It’s BC Veggie Day!!

This is a guest blog post by my wife Anne Shetty who visited the green house growers at Real Canadian Super Store on Grandview Highway, Vancouver last Saturday, May 23, 2015.  In this blogpost, Anne writes about the BC Veggie Day Campaign which educates the public about green house crops grown in BC. Last November, I had the opportunity to go to the Chicken Squad campaign and was educated about our BC chickens.  It was very informative and most of all, brought me “peace” that what I eat is actually good. You can read more about that campaign I posted here.  So, when I heard Ricky that there is a BC Veggie Day campaign he’d like for me to come and see.. I did not have any second thoughts! I definitely want to come! I wanted to meet the growers and ask them so many questions and so I did.  Just so you know, I am very conscious of what I buy.  As much as possible, I try to feed our family with what is “natural” and less of the “processed”, and most especially, locally grown fruits and veggies. We are very lucky to be living in a city where this culture is fostered. You may be wondering what questions I asked.  I’m pretty sure you will ask the same questions.. so here they are! I had quite a chat with one of the growers from Windset Farms in Delta, BC. Are they Non-GMO? YES they are Non-GMO!!! All crops produced by the BC Green House Grower’s Association are Non-GMO. Hooray! I had a follow up question to this.. I asked if it is a regulation of the association to use only Non-GMO crops and it is! You may be wondering if all green houses have to be part of the association.. they have to! So.. that goes to say that crops from BC Green houses are all non-GMO! That includes our tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and lettuce. What about Pesticides? B.C. green house growers are world leaders in Integrated Pest Management? Growers protect the plants from insect pests and diseases by introducing predatory insects to the greenhouses. Their reliance on using biological controls allows them to use little to no pesticides. That means they introduce certain ‘good bugs’ into their greenhouses that are natural predators of bugs that might damage our plants. Nice! Another Hooray! How can we find BC Greenhouse Growers at grocery stores? Easy! Just look at these brands. […]

The Cloverdale Rodeo Rocks

Daddy Blogger was doing the Daddy thing last week for his amazing daughter’s birthday. Since he was once again invited to attend this amazing Rodeo event, I will share my adventures on behalf of him with all of you- enjoy! —– A Great Experience at the Cloverdale Rodeo. There is so much to do in Vancouver and all over BC, and the experience of being at the Cloverdale Rodeo this past weekend was right at the top of the list when it comes to having fun and enjoying something new! If you have never been to a Rodeo, this adventure comes highly recommended. Not only did I have the awesome experience of capturing some great images up close and personal, but I also had the privilege of meeting some of the competitors and learning about their passion for the sport. 20 years ago, I had my one and only experience at a Rodeo when my friends and I met at the Calgary Stampede. Because of this recent experience in Cloverdale, I was reminded that I still hold the record for falling off the mechanical bull in less than 2 seconds. It was actually 1. 7 seconds, but I rounded off. I remember thinking then and there that I would never try this again! And here I was again 20 years later, but this time at the awesome Cloverdale Rodeo riding the very dangerous Bucking Rocking Horse. This time I stayed on for 3 minutes. This is a picture of me being extremely brave – very scary after the experience in Calgary, but a very proud moment indeed. Life is and always should be about Having Fun, Making Memories and Living Life to the Fullest, and that was exactly the experience I had with friends Justin and Jorge at the Cloverdale Rodeo. I am already excited about next year and bringing many good ole country lovin folks with me. In addition to all the standard Midway games and the awesome rides, the Rodeo event had something fun for everyone. Some of the many highlights included kissing a few baby goats in the Barn, the West Coast Art Show, the Pig Races, the non-stop country music entertainment, the world class skateboarders, the awesome Lumberjacks and my all time favourite – watching little kids get thrown off Sheep, and their parents yelling, “you can do this kid, make your momma proud!” This shot was captured […]

Grow Your Business With Twitter

How big is Twitter? Twitter has 550 million registered users, and 215 million active. In this episode, Katt Stearns shares with James Martell the highlights from her talk at the February 2015 Social Media Mastery Conference, held in Vancouver, BC. Katt’s entrepreneurial journey began when she was in her early twenties. She was interested in working in the music industry, though she had no music background-just a passion for music. She sat down one day and wrote over one hundred emails to every radio station, recording artist and record label she could find, hoping to just volunteer. She received a response from 306 Records in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, an independent record label affiliated with Universal Music. They offered her an internship. So, she packed up everything and the journey began. A few years later, Katt started her own marketing and artist development company building partnerships alongside many of the top organizations in the industry. It was here she realized the power of content and social media. Greater Vancouver Golf Academy

Hockey? Check! Basketball? Check! Baseball? Check! Football? Check! I’ve played and watched all the major sports. In high school, I was on the Basketball Team for 2 years and in University, we won the Varsity Championships in Floor Hockey (I even have the medal to prove it! And, yes, I scored the game winning goal! It was one of my highlights from my time at UBC). However, since graduating from University, getting married, and having kids, I haven’t been actively playing sports. Sounds familiar? Yes, more and more dads are taking the Homer Simpson Couch Potato route rather than the Michael Jordan Just Do It way! So, when I got invited to bring a group of YVR Bloggers to the Anthony Pak Golf Academy in Port Moody, I was slightly cautious. I hadn’t really golfed before. Yes, I’ve done Mini Golf at the PNE and Pitch & Putt once, but I really don’t know how to even hold or swing a Golf Club properly. Those are all fears, all doubts, all insecurities. However, in life, you can choose fear or courage. This time, I chose courage and said “Yes!” to the invitation by my good friend Rahim Gulam, the owner and operator of the Great Vancouver Golf Academy. To tell you the truth, it was easier than I thought. When I arrived, I realized everyone had the same fears as me. Almost everyone was a total newbie. I was not alone…I was in the company of my fellow rookie golfers. After meeting Anthony Pak, the owner of the school, we had some delicious snacks and introduced ourselves and our blogs. Then, it was time to golf! Rahim took us through all the basics: from holding a club, to proper posture, to swinging, and Rahim even came around and made sure we each got 1-on-1 private time with him. Soon, the adventure was over! Or was it? Actually, it’s just the beginning since we will be taking our YVR Bloggers on another fun adventure – next time to an outdoor 18 hole course! Do you think I can handle it? Why don’t you join me and find out!
