Today's (Wedding)Stationery Addict is...

The High-Street Bride’s Guide. I’ve written about dresses, bridesmaids and cake toppers for Brides and You & Your Wedding, and regularly contribute to the likes of GLAMOUR and Love Baking – often while eating cake in my pyjamas. I live with my husband in a chaotically untidy flat in Letchworth, which I pretend is an artfully
unkempt writer’s loft in St. Albans.
BLURB: Brides-to-be, this one’s for you!
You can say your vows in a catwalk gown so beautiful it reduces your mum to tears (and not because she paid for it).
You can style a reception so stunning your
guests won’t believe you didn’t hire an A-list
planner.
And you can sprinkle the day with personal
touches that make everyone feel like you gave them special attention before they even got there. Without spending a house deposit on it.
Honest.
Samantha Birch has written for GLAMOUR, Brides, You & Your Wedding and Cosmopolitan
Bride. She knows a thing or two about planning a wedding on a budget, how much you can expect to pay for everything and where to go to get it for less. And she’s put it all down here. I love stationery: Samantha Birch I knew I had a problem when my best friend bought me something I never knew existed for my nineteenth birthday: a greetings card organiser. It’s a handy folder thing divided into monthly pockets where you put all the birthday
cards for people that you’ve bought way, way too far in advance. She smiled as she gave it to me and announced: “You’re the only person in the world I think would use this!”
She’s right. Because yes, I have too many notebooks to ever get any use out of, and yes, one of the highlights of my Christmas every year is picking out the co-ordinating wrap and ribbon (or twine—maybe twine this year?), but it’s got to be said I’ve also got a bit of an obsession with finding the right birthday card. I’ve been known to spot the perfect one for somebody months
before their big day, and keep it squirreled away until the time comes.
Writing the Stationery chapter of The High-Street Bride’s Guide only made it worse—I was researching places to get your invites, place names, menus, table numbers and orders of service, and finding that most of them also did some totally gorgeous birthday cards. Here are some budget beauties from the book, and some that aren’t so purse-friendly for your wedding
but might just work on a one-card-at-a-time basis…
Hello! Lucky:
http://www.hellolucky.co.uk/zombie-birthday-hl-934.html Seriously, I’m going to have to start shielding my eyes until I’ve clicked through to where I need to be on this website—I’m always getting sidetracked by beautiful cards and charts and printables I have no use for at all. I mean really, I just got married last November, I have no use for a potty-training chart, but the damn thing was just too cute!
I recently bought a birthday card here for my husband because it was not only bright, quirky and retro, it said ‘Live it up!’ and was—get
this—covered in zombies. I mean, how could I not? W-day potential: Come here if you’re planning a small do, or if you’re looking for freebie printables.
Dicky Bow http://www.dickybow.co.uk/collections/all/products/owl-card
Dicky Bow’s capsule collection of cards and prints swings from modern-vintage—retro-look rockets, anyone?—to in-your-face bright and cheerful. I defy you to look at that big-eyed geometric owl and not smile. And I just need
to think up an excuse to buy the hotdog. Anything! W-day potential: Unless you’re going for something really off-the-wall, this place won’t fly for your nuptials, but it’s hard to beat for random ‘thinking of you’ cards that won’t get quickly forgotten.
North Divide Cards I’m a writer so—shock, horror!—I love a good bit of typography, and wotmalike.co.uk have got it by the bucket-load. Their cards are smothered in delicious slang that you’ll be desperate to say out loud as you read it—browse out of earshot of your significant other if you ever want to live it down…
W-day potential: Invite-able picks are few and far between, unless you’re really excited that you’re getting wed in Newcastle or Manchester—then you could send out the awesome Geordie City or City Scape Manchester cards!
Paperless Post I’ll be honest, I’m still working these guys out—not sure how this Free, 1 coin, 2 coins, 3 coins business works—but they look great if you want to ping something pretty over to a friend abroad, you forgot to send a card and need something online last-minute or you just feel like saving a few trees (not that they don’t do a paper option). They’ve got designs by kate spade new york, Oscar de la Renta and Virginia Johnson, so you can’t really go wrong, but personally I’m currently drooling over their cute illustrated macarons.
W-day potential: There are some super-pretty designs, even among their free options, so they’re great for save-the-dates. Also worth thinking about if you want to go green for your
big day.

My Wedding Invites No, really—that’s not a place. This is the result of all my hours trawling gift shops, Pinterest, websites and wedding magazines for graphical inspiration: mine and my husband’s wedding invitations!
I wrote the words (just try and stop me!), he did the visuals and we had them printed locally—we loved them so much we let them set the colour
scheme for the whole day. And the barrage of ROFL texts we got as these babies landed on people’s doormats? So. Totally. Worth it.

