Happy Anniversary to a Houston Broadcasting Icon….
On 11/9/14 , Dave Ward celebrates his 48th anniversary as the longest on-air anchor at ABC 13 KRTK TV – in my town, Houston, TX! Read on, because it doesn’t stop here….
In 2 years (2016) and after 50 (Yes, FIFTY) years, Dave will break ALL records for being the longest on air anchor at any major market television station in the nation and will be inaugurated into the Guinness Book of World Records.
Now just what exactly does that mean?
Well, for starters it is quite an accomplishment – a pièce de ré·sis·tance : the best or most important thing or event. Perhaps the pinnacle in one’s career.
Someone who has been at the same job for almost 50 years? I would call that Epic!
Let me tell you what that means to me….
I moved to Houston in 1977 and that’s when I first met Dave Ward (on television of course, not in person). Dave has this inordinate way of making you feel like he’s in your home sitting down, talking to you about what’s gone on in the news. Never pompous or pretentious, he has this larger than life yet humbling presence that makes you feel – well, comfortable. I’ve watched him report during disasters when you literally fear for your life and this man, with his professionalism and suave confident presence makes you feel like everything’s gonna be all right. Not many newscasters possess this gift and I’m so glad that I’ve been part of this amazing journey with him.
Just as Nik Wallenda made it into the Guinness Book of World Records on November 2nd for his tightrope walk across the Chicago skyline, Dave Ward has accomplished much the same. For almost half a century, this man has defied the odds and walked his own tight rope through the jungles of ratings sweeps, popular opinion and changing technology. He has been steadfast in maintaining his old school southern gentlemanly reporting style which has won the hearts of Houstonians and the nation.
It’s times like these when I’m proud to be a Houstonian, proud to be a Dave Ward fan and proud to support this amazing journalist in his amazing career accomplishment.
Thank you Dave Ward for being you….for giving us your heart and soul and ultimate gift of your professionalism on the airwaves of television.
May I also add that plans for the Golden Anniversary of this remarkable professional’s career are already underway. Stay tuned for further breaking news…

I could not WAIT to start this book and was so glad it was one of a series. I savored this one and Coyote Cornered in the span of 2 days! I’m a hopeless romantic who loves food and wine so this book sucked me in from the start. The author made sure the reader connected with the characters from the very start. Her painstakingly vivid descriptions from the region… to the landscape.. to the smell of the food and the taste of fine wine had me believing I was there. I love a good romance read and Ms. Harman did NOT disappoint. I could easily identify with Elena and her need to become ‘lost’ in a quaint little town living incognito. I felt her loneliness and my heart ached as she tethered on whether to give of herself and let down her guard to this new man who fell into her path. Which brings us to the question…Do you believe in fate? Jordan Kramer is the man every woman could hope to meet! Handsome, sexy, educated, connoisseur of fine cuisine – what’s not to like? The sexual attraction between Elena and Jordan was immediate. The exchanges between these two had me tingling… I can’t lie. I don’t want to give the story away, but I can tell you this love story was amazing. All the elements exist here. You’ve got a crime, suspects, a sexy detective, a beautiful woman….suspense and romance all ‘corked’ up into a fine, well bodied book. My kudos to you Dianne Harman for giving me a totally enjoyable reading experience. I’m hooked and I’m a fan!

This book was incredible! From the very beginning I was taken by Jeremiah, aka ‘Dog’ and his rugged sexy ways. From the moment he laid eyes on Joci, he adored and worshipped her. It just took her a while to kick her insecurities and let this hot man into her life. His ‘never take no for an answer’ spirit and her tenacious drive for independence, coupled for a hot steamy ride.
She was dealt a bad hand in her past relationships. The only bright side to her struggles was her son, Gunnar.
I love how the veterans and love of country were written into the pages of this book. The author has nailed it in her attention to detail and has painted such a beautiful love story while giving us some steam in the sex department. Suffice it to say that if Jeremiah told me to assume the position, I definitely would;)
I also loved how the importance of friends and family were weaved into the story line. A good romance to me is one that captures your attention from the first page and hammers down to a phenomenal finish. Kudos to PJ Fiala! You’ve won yet another fan and I cannot WAIT to see whats next in the pipeline…..You’ve definitely gotten my motor running and I’m heading out on the highway following you….

