#BookReview: Once Upon a Time in the Swamp by C S Boyack #Fiction #Post-Apocalyptic @Virgilante @StoryEmpire

Hi everyone. Today I have a book review for you from an author well known to, and loved by, many of us, C S Boyack. With his new book, Craig brings us an engrossing post-apocalyptic read with a wonderful wild-west twist. Here’s my review >>>

About the Book:

Mari and her husband opted for a simple life as farmers. It’s been decades since the world tore itself apart, pitting neighbor against neighbor and family against each other. They were happy in this re-emerging world, until disaster struck.

Mari sets out on a solo quest to avenge the deaths of her family and loss of everything she holds dear. She’s ill equipped for the task, but seems to have time on her hands. Time alone in the wilderness to deal with her personal demons along the way.

She is helped by a few sympathetic elders and a couple of animal companions with lessons Mari can use if she pays attention. Can Mari find justice for her family?

Set in a post apocalyptic, Gulf Coast world, this is a story for fans of the old Spaghetti Westerns.

My Review:

🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟

An engrossing post-apocalyptic tale with a wonderful wild-west twist

This, by far, is the best Boyack book I’ve read, and that’s saying something! While all of his books are filled with humour and fantastic imagination, as well as true-to-life characters and amazing creatures and hugely entertaining animals who are characters in their own right, Once Upon a Time in the Swamp takes the gold medal.

The world building, plot, pacing, and characterisation are all done brilliantly, and this read kept me engrossed. While it deals with heavy topics and covers tragic and violent events, the author deals with these sensitively and the horrors happen off-page, thus sparing the reader. The POV is told from the main character’s perspective, and her courage, strength, and determination are inspiring. I love the kindness of strangers we are shown, which helps offset the rough world of post 2nd civil war America.

Here are some lines I loved …

‘Several hours are lost to me, and I may never get … I don’t want them back.’ … Oh, the truth in this!

And …

‘Must be a sight; a widow woman covered with mud, blood, and snot bawling her eyes out in the moonlight beside a fresh grave.’

And …

(Talking about a gorgeous puppy) ‘Maybe that was her job. My personal emotional sponge.’

My favourite characters were many, ranging from Dirt the obstinate Ox and Worthless the cute puppy dog to Kalilah and Mr Vance. The villains were thoroughly hatable, which takes writing skill, and all the characters came to full-bloodied life.

Once Upon a Time in the Swamp gets a resounding 5 stars from me. Go and buy this book!

***

NOTE ON RATINGS: I consider a 3-star rating a positive review. Picky about which books I give 5 stars to, I reserve this highest rating for the stories I find stunning and which moved me.

5 STARS: IT WAS AMAZING! I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN! — Highly Recommended.
4 STARS: I WOULD PULL AN ALL-NIGHTER — Go read this book.
3 STARS: IT WAS GOOD! — An okay read. Didn’t love it. Didn’t hate it.
2 STARS: I MAY HAVE LIKED A FEW THINGS —Lacking in some areas: writing, characterisation, and/or problematic plot lines.

#BookReview: In the Tree’s Shadow: A collection of stories that exist in your dreams… and nightmares by D L Finn #shortstories #FlashFiction @dlfinnauthor @StoryEmpire

Hi everyone. Today I have a book review for you from an author well known to, and loved by, many of us, D L Finn. With her new book, Denise brings us an entertaining collection of flash fiction and short fiction stories. Here’s my review >>>

About the Book:

A collection of short stories where dreams and nightmares coexist.

Nestled inside these pages, you’ll meet a couple in their golden years who take a trip with an unexpected detour, a boy desperate to give his brother the Christmas gift he asked for, a girl with a small glass dragon who is at the mercy of her cruel uncles, and a young mother who has a recurring dream about murder. You’ll be introduced to worlds where people get second chances and monsters might be allowed their desires, while angels and dragons try to help. Happy endings occur, but perspective can blur the line between good and evil in these twenty-seven tales. Since the stories vary between 99 and 12,000 words, whether you have only five minutes or an entire evening to settle into reading, there is something that will suit your time and taste.

