Some Theories on S4, S5, and Narrative Structure

tjlcisthenewsexy:

someabominablemeta:

So I haven’t been keeping up with Set!lock or fandom metas… I fucked off to my main fandom not too long after TAB. But I’ve recently become Sherlock obsessed again, and I’ve finally grasped a lot of narrative structure things (shameful for a writer, I know) so I thought I’d make a predictions essay based on narrative structure.

So of course, in basic plot structure you have:

1. Hook
2. 1st Plot Turn
3. Pinch Point 1
4. Midpoint
5. Pinch Point 2
6. 3rd Plot Turn
7. Climax
8. Denoument

(7 and 8 are sometimes broken down into Black Moment | Climax | Denoument {the wrap up})

I’m working off the assumptions that they’ve got a five series arc planned, and also that M-Theory is real. (And Johnlock of course, duh.)

So this puts things something like this:

ASiP - The Hook + Inciting Incident.
TBB
TGG - First plot point.

ASiB
THoB
TRF - First pinch point.

TEH
TSOT - Midpoint Reversal.
HLV

TAB - 2nd Pinch.

???1 - 2nd Pinch.
???2
???3 - 3rd Plot Point

???1
???2 - Black Moment into Climax.
???3 - Climax into Resolution.

The Hook + Inciting Incident. John and Sherlock meet, the introduction to the series and it’s themes.

First plot point. And by that I mean the real introduction to Moriarity and his evil plots that continue through the entire series.

First pinch point. Pinch points are kind of difficult for me to define even now, but basically, they are there to remind you of what’s at stake. They give a character an opportunity to show what his core is, and often they give him the means to make a choice that will define him and his arc. You can also use pinch points as a reminder of the nature of the bad guy. Anyway, TRF does both. Sherlock is directly reminded of how ruthless and crazy Moriarity is while affirming that Sherlock, indeed, has a heart - and that specifically that John is very important to him. But in this stage, Sherlock is also still not comfortable communicating and still doesn’t recognize all of his emotions for what they are.

Midpoint Reversal. TSOT is smack dab in what many presume to be the entire series, and you can’t get a better midpoint reversal in a romance arc than the hero marrying someone else. Midpoint Reversal means that the circumstances of the story reverse - in this case, things have been looking well for John and Sherlock throughout the series, even in TEH really, but then you have Mary knocking everything askew.

2nd Pinch. I’ve listed the 2nd Pinch here because TAB was *huge* in moving along Sherlock’s arc and showing who he really is.

But I do think it’s possible that the pinch will carry over into the beginning of the first episode of S4, possibly with a love declaration of some sort, and of course, some Moriarity event.

3rd Plot Point - At the third plot point, you reveal your final piece of information. I mean, case fic is one thing for the rest of the show, but this would be the moment you reveal your final “omg” fact that you need to get you to the climax and beyond. In this case, since I ascribe to M-Theory, I think that this is when it will be revealed that Mycroft has been caught in Moriarity’s web. I also believe that Moriarity is coming back (but we’ll probably get a glimpse of him before this). It’s either Moriarity, or it’ll be a double whammy and if there’s someone behind Moriarity, that’ll come out here. I have other reasons for believing it’s Moriarity, but for the purposes of this post, it’s because you don’t change main villains in the middle of a story! It could be that Mycroft dies here, as well, possibly in a redemption arc.

Black Moment into Climax. If we haven’t visited The Three Garridebs in S4, then I think they’ll be saving it for the Black Moment, and then propelling that into the Climax of the series. If Mycroft is going to die and doesn’t die in S4, then I think the Black Moment will also include Mycroft’s death after some sort of redemption arc. Note that I don’t think that Mycroft *needs* a redemption arc in terms of he’s not actually a villain - but I believe that Mycroft would believe he needs one.

Climax into Resolution - This is pretty self explanatory, but I just wanted to mention that I think we’ll get some sort of ending with John and Sherlock in the country with the bees, romance firmly established.

This is awesome. About that midpoint reversal; I love that we get Sherlock’s romantic revelation of dropping the champagne glass one moment, then he literally says “Part Two” as he jumps over the table (crossing a threshold), telling us that we’re entering part two of our story. This moment is also in the middle (ish) of the episode (about the two thirds mark, I think).

