The Synopsis – Yes, it’s Actually Really Useful

So, in the writing world, there are planners and there are pantsers. The planners have detailed plot outlines, a series bible, character sheets filled to the brim. Pantsers just write and find the beauty in the messy process of writing without a guide.

Honestly, both are good methods of writing, though of course it depends on your personality. For me, I’m a planner for the most part, but if I nail down too many details before actually sitting down to write, it does take some of the fun and jo...

With Great Power…and so on: YA Authors, Power and Privilege

First of all, I want to say thank you so much for all the congrats over the new book deal! WEEE!

Things are moving along much more swiftly, and I’m already starting to put the pieces together for the rest of the series. Of course, I’m going to have to juggle the creative side of things with the academic side of things as I’m also attempting to finish writing this last chapter of my thesis, but being a PhD student, you get used to juggling multiple tasks at once.

So, while I’ve been squeeing o...

Final Fantasy VII Remake – Is This Really The Right Choice for Square Enix?

So, today we just got word that Final Fantasy VII is going to be remade for the PS4 first. Look at the trailer!

Okay, so of course everyone went nuts when it was announced, myself included. Then, I took a deep breath and started to think about it. And when I did I started to really wonder. Is this a good thing? Here are some things that make me pause.

1) Square Enix Bought a Condo in Development Hell

And they haven’t moved in ten years. You all remember that Final Fantasy Versus 13 was an...

What About Your Trends? Will They Stand Their Ground? Will They Let You Down? (yeaaaah)

Hey how have you been? :D Don’t tell me you didn’t get that TLC Reference?

Unfortunately, being a PhD English student and Writer sometimes means you’re away in your cave writing and doing a bunch of work. Dissertation writing, article writing, journal editing, and of course reading, researching and finding time to work on your creative stuff. Well, thankfully I’ve been getting a lot of writing done, on the academic and creative writing side. And actually getting some of my academic stuff acc...

Choosing Projects

Hi all!

giphy (4)

Sorry for the radio silence over here. I’ve been utterly drowning in academic busy work but I am pleased to report some set goals being met. I am particularly proud to have gotten through that stack of essays I had to mark over the course of three weeks.

Yes, three weeks.

Not only because I’m the only marking TA for an entire third year class, but because there was just no way I’d be able to feasibly get through marking dozens of essays at a time. It takes at least half an hour to ma...

Monday Wishlist: ZEROES by Margo Lanagan, Scott Westerfeld, and Deborah Biancotti

So excited to talk about this next book. I’m seriously starting to really wonder if the new burst of Marvel, DC (et al.) superheroes on the big screen is translating to more enthusiasm among readers and writers. I mean, we’re ALL salivating over that stuff, let’s be real. Well, here’s the next book coming down the YA pipe:

Zeroes-final-cover-450

Description, from Tor.com:

The Millennials at the center of Zeroes share an auspicious birthday, which has blessed each one with a superhuman ability that makes their individ...

Cover Reveal: The SEA is Ours: Tales of Steampunk Southeast Asia

Remember how I told you about how my awesome friends Jaymee Goh and Joyce Chng were editing an anthology of Southeast Asian steampunk? Well, here’s the cover, in it’s full beauty.

SEAsteampunkcover

Gorgeous artwork! Stirs the imagination for what a steampunk, sci-fi story placed in an Asian setting might look like. I can’t exaggerate how desperately diverse voices are needed in our literature landscape. This book is not only an opportunity for readers to consume non-Eurocentric sci-fi stories; it is also an opp...