My Review:

🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟

An entertaining collection of flash fiction and short fiction stories.

The author’s love of nature and its magic and wonders shines through in this lovely collection of fiction. Despite the mixture of light and dark stories, you’re in safe hands with this writer, who never leaves you too traumatised. While her tales include serial killers, alcoholics, and evil supernatural, all of them end on a lighter note and are not overly graphic, so the reader gets the best of both worlds. Here are some lines I loved …

‘The cat and I had something in common–our loved ones had left us behind.’

And …

‘Being single grew on me in the same fashion as mold grows on shower grout.’

And …

‘Janie’s heart took off like a rabbit running from a mountain lion.’

I could go on and on as there are so many wonderful one-liners and paragraphs. Had I been well enough, I would have read this in one sitting for sure. As it was, the varying lengths of each story suited me perfectly, and In the Tree’s Shadow gets a solid 4 stars from me. Go and buy this book!

#BookReview: The Stallion and His Peculiar Boy by M.J. Evans #WWII @bookroar_tweets

Hi everyone. Today I have a book review for you from an author new to me, who I discovered via BookRoar, M J Evans. This is an interesting historical read with history about horses I never knew until now. Here’s my review >>>

About the Book:

World War II is raging. Hitler is hiding away the world’s most beautiful purebred horses in a little village in Czechoslovakia. Lipizzaners, Thoroughbreds and the prize Polish Arabians are being used in his experiments to create the perfect war horse. A peculiar twelve-year-old boy from the village named Teodor becomes the groom for one of those special horses – Witez II, one of the most famous Arabian stallions of all time. Witez helps the boy face his challenges and find his voice at a time when little is known about the condition now called “Autism.” The Stallion and His Peculiar Boy blends the suspense of a World War II military rescue operation with the subsequent challenges of resettlement in a new land. Click “Buy Now” on the right to begin the adventure!

My Review:

🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟

An Interesting Historical WWII Read

3.5 Stars

Personally, I would have preferred a book about the autistic boy rather than about the Arabian Stallion, Witez II (pronounced Veetez). The fascinating history of these thoroughbreds and Hitler’s breeding programs, which used stolen horses, could have still been told in vivid detail but with the added bonus of giving the reader a character they could relate to and connect with much more than they can with the horse as the main focal point. The author’s note indicates that Teodor is a fictional character while the horse actually existed; however, I feel much more could have been done to bring alive the experiences and struggles of those with Autism and their carers.

In summary, we have a war raging, an angry husband, a cowed mother, and a son with a condition nobody understood at the time … Autism. The author gives credible descriptions of the behavioural habits and all the other issues which arise from Autism, as well as the knock-on effects to the family and anyone who comes into contact with the twelve-year-old boy. Unfortunately, because the main focus followed the horse, the author missed a great opportunity to bring alive Teodor’s character for the reader.

On the whole, the writing comes across as passive, shifts scenes with no indication to orient the reader, and suffers from filler words and repetition. Despite all of that, the narrative manages to engage the reader and, certainly, intrigued me. Below are some lines which stood out for me …

‘I like a man of few words. They listen better.’

And …

‘The dog walked slowly over to the young man and sat beside him. His howling stopped. He had no more to say.’ … Sorrow so wonderfully expressed for man and dog.

And …

‘Were it not for Witez, he might still be living in that room with no dreams at all.’

All in all, I found this a touching story about a fictional Autistic boy and a true-story of a horse. It brings the reader intriguing history while also being an entertaining read. I give The Stallion and His Peculiar Boy 3.5 stars, which I round up to 4 for rating purposes.

#BookReview: Comfort Zoned by Allison Speka #Romance @bookroar_tweets

Hi everyone. Today I have a book review for you from an author new to me, who I discovered via BookRoar, Allison Speka. This is a fun romance read. Here’s my review >>>

About the Book:

Al has always struggled to feel comfortable in her own skin. When her best friend, and roommate, announces that she’s moving out, Al’s initial reaction is panic. For the first time, she’s on her own, and she must figure out what she wants for herself. When she meets Dean, she’s immediately drawn to him. He’s older, successful, and seems way out of her league. But still, there is an undeniable connection between them. Can Al take control of her life and get the courage to go after what she wants?

