“She?” “Obviously.” We were told all the way back in Series One. Are we finally ready to listen?
:
The groundwork for the ultimate Moriarty reveal has been laid since the very first episode of Sherlock, but instead of listening to what we’re being told, we’ve let assumptions and inferences and blind spots lead us astray. Just like Sherlock has, in fact. But it’s all there, the truth about Moriarty, if we just look at what’s been right in front of us the whole time.
For us, as well as Sherlock, it’s been a long trip getting here. Late is better than never, I suppose…
(Is it a meta? Is it a fic? Who knows? Not me, that’s for sure. More mental meanderings under the cut.)
I’m 100% with you on this! I too came away from TAB with the Mary=Moriarty conviction, but you spell it out in such a clear way here. Thank you! I hope you’re right about BAMF!John saving the day in the end. I so want to see him kick ass in S4!

What do you think of BBC three pretending to be a fanperson/shipper on twitter and tumblr? : Sherlock

pretending…??????????????????? -_-

I’ve been thinking about this for a while and this seems like the right opportunity to say it: Some day in the not too distant future, Three is going to be used as an example of Social Networking Done Right in marketing schools. And by that I don’t mean to imply that they’re pretending to be fans, I’m saying that BBC hired the absolutely right people for the job. They didn’t do what most other companies do: hire marketing people who try to interact with the customers/fans but ultimately have no real connection to them and don’t understand them.
Instead, they hired fans (disclaimer: I don’t know the people behind the Blob but I think we can all agree that they’re fans).
It sounds so simple and in those future marketing schools people are going to laugh when they here that it was so revolutionary to hire fans to interact with fans.
Those people on reddit seem to think that Three is some kind of impostor who pretends to be a shipper. Nothing is further from the truth. “Shipper in chief BBC Three“ is an accurate title.
I love Three. They’re sweet and funny and supremely excitable, like all of us on tumblr. How many official social media accounts of companies get people to make fan art and fics of their mascot without the incentive of a competition?
And you know what the best thing about this is? When others finally cotton on to this excellent strategy, so many of my tumblr friends are going to get jobs where they literally get paid to tumbl all day.
(Edit: also now that I read the entire discussion, there’s a lot more people on the pro-bbcthree and shipping side than the anti.)
this is beautiful
@bbcthree is fabulous at their job on here.
It is… similar (though not the same) as @dennys who 100% knows the target audience and gets right in there with the crowd they want.
It’s actually brilliant. And they are fantastic to interact with.

This entire thread brings up a tangential but still relevant question:
Why is the BBC engaging/encouraging/interacting with the “crazy” shippers?
It certainly implies a certain level of acknowledgment, which is fascinating considering most of the “casuals” that make up most of the viewership numbers wish we’d go far away.
It would be just as easy to have a social media presence dedicated to proclaiming “It’s just a detective show. Shippers are mental. Johnlock is a fantasy world and will never happen.”
It certainly reads like encouragement. Maybe even roundabout endorsement. But why?
Agree with all this. I love BBCThree! And yeah, I think it gives us hard core fans a feeling of ‘we’re not wrong’ or ‘they understand us behind the scenes’ that is encouraging and exciting and just helps grow the community.
I’ve not sure if Three really has any inside info. I think the dads are keeping the end game so close to the chest, even the crew doesn’t know. But still, Three is coming at it from a fan POV. (and johnlock!)

The reason we know this:
Is love,
And this:
Is friendship,
is because this:
Is a man with a woman,
And this:
Is a man with a man,
So it seems obvious that these people:
Are in a heartbreaking love triangle,
While these people:
Are all happy as hell.
Sometimes an audience confuses
Romance
with
Bromance
and although
Heartbreak
might look similar to
Sulking
or
Intimacy
similar to
friendly comfortableness,
They are actually
Very
Different
And it´s always easy
To tell
Them apart.
If you know how to
Spot
The signs.
The error is obvious really,
These stories have nothing in common.
Can you guess why?
Do you want me to spell it out for you?
The reason that these stories are completely different is
that this one:

gay subtext on a trajectory toward text is only to be acknowledged when one party is a cannibal
I am offended, BBC Sherlock is in the process of changing the world’s perception of Holmes and Watson, and a fan convention appears embarrassed to have even one panel focus on the central relationship in this global television show. The panel line up has diversified into non-Sherlock subject matter, and ignored the exciting, central, in show canon, subject of johnlock. In favour of Hannibal? The Hobbit? Hamilton? Not only am I offended, I am sad. It’s a move worthy of the homophobic, fraternal Sherlockian cabals of the past.
And this ageist shit:
Bringing Elder Sherlockians Into Today’s Fandom - Older Sherlockians are always discussing how to bring new fans into their existing clubs and rituals. But how do we help THEIR transition into all the new worlds of Sherlock Holmes fandom that have sprung into existence since Sherlock first aired?
As a 56 year old life long Sherlockian can I just say that I needed NO help in jumping into the ‘'new worlds of Sherlock Holmes fandoms that have sprung into existence’. I just became involved, as you know……I had an understanding of fandoms. Yes, my old brain knew enough about fandoms to figure it out. Fancy that. At my age!
This is a clusterfuck on every conceivable level, isn’t it?
What the hell will they do when johnlock becomes canon? I’m glad I had no plans to attend.

That means four, FOUR months of setlock!

