you broken bastards, you forlorn lovers,
you who sail seas on ships that you know
will sink, you who wait for midnight
to finally stop squinting, you who
give until empty, and then scream out
that there’s still more for the taking,
for all those that know only taking.  
Listen you, you fractured lot, you who wish
for disease, for a distracted bus driver on a
busy street, you who want to give up
but don’t know the ways to, you who
do, but stay anyway, Listen, hear me
and believe.  
Lean in, trust me, you soul sick and
worn out wanderers, you shivering
birds, wings quiet for too long, looking for
love and hands to hold you and
something beyond this single serving
sex as a transaction society,
open your ears to me, hear this whisper
and repeat it like a scream

Something bigger than this
is waiting for you
to find it.

If all rivers begin somewhere, some high point
above the tree line, then yours, too,
have an origin.  
Start at the ocean, the uncrossable
body that your saltwater has filled,
every drop from every moment
between that far off then and this
now, and trace it back.  
Go under the bridges I built over
the rivers, step on the stones
in the streams before them,
find the source, high above
where even fog cannot reach.
Listen to the sound as it makes
its way to the sea, back to
me.  

So much sorrow, but gravity
and time
can make it sing.
