanding about God and what he’s promised to do for you. He’s assumed responsibility for your needs. Jesus said, “See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin . . . If that is how God clothes the grass of the field . . . will he not much more clothe you?” (Matthew 6:28-30 NIV). God is your Father; you are his child; he’s going to care for your needs.

When you worry, you’re trying to play God. You’re assuming responsibility for something that God has said he will take care of. Paul says in Philippians 4:19, “And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus” (NLT).

God knows what’s going on in your life—and in your wallet. He knows all your needs even before you ask. And you can trust him to take care of you.

Cómo Demostrar Amor a una Persona Egoísta o Exigente

“El amor nunca se da por vencido, jamás pierde la fe, siempre tiene esperanzas y se mantiene firme en toda circunstancia”. 1 Corintios 13:7 (NTV)  

El amor puede ser absolutamente agotador. No dejes que nadie te engañe. El tipo de amor que realmente marca la diferencia en este mundo te dejará sin nada.

A veces sientes que no tienes más amor para dar. Tal vez tienes un trabajo que requiere interactuar con mucha gente, como la enseñanza, las ventas o el servicio al cliente, y llegas a casa y piensas: “No puedo hacer frente a otra necesidad, otro problema o adversidad”. Así que te cierras.

Otro caso es el de la necesidad de mostrar amor a una persona que es exigente, que actúa de forma egoísta y que nunca te devuelve el amor. Y te dices a ti mismo: “Se acabó. No más”.

Aunque esa es una respuesta perfectamente natural y totalmente humana, no es precisamente el modelo de amor al que Dios nos llama en la Biblia. La Biblia dice: “El amor nunca se da por vencido, jamás pierde la fe, siempre tiene esperanzas y se mantiene firme en toda circunstancia” 1 Corintios 13:7 (NTV). El amor nunca se rinde.

¿Cómo puedes tener esa clase de amor persistente por otra persona? Tienes que abastecerte de combustible.

Cuando mis hijos eran pequeños, recuerdo haber llevado a la familia a un espectáculo aéreo cercano. Era tan impresionante ver cómo conectaban un avión cisterna a un avión en vuelo para abastecerlo de combustible. Nunca lo olvidaré.

Pero, ¿se imaginan que alguien que vuele un avión diga: “No necesito reabastecimiento de combustible”? El avión se estrellaría y ardería. En un vuelo de larga distancia, un avión tiene que reabastecerse de combustible.

Para dar el tipo de amor persistente que Dios quiere que des, tienes que reabastecer tu tanque de amor. Mira a tu alrededor y verás que la sociedad está llena de escombros de relaciones que se han estrellado y quemado porque la gente no reabasteció su amor.

¿Cómo reabastecer tu tanque de amor? Empieza por dejar que Dios te ame. “Nosotros amamos porque él nos amó primero” 1 Juan 4: 19 (NVI). Cuando estés agotado, cansado e incapaz de imaginarte mostrando amor a alguien más, recuerda que Dios te amó tanto que envió a su Hijo a morir por ti.

Eso sí que es combustible. Eso es lo que te hace seguir adelante cuando quieres darte por vencido.

Four Heart Attitudes for Giving

“You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. ‘For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.”

2 Corinthians 9:7 (NLT)

When it comes to giving, God is much more interested in what’s in your heart than what’s in your wallet. What he really wants is your willingness—not your wealth.

The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 9:7, “You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. ‘For God loves a person who gives cheerfully’” (NLT). This verse offers four key heart attitudes you should have when you give.

1. Give thoughtfully. Don’t give impulsively. The most spiritual kind of giving is when you think about it, pray about it, and then make up your mind about it. God wants your giving to be important and meaningful in your life—so he wants you to plan for it.

2. Give enthusiastically. Don’t just think, “I have to give!” Give because you know God’s going to do something big in your heart when you become a generous person.

3. Give voluntarily. Any time someone pressures you to give, don’t do it. God’s not going to bless that kind of giving anyway. But when you feel God challenging you to give, that’s the time to give generously and voluntarily!

4. Give cheerfully. Give with joy! One of the Greek words for “offering” has the same root as the word “hilarious.” God wants you to enjoy giving to him and to others.

Next time you’re considering whether to give or how much to give, remember that God’s greatest concern is your heart. When you give thoughtfully, enthusiastically, voluntarily, and cheerfully, then you know that’s a gift God will bless!

Haz que tu Amor y tus Habilidades Trabajen Juntos

“Todo lo que hagan, háganlo con amor” . 1 Corintios 16:14 (TLA)

El apóstol Pablo dijo, “todo lo que hagan, háganlo con amor” 1 Corintios 16:14 (TLA).

Él no dice algo sino todo lo que hagan. También dice, “Puedo entregar todo lo que tengo para ayudar a los demás… Pero si no tengo amor, eso no me sirve de nada” 1 Corintios 13:3 (PDT).

El punto es que cualquier actividad puede convertirse en adoración cuando está fundamentada en el amor de Cristo. Cuando eso sucede, el amor de Dios es expresado a través tuyo hacia tus compañeros de trabajo, clientes y socios. La madre teresa dijo, “No es lo que haces lo que importa, sino la cantidad de amor que pones en ello”.

