What Happened at Lock Haven: Wrestling's Secret Problem:

This is a byproduct of hiring people on their competitive accomplishments in a sport rather than their actual proven coaching credentials.  Personality issues are a common problem with coaches at a lot of wrestling programs.  At some it just lets the program stagnate until the school drops it, at others, it earns only negative publicity.  At a school like Lock Haven, they’re not going to contend for a national title anytime soon.  Letting someone like this fester will only lead to bad publicity or the sport being dropped. 

Fortunately, he was released.  The admin is being given way too free of a pass on this one though.  They clearly knew of the issues.  Rather than deal with it, they say things like “they’re moving in a different direction”.  Every time I see an administrator at a college say that, I instantly think two things;  one, that they’re a nutless douchebag.  Two, that someone f’d up bad.

What is conveniently lost through all of this is the insane amounts of weight wrestlers were expected to lose.  It depresses me to see how apathetic the sport still is at the longtime problem of excessive weight loss in the sport.  If wrestling would ever wise up collectively, it might realize that the refusal to drop weight dropping has lost it way more than pounds on a scale.
