#NewBook: The Price of Atonement by Mae Clair @MaeClair1 #ghosts #suspense #halloweenread #historical #mystery #harborpointeseries @StoryEmpire
Hi everyone! I hope you’re all doing well.
Today, I’m delighted to announce the release of the first book in the Harbor Pointe Series: The Price of Atonement. I’ve read every novella in the series, and I love them all! You can find the series HERE.
My Review:
A spirit bent on vengeance, and family secrets to be protected at all costs
‘A red sun spooled low on the horizon by the time the carriage reached the midway point of the incline.’ From this lovely opening line, the author takes the reader into the intrigues of 1887 and a pair of unlikely travelling companions with a strange mission before them.
The storyline unfolds gradually as the tension mounts wonderfully. Mae Clair is a master of historical fiction, as well as dual timelines, and she weaves in and out of this time frame and ten years prior seamlessly. With a spirit bent on vengeance, and family secrets to be protected at all costs, the new arrivals have their work cut out for them.
This writer has a penchant for delightfully descriptive prose, and below are some lines that stood out for me …
‘Mist gathered in pockets, a twining, wraith-like breath that made him think of the night Hannah died.’
And …
‘It wasn’t the dead he feared, but his own miserable life. An eternity of carrying a sin that consumed him from the inside.’
And …
‘A wispy tendril of white slithered from the corridor, cleaving the gloaming. Frost sparkled in its path, spreading a webwork of icy splinters wherever it touched.’
The Price of Atonement by Mae Clair gets a resounding five stars from me. If you love a good ghost story, uniquely woven into a historical novel with a backdrop of regrets, secrets, and a dangerous and rocky search for forgiveness, you will love this novella by a talented author. Go and read this book!

NOTE ON RATINGS: I consider a 3-star rating a positive review. Picky about which books I give 5 stars to, I reserve this highest rating for the stories I find stunning and which moved me.
5 STARS: IT WAS AMAZING! I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN! — Highly Recommended.
4 STARS: I WOULD PULL AN ALL-NIGHTER — Go read this book.
3 STARS: IT WAS GOOD! — An okay read. Didn’t love it. Didn’t hate it.
2 STARS: I MAY HAVE LIKED A FEW THINGS —Lacking in some areas: writing, characterisation, and/or problematic plot lines.
1 STAR: NOT MY CUP OF TEA —Lots of issues with this book.

Sally Cronin @sgc58 has a wonderful post showcasing my #poetry book Sorrowful Soul
“Sorrowful Soul is the third book in the Soul Poetry Series by acclaimed author Harmony Kent.
If we’re lucky, we meet twilight at the front door and old age creeps in on the night breeze.
Even if we make it to our twilight years, the more we age, the more loss we must endure as part of the cycle of life. Many of these poems lament death, but they also relate to broken relationships, severed friendships, and the loss of youth. This book of grief poetry is as much about saying goodbye and working through loss as it is about death and love split asunder.”
On this day of remembrance for 9/11, my heart goes out to everyone affected by this disaster.
See Sally’s post with an extract (excerpt) and a lovely review HERE
I’ve closed comments to save you having to answer on both sites. Hugs to you all.
