August 18, 1863 - August 18, 2013

Actual murder: U.S. Marshal—and U.S. Army Major—Joseph Cummings is found shot dead 150 years ago today in an arroyo during Kit Carson’s roundup of the Navajos. There were $700,000 to $1,000,000 of today’s dollars in his saddlebags. Carson reports in the Army Archives, implausibly, that his “brave and lamented” Major was shot by a concealed Indian, one of roughly 9,000 Navajo that Carson’s Army couldn’t seem to find. What did happen to Cummings? And where is Cummings’ former associate---General Canby’s aide de camp---and the millions of dollars HE embezzled from the Army, the Territory, and the Church? You have to dig deep into the activities of a group of actual, real life con artists in the midst of the Civil War, the Apache Wars, and the Navajo Wars in the New Mexico and Arizona Territories to discover the answers. But they’re there--and in the fictionalized murder mystery, "Where They Bury You." Deep in the desert and exactly 150 years in the past.

“A gripping Western told on the eve of the Civil War in the Arizona and New Mexico Territories.”

“Steve Kohlhagen knows the West, knows his history, and combines them here into a fast-paced, irresistible story!” - Bernard Cornwell

“In this rough-and-tumble frontier story, endless layers of deceit up the ante and interest.” - Kirkus Reviews

“…Kohlhagen avoids all the traps and clichés of typical Westerns and keeps true to his story. All in all, Where They Bury You is a very impressive novel for fans of Westerns and even for those who are not fans of Westerns. It has a universal appeal. Definitely a quality read. 4.5 stars.” - Joseph Spuckler, Author-Alliance http://www.author-alliance.com/where-...