I’m curious about the second pinch point, because I think you’re bang on that it’s TAB, plus the beginning of S4, but does Mary shooting Sherlock count as a plot point? Or is it the start of the second pinch point? Because while it’s an injection of new information, it’s also a “what’s at stake” moment, where we see the consequences of the choices our characters have made. So do you think the entire second pinch point could be a “this is what’s at stake when you don’t choose wisely”? And you said it could involve a love declaration, so could that be about John and Sherlock both choosing each other over their facades? Like… Sherlock tosses the deerstalker as a symbol of throwing away his facade, and meanwhile John chooses Sherlock over Mary (during the missing months perhaps)? All during the timeline of the missing months+TAB+beginning of S4? Because each of them choosing each other could certainly lead to a love declaration like you say, or even perhaps an unspoken committment which will then lead up to a declaration in Ep 2? (or 3).

I hope that makes sense. I love your analysis <3

Interesting to think about the structure. I’m a fan of the 3rd plot point being a big reveal about Moriarty – ie that it was Mary all along, from the very start (which would’t be a villain change, merely a new level of reveal about ‘Moriarty’, which TAB set up by suggesting that a villain can be a mantle, not just a person). But we shall see!

Episode 1 Setlock Recap

thesetison:

Hello, friends! Life has been crazy busy lately, but I’ve finally managed to finish recapping episode 1.

For these episode recaps, I’m going to operate under the assumption that everything filmed in a particular block is for that same episode unless we were specifically told otherwise. Therefore, this recap will cover all of the first block, plus the two locations where we know Rachel did some directing during the second block.

If you just want the bare essentials to remind you of what we know about episode 1, here’s a brief summary:

Siege at Portland House
John and Mary having a meal at Mint and Mustard
Ella is back
Three days at Coedarhydyglyn
Ferrari
The reported christening
Sherlock and Molly with the baby at the Watsons’ flat
Mycroft, Greg, Sherlock, and a SOCO team on the scene on Cyncoed Road
Crime-solving adventures with the dog and the baby in tow
Sherlock all alone on Vauxhall Bridge
Unknown filming at the MI6 Building and the London Aquarium
Possible birth scene in a blue Audi, with some shark fin graffiti painted in the tunnel
Sherlock at the Senedd, where the government scenes in HLV were filmed
The rocky shore of Porthcawl
John rides the bus and meets a woman at a bus stop

If you want the more detailed recap, click to read below the cut, where I’ve summarized the filming by location (mostly chronologically), listed all of Arwel’s tweets, and included a few other things of note about the episode that didn’t quite fit elsewhere.

TJLC Explained

I had not watched any of these videos prior to yesterday. Main reason: 1) they are video and 2) the length. Audio stuff works for me because I can listen to it when I take my daily long walks. But I’m not a fan of watching long videos on my computer. Anywho, last night I finally watched the first one and liked it so I plugged my PC into our big TV and my husband and I watched 10 episodes in a row! He was all like ‘nah, don’t want to see it’, but came in while I was watching one and got engaged. (He’s watched all of Sherlock with me, but it’s just another show to him.) So yeah. The videos are AMAZING! I’ve been reading meta (and writing it) since S3 aired and it’s fantastic to have everything summarized so effortlessly in one place with the show footage and all that.

Rebecca, you held my hubs attention so you are a fandom God as far as I’m concerned. I bow down! I know those videos must be so much work to piece together with all the meta tracking down and incorporating the footage and all that. THANK YOU. Also you are bright and funny and just adorbs. You’re the perfect host!

I have to wonder how the existence of these videos changes the game? I mean, have the show’s creators seen them?  Are the secret codes becoming too well-known? It’s all so interesting. What a ride we’re on.

Is there one about Mary? Can’t wait to get to that one!

Moments before the epic scene that didn’t happen:...

ivyblossom:

Moments before the epic scene that didn’t happen: John comes back to Sherlock on his own Mary-encouraged steam. Not because Sherlock saved his life to pave the way for him to do so. Just because he wants to.

