There’s a pressure to always be positive, to always be seen as happy, as excited in this life. Truth is, I oscillate and I feel no shame in this. Life is beautiful but it’s also tough sometimes, it’s entirely acceptable to feel the whole width of this. Happiness and sadness carry equal value and I think we’d be better off if we started treating it that way.

.

Not always happy,

nor filled with melancholy.

I will oscillate.

I’m gonna tell you a truth, and it ain’t a pretty one, but it’s true nevertheless: Staying is hard. Life challenges us every day, and every day we wake as slightly new people, so sticking with someone else through all that is tough, it’s counter to all we know when we think to run. Still, it’s worth it. It’s so god damn worth it. My advice: be someone worth staying for. That’s all.

.

Spin around to me

and look up into my eyes.

I am here to stay.

Winter decimates all in its path in Montana, leaves you scrambling and blowing your own heat into your own hands. I am not made for Winter, I am for Autumn.

I get buried sometimes, inside myself and I scream from the bottom of that well and just hope someone hears. Somedays I am strong enough to scale the walls and make my way out, somedays I fall back and go beneath the water. Still I shout.

.

Lost and shouting out,

buried deep inside myself.

Brush away the dirt.

If I am honest, if I am truthful with myself, I understand I have so much work to do in order to become the person I believe I was born to be. I can be more, and so I will start trying harder today. This is Typewriter Series #3066 seed line. I’m posting the full poems and extras on my newsletter, and the link is in the bio tree. Please, come sign up. Hang out. Join us.

I’m to be gentle and curious,

patient despite reasons

to be hasty, I’m to be calm

in the face of panic.

I’m to be kindness, a wave

of compassion that consumes

and soaks all in its path.

I’m to taste of tenderness

to make this life a poem

written in footsteps and hands

held out for the holding,

I’m to be new, or unearth

the old like excavation and

hold it to the sun as dust

falls from it like incense smoke

and discovery.

Life is so incredibly loud when you have Autism, it’s noisy and it’s overwhelming and it’s so often too much. Finding a shelter from it changes all things, it brings you peace when you think there is none.

.

Shelter me from it,

the thundering of my life.

Be stillness in strife.