Meet Today's Stationery Addict...

And let’s face it, some stationary is just too beautiful to write in, like the first notebook I’m going to share with you. I touch this, I stroke it, I take pictures of it next to my cherub boys, but the pages remain empty. It’s from my cherub period, and I’ll always love it, and I hope you do too.

We all know it’s vitally important to have a notebook which suits the mood, so I was really pleased a few years ago when I came across some fuscia pink ones, which were a perfect match for my M&B aspirations back in the day. It sounds silly unless you’ve done it, but writing romance is SO much easier when you have pretty notebooks. So I bought a stack, but I soon went through them, and one day as an emergency measure I bought a black one, but it just didn’t look right...
Which is where we come onto my next, closely related obsession, which is for buying wrapping paper. I have drawers full of the stuff, and the prettiest of all gets put in frames. When I go shopping at Christmas I invariably come home with paper not gifts. When the local posh card shop started to stock Cath Kidson wrapping paper, I never went in without treating myself,
but lets face it, some paper is just too pretty to use for wrapping presents...
But it was perfect for covering dreary notebooks! So perfect that I had to buy dreary notebooks in all shapes and sizes just so I could cover them.

And they make fab presents too, which goes some way to solving the problem of not having any gifts to wrap.
Thanks so much for letting me come and chat Eve! I’ve had a fab time!

Linfoot Published by Harper Impulse
BIO: Jane Linfoot Author
I’m Jane Linfoot, and I write fun, flirty fiction, with feisty heroines and a bit of an edge.
I live in a mountain kingdom in Derbyshire, England, where my family and pets are kind enough to ignore the domestic chaos – happily, we’re in walking distance of a supermarket. For me, writing romance is cool because I get to wear pretty shoes instead of wellies. I love hearts, flowers, happy endings, all things vintage, most things french. When I’m not on facebook, and can’t find an excuse for shopping, I’ll be walking, or gardening. On days when I want to be really scared, I ride a tandem.
BLURB: The Right Side Of Mr Wrong
One-off, moving on sex wasn’t meant to be this hot…
When determined singleton Shea Summers is persuaded to become the “wife” of the Lord of Edgerton Manor, the last thing she wants to do is play house with a stranger.
Brooding playboy Brando Marshall, is far from happy when Shea turns up at his sprawling estate with production crew in tow. Surely she’s just another woman after his wallet? And if she’s
looking for Mr Right, she’s definitely hitting on the wrong guy. Then again, after catching an unscheduled glimpse of her knickers, perhaps Brando needs to teach this “gold-digger” a lesson!
She’s seizing the moment, he’s breaking the
rules, and when bad boys can be so much fun, who can resist getting on the right side of Mr. Wrong...

My Writing Process
Many thanks to
Virginia Kelly
, who invited me on this blog hop. And now for a little about my writing process.
What am I working on?
I’m writing a Romantic Suspense for Entangled Publishing that will be due out later this year. It’s book two of a continuity that I’ve set up with two other authors. The series starts off at The Great Exhibition of London 1851 and centres around the company Steel Hawk—who are asked to bring their secure locking device so that famous diamond - The Pasha Star of Zarrenburg, can be safely exhibited.
What happens at the exhibition sends ripples through Steel Hawk and the Royal family of Zarrenburg—entwining their destinies forever.
My book is set in present day, in a world of high-tech security, a royal coronation, a missing diamond and a man who threatens to destroy Steel Hawk’s reputation. It features alpha-geek Head of Research and Development for Steel Hawk, Adam Steel, and his reformed-rebel personal assistant, Honeysuckle Hawk.
There’s a tremendous amount of plotting involved across the three books but writing Adam and Honeysuckle’s story is delicious fun.
I’ve also just turned in book two for HarperImpulse – working title: The Love List. This contemporary romance is the second in a series of three and focuses on the story of Nora King (sister of Jared King – the hero of Her Best Laid Plans, which came out last week!).
How does my work differ from others in its
genre?
With my romantic suspense I love writing some of the story from the villain’s POV. It’s very important to write believable characters—not
everyone is one hundred per cent evil! Or if they are for the purposes of fiction, then any “bwahahaha” needs to be balanced by relatable flaws and multiple layers to their character.
With my contemporary romance I use a little more humour and get to focus completely on the relationship between the H/H.
Why do I write what I do?
It makes me happy. I love storytelling, and, in a world where it’s far too easy to settle back, opt out, and be cynical, I like to feel that reading romance can redress the balance a little. And because people sometimes struggle when the
world does turn serious, I like feeling I might be able to offer some entertainment and escape.
How does my writing process work?
I think I’m part plotter, part pantser! I’m definitely learning that some books I have to plan to the nth degree and some seem to simply unfold.
I always start out with a scene which pops into my head and just refuses to let go so that I end up mulling over “what if” scenarios as the
characters start telling me things about themselves. I tend to write a loose outline because I like to leave myself a little wiggle-room for the plot to breathe and take unexpected turns.
Next comes the choosing of the notebook! Finding the right one is a ritual that requires considerable thought and…a lovely shopping trip. The notebook must be both beautiful and practical and contain four sections for:
Characterisation, Research, Plotting Journal and Edits.
I take this notebook everywhere with me when I’m writing the book and by the time I press “send” on the manuscript, it has about three different colours of ink in it, neat writing,
illegible writing and post-it notes stuck in it and to it which never seem to mean a thing to me when I get around to reading them!
I use my plotting journal section to write the number of words I’ve written that day, a VERY loose plan for what I want to write the next day
and any light-bulb moments that come to me that feed into the main characters’ motivation. Yes – I really do use an actual “lightbulb” symbol!
The plotting CHART makes an appearance when I’m about a third of the way through the first draft and all the different threads are starting to come together and I want to make sure I don’t leave any loose ends.
At the end of it all—somehow – through much pondering, problem-solving, writing, charting, spreadsheeting, procrastinating, angsting and yet more writing, my book is born!
And now I’m going to let you in on who I’ve tagged to share their Writing Process with you all next week….
It’s the uber talented author Charlotte Phillips
Charlotte Phillips writes funny, sassy, sexy stories for Harlequin KISS/Mills & Boon ModernTempted, and HarperImpulse. She is also mum to three kids and a mad dachshund and terrible housewife to a heroic husband who doesn't notice he is living in a hovel. She lives in Wiltshire, England.