Oh I’m so glad I have tumblr strangers to explain to me how I really feel about things.
(And then, after coming into my untagged post and throwing around accusations of “violent misogyny”–they blocked me. Hence the screen shot.)
This was a really disappointingly small serving of Discourse, considering. I’m still a bit dissatisfied, a bit peckish…
On this person’s blog:
I’m all for people who have problems with Mary and problems with John forgiving her. But bringing physical violence into the discussion is crossing a line. It’s not in the least bit cute, but it IS terrifying and triggering for a lot of people.
IMDB says, regarding BBC Sherlock:
A man is shot. We see close up of bloody wound. (S01E01)
One man tortures another, dying, man to get information. He stands on a bullet wound and we see his pain stricken face and hear his screams of pain. (S01E01)
Many scenes in a morgue. The main character handles dead bodies. At one point we see him beating a body with a riding crop (S01E01).
A serial killer kills people by forcing them to commit suicide. (S01E01)
Several characters are threatened with a large crossbow style machine (S01E02).
A man is shown falling down a flight of stairs and then dying (S01E02)
An elderly women has a bomb that is strapped to her detonated (S01E03)
Blood is seen covering a seat. It is later found out that this is frozen blood (S01E03)
A dead body is seen on the shore. It is found that he was killed a while ago by strangulation. (S01E03)
A man punches another man in the face (S02E01)
A plane is filled with dead bodies. (S02E01)
A man is shot in the head (S02E01)
Several wounds and grazes are seen as a result of gunshots, knife wounds, etc, some in detail.
Many dead bodies are seen throughout the entire series.
One of the main characters appears covered in blood on two occasions.
The second episode of the second season has the theme of all the main characters being under a hallucinogenic drug and whilst under the effect of the drug they see a very frightening dog with glowing red eyes. The dog growls and snarls before being shot dead.
The final episode of the second series is very upsetting. The villain threatens the main character by having assassins ready to kill his friends. He claims that only if the main character jumps of the building will the gunmen be called off. The villain commits suicide by firing a gun in his mouth and the main character subsequently jumps of the building. His best friend is watching the jump. The main character says goodbye to his friend over the phone and then jumps off to his death.
But … fans of the show shouldn’t bring physical violence into the discussion because it’s crossing a line? Are the same people who may be triggered by these discussions actually watching the show?
Just to point out–my dumb little headcanon was, in point of fact “John leveling his gun at Mary”, which is actually not in and of itself violence. There are a BUNCH of ways and reasons John would point a gun at Mary-as-villain that do not necessitate following through with violence.
As far as “violence is triggering”, I guess this line of thought crosses over into the space of “violence against women is always misogyny, no matter the context”, but in the universe of a VIOLENT SHOW about MURDER, doesn’t that stance in and of itself limit female agency? Like, isn’t that headed towards saying women are too fragile and redeemable and inherently…um, something…to be real villains, the kind of true life or death threat that needs to be fought by any means necessary?
And wow, that really doesn’t sit well with me, for a lot of reasons.
So in short, cwb…sheesh. I just don’t know where these folks are coming from, or what show they are watching.

The car ride at the end of Tab would have been so tense like at this point
-John knows that Mary is bad news, and he also knows that, for the moment, he has to stay with her.
-But there’s something else he is learning, has been learning for a long time
-And Sherlock’s drug addled ramblings only confirmed his suspicions (his tentative hopes, his most secret dream)
-“Why… Why don’t you just elope… I wouldn’t mind…”
-So they are driving, with John in the middle of the backseat, literally between Mary and Sherlock, and its agonising
-There’s only so much he can take
-So when Sherlock’s hand falls onto the leather of the scant seat space between them
-Slowly
-So slowly that it would seem to anyone else like this hand wasn’t moving at all
-He makes his way to touch Sherlock’s palm
-Tracing the lines and callouses so softly that Sherlock almost doesn’t look to see what is going on
-But when he does see he swallows hard and twitches his hand, which makes john freeze in his travels, but then Sherlock’s thumb is stroking along the back of his palm
- An unspoken reply of ‘yes, I have been waiting for this’
-So John links their fingers together and squeezes in a staccato rhythm and prays to god he understands
.. / .- – / … — / .. -. / .-.. — …- . / .– .. - …. / -.– — ..- / .- -. -.. / .. / …. .- …- . / -… . . -. / ..-. .-. — – / - …. . / … - .- .-. -
-And Sherlock’s eyes are watery red but he doesn’t look around, not while Mary could look and see this moment and destroy him
-So he simply squeezes back and holds on tight, wishing that he didn’t have to let go
-Mycroft watches in the rearview mirror and his heart breaks for them, because there is a plan and they would all need to stick to it or risk losing their lives
-But was there anything worth living for if they couldn’t have each other?
(The Morse code reads “I am so in love with you and I have been from the start”)

I love this for fun fandom stuff. But if this really happens on the show I’m going to set all the things on fire.
This is originally from March 2013…before Amanda was officially announced. Found this gem when going through the archives. We have always been such a clever fandom.
Wow, this is incredible!

Sometimes I think about Mark and Steven talking about Sherlock Holmes on the train from Wales like the two middle aged dorky fanboys they are, and then I wonder about the moment when, after being initially so afraid to broach the subject, one of them hesitantly confessed he’d always wanted to do an updated version where Sherlock and John are super queer and obviously falling in love–even as he’s saying it he half expects the other man to laugh or roll his eyes or be somehow condescending or dismissive but instead he’s like OH MY GOD ARE YOU SERIOUS? ME TOO!, and they both get so excited, talking loudly over each other, words tumbling out as they gesture and flail and giggle together, so happy that they share the exact same vision, and that’s where it started, all of it, and the thought of this makes me so happy
It’s like you were a fly on the wall.
