#BookReview: In the Tree’s Shadow: A collection of stories that exist in your dreams… and nightmares by D L Finn #shortstories #FlashFiction @dlfinnauthor @StoryEmpire

Hi everyone. Today I have a book review for you from an author well known to, and loved by, many of us, D L Finn. With her new book, Denise brings us an entertaining collection of flash fiction and short fiction stories. Here’s my review >>>

About the Book:

A collection of short stories where dreams and nightmares coexist.

Nestled inside these pages, you’ll meet a couple in their golden years who take a trip with an unexpected detour, a boy desperate to give his brother the Christmas gift he asked for, a girl with a small glass dragon who is at the mercy of her cruel uncles, and a young mother who has a recurring dream about murder. You’ll be introduced to worlds where people get second chances and monsters might be allowed their desires, while angels and dragons try to help. Happy endings occur, but perspective can blur the line between good and evil in these twenty-seven tales. Since the stories vary between 99 and 12,000 words, whether you have only five minutes or an entire evening to settle into reading, there is something that will suit your time and taste.

My Review:

🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟

An entertaining collection of flash fiction and short fiction stories.

The author’s love of nature and its magic and wonders shines through in this lovely collection of fiction. Despite the mixture of light and dark stories, you’re in safe hands with this writer, who never leaves you too traumatised. While her tales include serial killers, alcoholics, and evil supernatural, all of them end on a lighter note and are not overly graphic, so the reader gets the best of both worlds. Here are some lines I loved …

‘The cat and I had something in common–our loved ones had left us behind.’

And …

‘Being single grew on me in the same fashion as mold grows on shower grout.’

And …

‘Janie’s heart took off like a rabbit running from a mountain lion.’

I could go on and on as there are so many wonderful one-liners and paragraphs. Had I been well enough, I would have read this in one sitting for sure. As it was, the varying lengths of each story suited me perfectly, and In the Tree’s Shadow gets a solid 4 stars from me. Go and buy this book!