Her Best Laid Plans - part 3

She should ignore it. Concentrate on “The Plan” instead and fill out a few more job applications.
Still. He was a friend in need …
Sending a quick response, she hailed a cab. Destination: The Thai Lounge. Jared’s preferred venue for dealing with “Code Reds”. Not that there were many. Mostly women knew the score and enjoyed their time with him for what it was: a
mutually enjoyable interlude. It was only occasionally a woman morphed into full-on Limpet mode.
That was where she came in. An arranged ‘chance meeting’ between her and Jared with some subtle flirting was usually enough to leave the impression that he had effectively moved on.
Leaning back against the cab’s fading leather, Amanda admitted to a tiny, miniscule really, loss of perspective where Jared and their sporadic
role-playing Limpet-dispensing exercises was concerned. Because for all that was up-front, solid, responsible, and in- control about Jared— there was, lurking just beneath the surface, a hint of danger and a dark sensuousness that any
woman would be inclined to want to try and entice out to play. Add in the six-feet-two, exquisitely muscled, chiselled cheek-boned, full-lipped, green-eyed, raven-haired wrapping and well …
Amanda squirmed. Darn it, was she going to have to get out “The Plan” again?
She chewed on her bottom lip. Maybe these days the camaraderie between them had been replaced with something far less easy to label— he still needed her help didn’t he?

DIY - Organise!

Guess that’s nothing new. A writer who loves stationery. Big whoop. That’s like announcing cops like donuts or judges like early tee times.
It’s not exactly breaking news.
But that doesn’t make it any less true. I love post-its and note cards. Legal pads and note pads. Spiral notebooks and journals. If it has paper and it’s bound, I’m all over it.
Recently, with the release and promotion of my debut novel, The Tycoon’s Socialite Bride, and trying to keep up with my family, I realized I needed better help with organization. My digital organizers weren’t cutting it; I needed my old friends pen and paper. I went on Amazon and looked at the daily planners, but they were all so… plain. I was reading reviews on one
planner and I saw “DIY.”
Was it possible?
I could make my own daily planner?!
Heart pounding, I typed “DIY daily planner” into Google and smiled in bliss at the list of blogs and articles that appeared on my screen. I do not exaggerate when I say I spent hours looking at the articles, reading reviews, weighing the pros and cons until I found exactly what I was looking for on the I Heart Organizing blog. It was perfect. It was colorful, inclusive, organized… and expensive. Between the binder and accessories and the custom print out pages, it was going to cost more than a regular daily planner. But
like I am with my purses (Have I mentioned my purse addiction? No. Okay, good.) when the right one calls to me, price isn’t an object.