I was born in a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri named Bridgeton. During my time in Missouri, I explored the Ozarks, swam in the Mississippi River, and played kickball and endless games of hide and seek with the neighborhood kids. Spending summers in Kentucky with my grandmother, Ruth, are the fondest childhood memories for me.
At the age of thirteen, my family moved to Wisconsin to learn to farm. Yes, learn to farm! That was interesting. Taking city kids and throwing them on a farm with twenty-eight cows purchased from the humane society because they had been abused was interesting. I learned to milk cows, the ins and outs of breeding and feeding schedules, the never ending haying in the summer, and trying to stay warm in the winter. Our first winter in Wisconsin we had thirty-six inches of snow in one storm and were snowed in our house for three days! Needless to say, I wasn’t loving Wisconsin.
I am now married with four children and three grandchildren. I have learned to love Wisconsin, though I still hate snow. Wisconsin and the United States are beautiful, and my husband and I travel around by motorcycle seeing new sites and meeting new people. It never ceases to amaze me how many people are interested in where we are going and what we have seen along the way. At every gas station, restaurant, and hotel, we have people come up to us and ask us about what we are doing as well as offer advice on which roads in the area are better than others.

What do a Ouji Board, vintage clothing, sixties music, a deceased rock star, London and the USA present day have in common?
Let me start by introducing you to some of the most original and endearing characters I’ve met within the pages of this incredible read!
Rosalyn – A beautiful, quirky 60’s fashion savvy young woman who has an insatiable addiction to music from the sixties. She is complex but you’ll learn why she can’t let go of her feelings…..trust me. And the fact that she dances to her own tune and doesn’t give a flip what anyone else thinks makes her all the more lovable!Jacqueline – Rosalyn’s best friend and roommate; total opposites but nonetheless a true friend who has been through thick and thin with Rox. She has Rosalyn’s best interests at heart and is very protective of her. A great friend to have.Niles – OMG! Mr. Dreamy in my book! This dapper man had my heart from the moment he was introduced. Hands down, suave, educated, handsome, a tad quirky and mysterious. All the makings of a dream book boyfriend.But WAIT! What about Peter Lane? The rock god from days past….Summoned by Rosalyn on her ouija board who came to be a huge part of Rox and Niles. Peter was definitely dessert for my second book boyfriend in the book. With Peter, though I will have to say he has a side to him that makes you want to slap him upside his head at times…he can be such a devious smart ass! And there are times in the book where he has no business being present in a certain ‘situation’..hehe!I just can’t say enough good things about this book! The author is a master (mistress, should I say) at writing in different POV and incorporating them to where you don’t miss a thing and the flow from one POV to the next is simply lyrical.Rosalyn, Niles and Peter end up being kindred spirits and work together to achieve a very important mission. I’m not going to list any spoilers so you’ll have to trust me on this one.
Successfully experiencing every emotion in a book for me is what determines a good read – this book did just that. I can honestly say that I cried while reading several pages of this book – heart, gut wrenching tears and I honestly did NOT see it coming and I didn’t want this book to end.
So with no spoilers and a warning to have a box of tissues next to you, it is my distinct pleasure to give this book a well deserved FIVE GROOVY, VINYL, FAR OUT Peace Loving Stars!! Well done Ms. Rinella!

Bachelorette Party…Yeah I did it!
This past weekend, I attended my future daughter-in-law’s bachelorette party. YES! I was invited…Me…the soon to be 60 year old mother of the groom. I was over the moon excited that she included me.
We all met in the fabulous Texas Hill Country town of Fredericksburg and from the moment we arrived at our house, called ‘1 Big House’, I knew we were in for an amazing weekend. The bride-to-be and her friends are such wonderful women. The mother of the bride is a dear, dear friend and I’m elated that our 2 children united and will marry. (We set our kids up by the way…..)
For those of you who haven’t been to Fredericksburg,TX… I encourage you to put this on your list of places to visit! The wineries in the Texas Hill Country are amazing! We did the wineries, the tastings and the fellowship of the young ladies in the wedding party, along with the MOG and MOB (aka, Mother of the Groom and Mother of the Bride) was beyond words.
I WILL confess that there were NO strippers, no clubbing and no wild antics. The wildest thing I did was apply a temporary tattoo that said ” I belong to Andra’s bachelorette party…if I’m lost please buy me a drink”
We had a wonderful weekend grazing on a smorgasbord of snacks, a plethora of wine selections and incredible “girl talk”…scavenging the wineries donned in our #TeamBride tshirts…enjoying the down time. My own daughter, who is a bridesmaid was there and it is times like these…when your own are grown and functioning members of society that you enjoy sitting down and having a glass of wine…adult to adult. No longer do you have to worry if they’re drinking underage (which I KNOW my kids did).
I’ve not been to a bachelorette party in …I can’t even remember when, but I totally cast this weekend up as one of my favorites…the memories are sealed in my brain and I can’t wait for the wedding!

