Amanda Abbington and Sue Vertue about Sherlock S4. (x)
![]()
okay, at first this screamed Johnlock! to me.
But on second thought… maybe it might also be related to the narrative structure? Is there anything that hasn’t been done in postmodern story telling?
Nope, it screams johnlock to me. Can’t think of anything else that would ‘make television history’. Plus, Sue’s like ‘shut the fuck up amanda, you’re giving it away!’

Solo Martin scene concept: much as I love and hope for the sad wanking with every fiber in my being (ta @weeesi) I’m still turning ideas over, trying to figure out why Martin wanted to do it without all of them there. tbh I remember from WTF he had an incredibly difficult time filming the drunken karaoke scene, and the only other uncomfortable scene I’ve heard him mention was trf grave scene. Got me thinking.
So best bet is an emotional scene right? It’s probably not wonky funny times if he’s a) so uncomfortable filming it and b)
all alone. Sherlock has been sobbing his way through three series now, but stoic John has only ever cracked at the grave (which we still weren’t allowed to watch) and a single tear at the speech. John’s going to lose and come close to losing a lot this season. The weight of everything causes Sherlock to turn to drugs, but John…well John’s always had a subtext with drinking.
So I’m thinking a Baker Street scene, finally finally in his room, John drinking and muttering and breaking down and really, openly crying. Throws the ramc mug at the wall? (Sherlock shoots at the wall, but then he is dramatic.) Going through the possessions that were left at Baker Street after the fall, or the ones he brought back that are finally home? A jumper, a cane? Maybe reading a blog post he never finished? Considering the gun one last time?
Admittedly, I *want* it to be something like this. Something dark and visceral and John Watson letting his demons out for a second instead of always shutting them back, acknowledging the pain that hasn’t ever really gone away. (And this is not to say you can’t wank your way through a crisis, so that could still happen.) Bur whatever it is, it’s John by himself, and much like Sherlock that’s never a good thing.
Yeah, I definitely hope for a scene like this in S4. We need it.
However, in relation with the scene Martin is filming that he doesn’t want to, my thoughts…
1. From Martin’s POV, it’s something he’s not going to like to do because the implication from Mark was that he’d be whinging at them (the writers) about having to do it if they were there. I think a strongly dark/emotional scene would be something he’d love, similar to the scenes at Emma’s office on TRF. That’s the shit actor’s eat up. Things he’s whinge about would be things he thinks are dorky or embarrassing, like the kareoke. Shower, implied wank, making a fool of himself in public (ala chip and pin), taking a pratfall, etc. For Martin, something where he thinks he’ll physically look bad, like something with his hair being stupid or being covered in muck. We know he’s vain. ;-) Something along those lines.
2. From the creator’s POV, it’s not an important enough scene that they were NEED to be there. If it was a heavy emotional scene, or a key story scene in the plotline, they’d want to be present to make sure they got what they needed in the can. Since they’re skipping it, it’s just not that critical methinks.

Yes, ok these points are incredibly spot on. So it’s probably some comical nonsense bit? I’m having a hard time coming up with something awkward/funny/odd that would work with John on his own, his comedy is all about reactions to those around him. But I guess we don’t have proof it’s John *alone* in the scene, just that tptb didn’t have to be on set. And I think it’s a good point that if it was emotional significant, mofftiss would still want to be there, even if Martin didn’t like it. Ok, one last effort:
The bath scene?
I could see filming a bath scene being the sort of thing he’d hate. Introspective in the bath? Who know until we see the footage. Could be anything really.

This is very interesting. So whatever is happening this season, Ben and Martin knew the story would go there from the very start. It certainly brings to mind johnlock, because if that was Stephen/Mark’s plan from the start, the actors would have had to be in on it. They played it as a romance from the pilot (boy howdy).