He always wanted to, really, but his pride and anger were (quite rightly) keeping him away. So now he’s going to swallow all that, because being near the object of his desire, his drug of choice, his core happiness, is just too attractive a proposition for him. He has to go.

With Sherlock dead and having no other real option, John did his best to continue on as half a man. But with Sherlock alive and well and back at 221b, no matter how angry, hurt and humiliated he is, John can’t resist the temptation to go to Sherlock and be whole again.

So here he is: collar popped, gloves on, moustache off. I bet he smells really good, too. He’s prepared himself for this return. John wouldn’t get this far without having prepared something to say. I wonder what it was.

God, this is so true! What I wouldn’t give to have this scene. What would John have said to Sherlock and how happy Sherlock would be just that John came.

since this is my first setlock where I'm on tumblr and active, when do we get more teasers, promo pics etc? also love how you take time to answer every question, you're honestly so kind

NONNY, YOU ARE IN FOR A SLOW SWEET DEATH.

Check out my TAB Starter Pack for an idea of the progress of promotional stuff that happened Pre TAB, just to get an idea.

And I just realized Sherlocked UK and London CC are the same weekend this year (23-25 September), so my predictions might be a bit skewed since right now, none of the Sherlock cast / crew are confirmed for LCC, understandably. For now, I’m gonna say everything will be revealed at Sherlocked. Since this is a series, I am anticipating the following:

Another couple official promo pics, showing a scene from S4E2 and S4E3 either before or during Sherlocked UK Promo photos for all three episodes will be released after or during Sherlocked, either all one lump or all together. Tough to say… does anyone recall if S3′s photos were all released together?
The official extended BBC 2:30 trailer released at Sherlocked, which will possibly recycle scenes from the teaser and add another few scenes for us to tear apart. Also released will be the episode titles at this Con. This MAY change, since S3′s titles were released randomly with promotional events. Either way, I think the titles will be released before October.30 second teasers will be released for BBC in-between-shows commercials for the full series, at random. OR they will shove a scene or two in their “2017 Drama” Trailer.Mid November to Mid December, we will FINALLY get the episode trailers, which will then reveal the episode dates. I predict the first three weekends in January, OR January 1, 8, and 16 (all Sundays).PBS will then announce their release dates as well, which I suspect they will try to air them on the same days or a week later. Sherlock is also popular for PBS, so they will probably try to make space in their schedule for it to air on the same days. There’s nothing on their site yet about the schedule, but hopefully we will get it on the same day.

That’s the flow I think will happen :)

It is not 1895 anymore

the-7-percent-solution:

If you need to make a concise, quick argument to someone regarding the probability of Johnlock becoming canon contrary to the original books, tell them “The writers have told us over and over again, from the beginning, that it isn’t 1895 for these characters anymore”. LGBT people couldn’t be open then, therefore the original stories need to be allowed some room for movement and interpretation.

*Irene’s passcode was not “I AM 1895 LOCKED”, lending a clue to the idea that the writers have already been thinking of this as a possibility. Keep in mind Sherlock calls the line “I AM 1895 LOCKED” a hacked message - as if someone was trying to send him a message and communicate an idea. However, it’s not a message for him after all. It isn’t locked in 1895. But it is a message. For us, not him. It isn’t 1895 anymore.

*John’s blog is no different. It’s stuck on 1895 hits. Do you know what Sherlock says about it? “It’s faulty.” John’s blog being stuck on 1895 is wrong, broken. Eventually, it fixes itself, though, because it isn’t meant to be stuck on 1895.

*On a billboard behind John in the beginning of HLV, it says “information / is / the power to change” followed by the number “18.95”.

*The Abominable Bride takes place in 1895 but at the end we see history giving way to the modern day. Sherlock Holmes knows he’s a man out of his time. Sherlock even spends his last moments in 1895 talking to John about what a future world might look like and how they would fit inside it. Because it’s not actually 1895 anymore and they’re allowed to be a bit different in this future world.

It is not 1895 anymore. Sherlock is free to be who he is. This is the story they’ve been telling from the beginning.
