VIDEO | Lyoto Machida’s Brother Wins MMA Return With Brutal K.O.
Wrestling can be a dominant base to come into MMA with, but if there aren’t good bridges between the disciplines, it can lead to brutal knockouts. Wrestlers; learn to shoot with your hands in front of your head, or better yet; make contact with the guy first and go to the cage before taking them down. We teach fighters to shoot with their hands up, as well as the technique used by Machida to get the knockout. If you lack a wrestling base, occasional knees coming up provide a great discouragement for an open-cage takedown attempt.
If you watch this, Machida did something that is key to do against great fighters and career wrestlers. Bringing up a lone knee will typically cause a veteran wrestler to shift their head mid-shot on instinct. Alternating knees can result in a brutal blow to the head, as guys will often read the first knee and move their head across the body to be clocked by the other knee. That’s exactly what happened here.
For amateur fighters, many guys are not punished for this in the formative stages of their MMA careers for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, many states outlaw any knee to the head as an amateur. This is meant to protect fighters early, but in reality, it actually subjects fighters to a false sense of security until going pro, where guys have the skill, power and technique to do real damage with it. Best to learn to avoid it early.
Second, too many wrestlers get in the habit of shooting to their knees and wrestling, where if there is no action, you are restarted on your feet after the action stalls out. Stalemates don’t occur there in MMA. If you wrestle and want to fight, you need to learn to attack legs without always dropping to your knees.
