The Kipnuk Story - My perspective
Kipnuk the Talking Dog: The first book in a series of stories about the Adventures of Kipnuk the Talking Dog - A lovable Alaskan malamute with a lot to say!Heather Wolf
The Kipnuk book is a very simple story that I wrote, based on the style of traditional stories that I remember from childhood. My favorite stories were usually ones in which a moral lesson was taught & the main character saves the day. One of my favorite stories from childhood was the Disney classic, Bambi. Though this story at one point is very sad, it has a great message of hope & overcoming. In addition, the film version is amazing with vocals, chorus and classical music so different from today. The song "Little April Showers" and others are really special and enhance the story greatly. When I was young, I would listen to records of the story, accompanied by a book. I remember these songs really helping me to visualize each scene. When beginning to write children's books, I envisioned the characters in my book to have a similar look and feel to that classic story. I'm an artist & would like to have very detailed future books with hand painted versions of the book available. I also would like to someday create short films based on the characters in my collection.
There are many other stories that came to me before the Kipnuk story, however, that is the first one that I decided to pen. Many of the other characters are similar to Kipnuk & have love and compassion at the core of the story. I hope to someday be able to write the stories for future readers. I had a very modest budget for this book and it was written at quite a challenging time and so, I did the best that I could with what I had. I hope to get more reader feedback from the book. So far, from the reader feedback that I've recieved, the children seem to like the story. That is what is most important to me. I hope to hear some reviews from a kid's perspective, so feel free to message me or post to Amazon if you have read the book.
As a children's coach & teacher, I've spent many hours telling stories & singing songs to the children that I've taught. This is the way the storytelling was done in the past, by word of mouth & by acting out the characters. My background is also in Acting & Theatre & when writing the story, I see so much more to the story than is on the page. There is a scene when Owl rescues Kipnuk & if you are reading the story to your child, you can explain what Kipnuk's experience might be like being carried up in the air by a giant Owl, the wind on his face, seeing things from above, etc. I myself envision this one scene to be quite lengthy, yet when writing the story, it is very short. Many of the scene descriptions that don't have pictures are there to give the child a visual to use their own imagination and add to the story. It is a bit different than some stories, but it's how I felt to write this one. This particular Kipnuk story is much longer than the book and so future versions of this book would continue where the story has been left out. It is simple & when writing it, I thought about how today we need to look back to more traditional things rather than rely on so many visuals. As this is my very first work published, I welcome any criticism whether pro or con, to enable me to enhance future books.