A big hug and thank you to Eve, for hosting me today.

entree into their exclusive world. When D.C. socialite Pamela Harrington comes to him for help, Marcus realizes the golden admission ticket he’s been seeking has suddenly fallen into his lap.
Pamela will do anything to save her favorite
cause, even agree to a marriage of convenience. The altruistic “it-girl” isn’t worried about the pretend passion with Marcus turning real; she’s sworn off powerful, driven men who use her for her family’s connections.
So she’ll deny the way her pulse races with one look from his crystalline blue eyes. And he’ll ignore the way his body throbs with each kiss from her full lips. Because there’s no way he’ll lose his blue-collar heart to the blue-blooded beauty.

Excerpt Part Two
Her Best Laid Plans - part 2 Stepping from the stream of traffic, she rooted around in her bag for her phone. Dragging it to the surface, she clicked on the memo function to bring up “The Plan”. She’d written it six weeks ago at brand-spanking-ly-New-Year’s-Day
o’clock, boosted by several large cocktails in celebration of her brother’s new job with a firm of lawyers. That Mikey had challenged the hand he’d been dealt, and secured himself a fulfilling future had filled her with pride. But celebrating Mikey’s success as they welcomed in the New Year with all of their friends, it had suddenly dawned on her that if she didn’t make some changes to her own life, she was going to be left behind. While everyone had started counting down the seconds, she’d started thinking.
Mikey had already spent his late teenage years practically raising her. On the cusp of starting his new life, there was no way she wanted to be responsible for holding him back. With alcohol making her brave she’d whipped out her phone
and set about typing a three point plan.
1) Get a better, more challenging job that could turn into a career.
2) Move out into own place.
3) Do something with your photography.
The next day, faced with a familiar fear of change, she’d gone to delete her fledgling plan, only to thankfully remember that Mikey didn’t deserve to start worrying his sister was in danger of turning into a bit of a flake.
So, okay, she was a novice at changing the course of her life. And maybe the plan read a bit like a list. But for Amanda it was more of a resolution anyway. A New Year’s resolution to participate in her own life story. Scary as that
felt. Unsafe as that felt. Tempting fate as that felt. She had to try.
Now, scanning her eyes over the plan’s contents it was as she’d suspected. Nowhere on her new life plan did it say anything about Jared King.
Or acknowledging rushes of heat brought about by Jared King.
Her eyes flicked to the last entry: Do something with your photography. There was a reason it was at the bottom of the list, she conceded, noticing a text had come through whilst she’d been in the interview.
Pacing to keep warm she opened it and read: CODE RED. WHERE R U? J

Her Best Laid Plans
So I thought I'd post some of my first chapter on the blog and who knows - you may even find the answer to some blog hop questions contained herein ;) Her Best Laid Plans Amanda Gray slipped into the busy New York street, her hand quite unwilling to relinquish its death-grip on a medicinal macchiato. Breathing in its sweet reassuring aroma she pondered her next move. So much for her New Year’s resolution— she was seriously out of practice at this whole taking-control-of-your-own-destiny caper.
The plan had been to ace the job interview, not babble excessively or give the impression that she couldn’t organise her way out of a paper bag.
But big-time nerves, combined with rusty
interview skills had shaken her, rendering her embarrassingly ineffectual so that now some perfectly qualified and properly experienced personal assistant would get the position at the gallery instead of her.
Jostled from behind, she managed to save both her coffee and her natty new interview suit from an unfortunate coming together. Picking up her pace she fought valiantly against a case of
serious pedestrian envy— everyone appeared to know exactly where they were going. She knew where she needed to get to … a job that paid enough for her to move out of the house she shared with her brother Mikey. It was the least that he deserved after he’d worked so hard to win back his independence after the accident. Seeing his progress and his capacity to fearlessly embrace life again had forced Amanda to take a look at her own. So here she was. Absolutely, totally, one hundred per cent ready to kick-start her life again.
The fire-blanket of butterflies that settled in her stomach was amazingly effective at dousing any melancholy she felt over her interview. Her breath hitched. She was nearly used to the butterflies trumping any feelings of confidence in her ability to make changes in her life. But since coming up with “The Plan” she reminded herself life was now all about feeling the fear and doing it anyway.
Of course, she could always take the easy option and accept Jared’s job offer. Except she was fairly sure the question she needed to be asking herself was “why” her brother’s best friend had offered her a job. Things between them were— she quaffed back a healthy dose of macchiato to eliminate the lick of heat she felt
rush to her cheeks —weird enough as it was. Or not, she hastily corrected. There wasn’t any one thing about her and Jared King that needed to be complicated. Eve
The plan had been to ace the job interview, not babble excessively or give the impression that she couldn’t organise her way out of a paper bag.

serious pedestrian envy— everyone appeared to know exactly where they were going. She knew where she needed to get to … a job that paid enough for her to move out of the house she shared with her brother Mikey.