Dean appears to have his life together. He’s the owner of a successful restaurant in Chicago and could date any woman he wants. Although charming, he’s a cynic at heart and detests the idea of a committed relationship. But when he meets Al, he just can’t seem to stay away from her. Can he face his past demons and fight for something real for the first time in his life?

My Review:

🌟 🌟 🌟

A fun romance read

Appearances can be deceiving, and none of us knows what another person is going through unless they open up to us. This story follows two characters from alternating points of view, and shows us how much they hide from the world around them.

For a first-time writer, this isn’t a bad read. However, it does suffer from lots of mistakes and hugely passive writing. Over and over, the author uses ‘saddled up’ instead of ‘sidled up’, which pulled me out of the read time and again. As did the over use of filler words, split infinitives, overly descriptive dialogue tags, which told what had been shown, and would have benefited from using some beats instead of tags all the time. Also, spelling errors litter what is otherwise a fun story. Added to all of this, word repetition abounds and could use input from a thesaurus to find alternatives.

Apart from needing a good edit and proofread, I found the storyline entertaining, amusing, and compelling. The writer has a strong voice, which is wonderful for a debut book. Each character shows a clear developmental arc, and a lovely sense of humour threads throughout the narrative. Below are a couple of lines which made me smile …

‘Tom was kind of like the big, loud, jerky older brother that I never wanted.’

And

‘Now I was feeling a little chilly from her icy glare.’ … if not for the passive writing and filler words, this is a fun line, which shows some of the humour I mentioned.

I offer 2.5 stars, rounded up to 3 for rating purposes. With some polishing, this would be an absolute gem of a read, and I wish the author well with her future writing career. I can see Allison Speka going places as she grows and evolves.

#BookReview: Lion Scream: Syllabic Poetry about Southern African Wildlife by Robbie Cheadle #poetry #SouthAfrica #poaching @RobertaEaton17

Hi everyone. Today I have a book review for you from an author well known to, and loved by, many of us, Robbie Cheadle. An important collection of syllabic poetry with essays, photos, and video links. Here’s my review >>>

About the Book:

Do you rely on Earth for your survival?

Lion Scream is a graphic collection of poetry and prose. The book portrays the author’s experiences with South African wildlife and the growing impact of the Sixth Mass Extinction and Climate Change on the natural environment.

Lion Scream
There is no jungle
Only acres of smooth stumps
There is no jungle
No habitat, no food source
Hopeless lion screams tonight

In this reflective collection of syllabic poetry, poet Roberta Cheadle weaves words, emotions, and images as she recounts her soul-stirring journey around South Africa in 2022. She highlights the plight of the animals in the face of the Sixth Mass Extinction, during a visit to Ukutula Lodge & Game Reserve. Lion Roar is a poetic and photographic roadmap to the heart & soul of South Africa with highlights about the increasing impact of global warming on humanity and the greater planet.

My Review:

🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟

A Gripping, Informative Book of Syllabic Poetry and Essays

This book offers the reader a collection of 99-syllable poems, along with essays, photographs, and video links embedded within the eBook version, all dedicated to South Africa and its vast array of wildlife and the endangerment faced due to the greed and cruelty of humans.

I confess to having to skip some of the graphic descriptions of the carnage wrought as it distressed me too much. While not always an enjoyable read due to this, it is most definitely informative and of vital importance.

The poetry is gripping, and the essay-style prose taught me a lot about animals and insects I never knew until reading this eye-opening short volume. The author’s love of her home country and its wildlife shines through in her carefully chosen words and images. And a lot of thought has gone into the layout and information in this little read.

A short fiction story ends the book and addresses the effects of climate change and mental illness.

I give a solid 3.5 stars for Lion Scream, rounded up to 4 for rating purposes.