El filántropo inglés John Ruskin una vez dijo, “Cuando el amor y la habilidad trabajan juntos, el resultado es una obra maestra”.

Así que, quiero que hagas una oración cada día de esta semana —ya sea en tu hogar o en la escuela, en tu jardín o tu vecindario, o donde trabajes. Quiero que ores, “Padre, hoy quiero adorarte a través de mi trabajo. Quiero expresar mis dones. Quiero hacerlo como si lo estuviera haciendo para ti, y quiero hacerlo en amor”.

“Por eso, hermanos míos, ya que Dios es tan bueno con ustedes, les ruego que dediquen toda su vida a servirle y a hacer todo lo que a él le agrada. Así es como se le debe adorar” Romanos 12:1 (TLA).

Save for Tomorrow, Don’t Just Live for Today

“The wise man saves for the future, but the foolish man spends whatever he gets.”

Proverbs 21:20 (TLB)

John D. Rockefeller was the wealthiest man of his time and was often asked about the secret of his wealth. His answer became known as the 10-10-80 principle. He’d tell people that he got wealthy by giving away the first 10 percent of whatever he made; the second 10 percent went into savings, and he lived on the remaining 80 percent.

Proverbs 21:20 says, “The wise man saves for the future, but the foolish man spends whatever he gets” (TLB).

Saving is one way that God tests you in your finances—to see if you will be responsible with what he’s given you. If you’re saving for the future right now, that’s smart. If you’re not saving anything, that’s just foolish. God wants you to tithe (to give the first 10 percent of your income through your church), and then he wants you to save for the future.

You may think you can’t live on 80 percent of your income, but if you can’t, you’re likely just living beyond your means. You’re not managing your money well; you are spending more than you actually have. Remember, God tests you through your finances. Do you want God to find you faithful with your money?

The 10-10-80 principle is the exact opposite of what most cultures teach. Culture says to pay all your bills first—but then you may not have any money for saving and tithing. God says, “Pay me first, then pay yourself second (savings), and then pay your bills after that.” That is the order God blesses—and he wants you to set up a budget that makes that order possible.

If you’re not saving anything, you have a “live for today” mentality. That kind of mindset says, “I’ve got it now, so I’ll spend it now. Forget about tomorrow!”

God doesn’t just want you to think about tomorrow. He wants you to plan for tomorrow so that you have enough to do the things he wants you to do.

It’s smart to put off a purchase today that will better allow you to live your purpose tomorrow. And you can do it! Saving is a spiritual discipline, and God will give you all the grace you need to take the hard steps.

Don’t live just for today. Learn to do whatever it takes to save money for the future. This is God’s way of doing things.

When you ignore God’s principles, you’re asking for financial stress. When you do it God’s way, you’ll be at peace.

Ama a las Personas de Corazón

“Dios es testigo de cuánto los quiero a todos con el entrañable amor de Cristo Jesús”.  Filipenses 1:8 (NVI)

He descubierto que si las personas no están en mi corazón, me ponen los nervios de punta. Si no tienes a tus hijos en tu corazón, te ponen los nervios de punta. Si no tienes a tu cónyuge en tu corazón, ¿adivina quién te pone los nervios de punta?

La razón por la que tantos matrimonios fracasan es porque los cónyuges están reaccionando el uno al otro desde su mente y no desde su corazón. Cuando tu esposa dice: “Me siento deprimida”, escúchala; es una situación real. Cuando tu marido diga: “No creo que esto sea lo correcto; deberíamos hacerlo de esta otra manera”, escúchalo.

El amor de corazón empieza por entender por qué alguien siente lo que siente. Haz preguntas y luego escucha. Escucha el dolor, identifica los problemas, conoce lo que provoca a tu pareja. Tienes que entender los estados de ánimo de las personas más cercanas a ti, la razón por la que actúan como lo hacen. Si te importa, estarás consciente.

¿Cómo puedes amar a personas que te resultan antipáticas, aunque las entiendas y entiendas sus estados de ánimo? “Dios es testigo de cuánto los quiero a todos con el entrañable amor de Cristo Jesús” (Filipenses 1: 8 NVI). En griego, la palabra afecto es la palabra para las entrañas. En la sociedad griega, los griegos pensaban que la sede de las emociones estaba en el estómago, el hígado, los órganos internos.

Pablo estaba diciendo: “Tengo un entrañable sentimiento de amor por ti”. Eso no es un tipo de amor natural. Es un tipo de amor sobrenatural. Por eso Pablo dijo que no es de él mismo, sino que es el afecto de Cristo Jesús. El amor humano se desgasta, se seca y muere en la vid. El único tipo de amor que perdura a pesar del dolor y las dificultades en circunstancias difíciles es el amor de Dios: el afecto de Jesucristo.

Entonces, ¿cómo se consigue este tipo de amor entrañable? “Dios ha derramado su amor en nuestro corazón por el Espíritu Santo que nos ha dado” Romanos 5:5 (NVI). El amor de Dios no es algo que puedas crear. Es algo que el Espíritu Santo derrama en ti al dejarlo vivir en ti día a día.