The Power of Two Words, Forty Two Friends (and Facebook)
Yesterday, I typed two words in a post on my Facebook page:
Ben & Andra.
I then asked my Facebook friends to contribute two words only per post and to help me write a story for my son and his fiance, that I will make into a book to give them at their wedding. Within seconds after the post went up, I was overwhelmed with joy at the response. Over forty friends contributed! We finished the story today (I’m leaving it exactly as it was written – some thoughts got ahead of others, but I like it that way and did not want to change a thing!
It is with great pleasure and pride that I present to you:

Story Time…
With my son’s wedding fast approaching, I got an incredible idea today… I saw a post on Facebook – it was a picture of two penguins hugging and it asked for each participant to add two words and make a story. (Coincidentally, my son’s fiance looooves pengins)
I thought to myself, ‘just how cool would it be to create a story for them right here from this post; starting out with a picture of these two hugging penguins, the first two words ‘Ben & Andra’, penned by me in the comments then ask my Facebook friends to add to two words and keep it going.
I posted it and in a matter of seconds, people started posting. I was stunned! Post after post fed off the previous post and this is turning out to be a beautiful heart rending little story. No one has posted anything ‘off color’, but rather they have each listed their own words of wisdom. From time to time, I’ll go in and add two words to keep us going.
The amazing thing about this is the number of people who are posting their ‘two words worth’. There are new friends, folks I don’t really know at all, and dear old friends. When I see an old friend who I’ve not had contact with in over a year, I’ve got to tell you, my heart smiles.
Life and the paths we are on keep us from staying in touch with our friends on a regular basis, so seeing their profile pics and posts into the thread just made me think how epic this could be to incorporate this into a real story – one that I could put into print, with pictures of the happy couple and present it to them on their wedding day, from me and about 100+ of my Facebook friends!
I’ll keep you posted and will definitely post a picture of my finished product. I just need to come up with a title. Maybe some of you can take this idea and run with it….

I’ve featured a couple of authors on this blog who have done “What If?” posts on their books. It occurred to me that I’d be remiss if I didn’t do one on the Coyote Series, so here goes! This is from Maria’s point of view – one of the main protagonists in all three books in the series: Blue Coyote Motel, Coyote in Provence, and Cornered Coyote.

The Lost Art of Cursive Writing…..A Thing of the Past? SAY IT AIN’T SO!
Can you believe that cursive writing is no longer being taught in our schools? That truly saddens me. I mean REALLY saddens me.
I recently asked the granddaughter of a co-worker if she could write her name in long hand (she’s 10) She looked at me puzzzled and replied,
“You mean cursive? No, they don’t teach that.”
How in the world can something as unique as a signature become obsolete? How are legislative bills going to be signed into being? Printed name??? GAWWWW! This scares the hell out of me!
What if everyone’s printing looks alike?
Future generations will miss the beauty of a signature. It’s something that belongs to you…your signature becomes your identity. So love letters (which I suppose are also a thing of the past) will be printed? How totally unromantic and absurd!
And how in the world do you sign a check? They stipulation “Signature Required” has no validity; unless of course we all resort to the ever present God of technology, ‘electronic signature’
And how will celebrities and sports legends sign autographs and sports memorabilia???? By printing their names?????? YIKES! #scary and #sad
Call me old fashioned, but I’m just dumbfounded and my heart is heavy as I realize that the Boomers and GenX are probably the last of the mohicans who have learned the art of cursive writing….
If you were to get a ‘signed’ book from an author, which would you prefer???