#NewBook: In the Tree’s Shadow by D L Finn @dlfinnauthor #ShortStories #Fiction

Hi everyone! I hope this finds you well. Today, it gives me great pleasure to have fellow author, blogger, Story Empire Contributor, and friend, D L Finn over to visit. Denise has a new book out, and I’m so happy to help her share the exiting news! This writer loves nature and all its wonders, and her magical outlook shines through in this wonderful new read 🙂

book promo banner for In the Tree's Shadow, a new book of short fiction by D L Finn

Thank you, Harmony, for inviting me to your wonderful blog today to share my latest release, In the Tree’s Shadow.

It’s my pleasure, Denise!

“The Boy” is a story that taps into my experience of being raised in an alcoholic household. However, my mother didn’t have the mental issues that Bella had to deal with, and she–luckily–had a caring father to turn to.

Bella comes home from school after capturing a picture of the boy she’s been seeing down the street. She isn’t sure who he is, and he refuses to talk to her. There is little time to ponder this when she finds her mother has relapsed into drinking and not taking her meds.

I wrote this during my personal short story challenge. I chose the word scary and then found an image to go with the word. I was inspired by a shadow figure walking down the road in the woods. It took me a couple of tries to get everything to fall together while I explored the dark side of alcoholism and mental illness. Bella finds an unexpected happy ending.

BLURB:

EXCERPT:

book cover for In the Tree's Shadow by D L FinnBella snapped the picture right before the boy disappeared. Finally she had proof that he existed. He had been in the same place for the last two weeks, right where the school bus dropped her off by their private road. He wore jeans and a gray hoodie and carried a black backpack. Without glancing back or speaking, he’d vanish into a heavy fog.

She raced down the long driveway to show her mother the photo. Mother sat on the porch in the old wooden rocking chair, sipping iced tea. The hair stood on Bella’s arms when Mother’s bloodshot eyes fixed on her. “Why do you have my camera?” Her words slurred together like they were in a wind tunnel, but the leaves on the trees were still.

“I borrowed it to get a picture of the boy. I got it. Look!” She held the camera up, hoping she was wrong about Mother’s condition. The last three years had been peaceful now that she remained sober and took her meds.

Mother slammed the drink down hard, shattering the glass. “Liar! There’s no boy out there, and stop calling me ‘Mother.’ You know I hate that word.”

Bella sighed at the blood dripping from her mother’s hand. That scary woman had returned.

#BookReview: The Adventures of Izzy and Ella by AJ Cameron #childrensfiction @AJCameron #magic @bookroar_tweets

Hi everyone. Today I have a book review for you from an author new to me, who I discovered via BookRoar, A J Cameron. This is a sweet children’s book, which is rated for an age range between 3 and 8. Here’s my review >>>

About the Book:

Join the exciting adventures of Ella and her beloved dog Izzy, as they explore the world

exploring a new park or facing a tricky obstacle, there’s never a dull moment in their journey.

‘The Adventures of Izzy and Ella’ is a touching and funny tale about the unbreakable bond
between a girl and her furry best friend, and the power of imagination and friendship. Get
ready for an unforgettable journey filled with laughter, excitement, and heartwarming
moments that will warm your heart and spark your sense of adventure.

My Review:

🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟

A sweet children’s book

In this quick, sweet kid’s read, we meet Ella and her dog Izzy, who share a magical adventure which involves a frog in a wooden boat, a field of dancing flowers, and an ant playing a banjo, amongst other wonders. The story is about friendship, helping out people in need, and sticking together.

Amazon rates the book for between 3 years and 8 years; however, I feel that the lower age limit would suit 6 or 7 years and upward for this layout of book, which is great for those young readers just being introduced to chapter books. Otherwise, the child would need an adult to sit and read this with them, which the rhyming style would suit. The illustrations are on the basic side, though, for holding a younger child’s attention while being read to.

The illustrations are simple and charming, and the narrative is written in rhyming prose, which catches the attention and has a lively, engaging rhythm. Rather than use pull quotes, I include a couple of jpegs instead so you can see examples of the illustrations and layout.

The Adventures of Izzy and Ella by AJ Cameron gets a solid four stars from me.
