An Excerpt from “Chief of Thieves”

Just for fun, here’s another excerpt from Chief of Thieves. This happens to be based on a true scene from Colorado—Holon Godfrey was an actual early Colorado pioneer/rancher:

“August 23, 1864

Godfrey raced toward the burning American Ranche, visible in the distance. He had left his wife, Matilda, and his family safe back at his ranch compound, and was aware that he was at risk from Cheyenne along the two mile ride. When he arrived at the American, there was no one to be seen. No guests, no Cheyenne. Just a burning hotel.

Over the past two months the skirmishing among the settlers, the Cheyenne, and various small groups of Colorado Volunteers had intensified. Stages were being attacked, cattle stolen, and settlers besieged with increasing frequency….”

A New 5-Star Review of Chief of Thieves

I just saw Laurie Jenkin’s review of Chief of Thieves on her delightful blog Laurie’s Thoughts and Reviews.

“The story telling kept me reading far into the night,” she says. “The characters and the events of the period seemed so real they became friends I was sorry to say goodbye to at the end” after the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

Spoiler alert, she “loved” it. She also included a review for Where They Bury You, the prequel. She only “really liked” the first novel.

For those of you who already read the first book, people keep saying they like Chief of Thieves better (and, of course, if you haven’t yet read Where They Bury You, you’re not (yet) too far behind to catch up!).

Here’s the entire review(s), or, as they say on the beach in the latest DISH commercials, “don’t just take it from me, you can get it straight from my horse’s mouth,” by clicking here.

"Chief of Thieves" Has Arrived

Posted on June 15, 2015 by stevenwkohlhagen Edit
"Chief of Thieves" is now published. It is the sequel to Where They Bury You. If you liked Where They Bury You I’m told this sequel is better. If you missed the first one, you’re now officially falling behind, but in luck, as you can now get both.

Chief of Thieves picks up with Lily and Auggy where we left them in August of 1863. It follows them in Lily’s search for her ranch, first in Oregon, then Wyoming, and climaxing in June 1876 at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

The product of months of enjoyable research and months of loving writing is now available to you merely with the one second touch of your index finger at Barnes & Noble and Amazon (except Amazon is fixing a temporary glitch).

Three Days! Chief of Thieves Available Through One Click By You!

I’m finally getting excited, as Chief of Thieves, the sequel to Where They Bury You is being published in three days---Monday, June 15! I’d like to share one of my favorite excerpts from the book, an October 1868 scene, based on a true event in Laramie, Wyoming on that date. The two main characters in this scene work for Lily and Auggy on the ranch---Lincoln, who had escaped from South Carolina slavery, and Nick, an Irish immigrant orphaned by an earlier Shoshone Indian attack. You can read the excerpt here: https://goo.gl/P5e1yS

I hope you enjoy the scene, and---soon---the entire book.

Chief of Thieves, Sunstone Press, will be available on June 15, 2015 at Amazon, http://goo.gl/o42FtT.
