Woke up to several worried fans in my mail box due to the GQ quote from BC. So let me just remind you.

Benedict is an extroverted thinker, an undisciplined speaker, he is easily led by journalists as he likes to please people

Journalists twist quotes to suit the piece they are writing
An actor’s PR team have an agenda; look busy, in demand, inundated with scripts. The more in demand the higher the pay check. Ben knows this
Benedict also has Sunnymarch to consider. He wants them to look thriving and viable to clients for investment

Let’s look at the quote:

It might be the end of an era. It feels like the end of an era, to be honest. It goes to a place where it will be pretty hard to follow on immediately.

To me this reads as if he is addressing the johnlock arc. The end of the era of uncertainty. Which is a glorious thing. It’s what we all want. We have no idea of the tone used or the facial expressions when he said this statement. What if that last sentence was spoken in teasing fashion with the emphasis on ‘hard’ and ‘immediately’? As in; we leave John and Sherlock in bed, naked? Can’t follow on from there immediately unless we rate it as porn. Benedict loves innuendo, he does it all the time [at Sherlocked he did it about Sherlock’s closet] We were not in the room for the GQ interview, all we have is a flat printed statement. Yet our first impulse is to rush to worrying over the end of the show. A statement in print is no where near enough to know exactly what thought Benedict was communicating.

We never say never on the show. I’d love to revisit it, I’d love to keep revisiting it, I stand by that, but in the immediate future we all have things that we want to crack on with and we’ve made something very complete as it is, so I think we’ll just wait and see. The idea of never playing him again is really galling.

This is really rather lovely and reassuring. He’s saying exactly what they have all been saying for the past 6 years. Yes, it takes time to get a season on their agenda but we will be back. In the immediate future he has The Current Wars, the film about the War Magician, and other things we may not know about. Martin has a Ghosts, Funny Cow and various others lined up. [I love that Ben uses the ‘we’ in this statement] Plus the fact that he feels as if they are leaving us at end of season 4 with ‘something very complete’, is wonderful. It intimates to me that John and Sherlock are finally together and loved up. We KNOW Steven and Mark will be pitching Ben and Martin a series 5 concept as Steven told us that, and it will be fantastic, Freebatch will not turn it down.

At Sherlocked Con Benedict made a comment that to me was very revealing: He was asked if he would play Sherlock on stage as some previous Sherlock actors had done. He said no, he would never do that, but then said to the audience, ‘however just wait five years and I may be onstage as Sherlock going ‘Hello!’ It was a comment making reference to the unpredictability of an actor’s popularity. He knows this from his parents. In fact Wanda had addressed this issue in one of her talks that same weekend. She pointed out that fame and the height of fame never lasts and that Benedict, being no George Clooney, is after all a character actor and will age into interesting roles. They both realise that BBC Sherlock is a gift. It has ‘legs’ and will be a source of work for the future. Benedict knows the value of that, as does his best advisors; his parents.

So whether it is the press, the PR  agenda coming from the actor’s mouths, the fear of the crew and employees around the actors for their current jobs, or the journalists writing articles to get magazines sold, the truth is that the Sherlock team see this show as an ongoing concern, and Benedict in the GQ piece did not deny that, he reiterated it.

It is the end of an era - they pulled the rug, they put all the cards on the table, the secret is out. But obviously there will be more seasons. BC seemed clear about that. As long as they’re in a good place, a couple of years won’t be too long.

All of this ^^^^

All of this. Ben… tends to ramble a lot without thinking.

Ben has let it slip earlier in the year that the BBC commissioned a fifth season BEFORE they started filming S4.

Plus, Steven hints to a confirmed fifth season in this quote here and this article here.

Honestly, we need not worry. They’ve been hinting about S5 since S2. <3

More musing on ep 3:

tendergingergirl:

welovethebeekeeper:

Another possibility for the third title is a variation on The Gloria Scott. Why? Well several things are coalescing in BBC Sherlock into a mash up of The Boscombe Valley Mystery and The Adventure of the Gloria Scott. Remember the writers never stray too far from canon.

In both GLOR and BOSC the story is driven by GHOSTS from the past. Old acquaintances that reemerge from the past bringing trouble in their wake. Ghosts was the word to cover both TAB and series 4.

GLOR has the skip code in it, the one used by Mary in TEH. In GLOR a letter is sent in code that states ‘the game is up’. Somehow I think Mary will receive such a note in TST which leads to her disappearance and maybe reemergence in the third ep.
In GLOR we have initials used, J A, the letters turn out to be the real initials of the Mr Trevor whose name is really James Armitage. The characters in both GLOR and BOSC lend me to think of Mary’s real name: AGRA - Alice Gloria ? Armitage. A mash up with SIGN but plausible [I need that R, could it be Rachel?]
In GLOR a large ship blows up and the survivors take to a smaller boat. We saw boat action on setlock ep 3.
In GLOR a man turns up as an old sailor to ask Mr Trevor for a job. From setlock ep 3 we have suspicion that Sherlock disguises himself as an old fisherman.

As Mark and Steven love to mash up their canon stories it won’t be till post airing before we can delineate the canon stories used. But there are enough clues there to suggest Gloria Scott/Boscombe I believe.

Just to add a weird but pleasant thought: We know we are getting this guy, Tam Mutu

playing Leonard in ep 3. What if Victor Trevor has been renamed Victor Leonard Trevor in honour and tribute to Leonard Nimoy who played Holmes, and whose Spock is clearly a Holmes mirror. Just a thought.

Here’s another good Tam Mutu thread to go with this from @isitandwonder. It would

be cute if they did throw a tribute to

Nimoy. He loved Holmes, too.

Favourite Ben/Martin moments [2/2]

“I remember last year, when Sherlock was nominated for loads of Emmys, and Ben [Cumberbatch] and I were nominated too. I texted him: ‘I believe these are what’s called the good times.” - Martin

“He’s always doing kung fu on me. We’ll be standing around, and I won’t be paying any attention to him, and then he suddenly goes, ‘HYYYMMNNNN’ and his hand is right next to my windpipe.”   -
Benedict

When I was 16, I had a fake I.D. and decided to go to a gay bar by myself because some friends bailed on me. While there, an older gentleman bought me a drink. He wasn’t a creeper, and he definitely wasn’t unattractive. I accepted the drink and began talki
