In the summer of “Wonder Woman,” Who is Samms?

My brand new terrorist thriller, The Point of a Gun, is now out as an eBook and will be available in its print version from Amazon July 13. See my new website for details and an excerpt www.StevenWKohlhagen.com .
For those who have seen “Wonder Woman,” it is, apparently, the summer of the strong female protagonist. By sheer coincidence, Samms appears on page one of The Point of a Gun and grabs the U.S. Counterterrorism community and the reader by the throat with her “blood-soaked hands…at breakneck speed” and won’t let go (the quote is by Bernard Cornwell). WHO IS SAMMS?
It quickly turns out that she is a very high level U.S. Government official, secretly leading an undercover, rogue group of vigilantes, killing would be terrorists. BUT WHO IS SAMMS? Is she the Deputy Director of the CIA for Counterterrorism? Or is she Deputy Director of the FBI for Counterterrorism? Or is she the senior ops woman working with the Deputy Director of the U.S. Army JSOC for Counterterrorism? And how is she pre-identifying terrorists? How are she and her not-so-merry band getting away with cold blooded murder even as she serves on the President’s White House Task Force charged with discovering her true identity?
And if she is caught, what does the government intend to do with her? WHO IS SAMMS and what should be done about her and her secret group of rogue vigilantes?
The Point of a Gun, published by Edition Barenklau and coming to you from your Amazon dealer right there on this screen.

“We have responsibilities to each other”

Those are the words Peggy Noonan uses to end her WSJ article this week on our increasing American polarization and “great estrangement”. See her entire characteristically thought-provoking article here: http://tinyurl.com/y96ma637

And now it brings terrorism! Now the ratcheting up of our increasing hatred and disrespect (“….We look down on each other, fear each other, increasingly hate each other….”) has led to a terrorist attack in Alexandria, Virginia directed at our elected representatives.

Journalists, other media representatives, our elected representatives have all contributed to this increasingly unacceptable environment. She—and we—ask “….Oh, to have a unifying figure, program or party….” And she understandably concludes we don’t have one. But could the answer come from here: http://www.centristproject.org/ ? Or something like them.

Absent an unlikely immediate and dramatic cultural and environmental change, in all likelihood terrorist attacks will increase in this environment. and not only from foreign extremists.

We should stop waiting for the media and our politicians and our police and security forces to fix this problem. After all, we have ultimate unavoidable respectable responsibilities to each other—to our children, grandchildren, and, yes, on this day to our fathers.

A Difficult Choice, Indeed

In light of the London Bridge terrorist attacks, retired General Amidror recently wrote that free western societies have a very difficult choice to make. Namely: “….what it values more: its privacy, in which case terrorist attacks the likes of which we witnessed (in London) will continue uninterrupted, or relinquishing a few rights in favor of decreasing the threat of terrorism. This will not be a simple decision to make.”

More pointedly, how can a free society simultaneously protect its citizens and meet the requirements of the Constitutional human rights for future terrorists?

These not “simple decisions” are at the heart of my new terrorist thriller, The Point of a Gun. Available on eBook starting June 24 with the print copy available for order July 13.

“…you’d never leave the house…”

No matter your source of worldwide news it is hard to escape the growing feeling that the trend for terrorism is in the wrong direction. Up, not down.

And yes, the U.S. DHS Chief, John Kelly, did recently say, if you knew what I knew about terror, you’d “never leave the house.” Really? He then went on record praising the efforts of U.S. Counterterrorism forces, but then went on to conclude, “But it can happen here almost anytime.”

In a world where we expect our security forces to protect our citizens while also protecting the Bill of Rights freedoms of suspected terrorists and “known wolves,” we shouldn’t be surprised to hear that it can happen here anytime.

My new novel, The Point of a Gun, out in less than ten days, is precisely about the near-impossibility of protecting citizens in a free society from those who wish them ill. And, as recent events in Alexandria, Virginia show us, we’re not only talking about extremist muslim jihadists.

The main protagonist in my new novel, Samms, is a senior U.S. Counterterrorism official secretly leading a group killing terrorists who are in the act of killing innocent citizens. She is an unknown CIA, FBI, or U.S. Army (JSOC) senior Director. Who is Samms, and what, if anything, should be done about her and her people?

You will have the opportunity to know soon enough.

Preview of Coming Attractions: “The Point of a Gun” Coming to an Amazon Outlet and Bookstores Near You Soon

My contemporary terrorist thriller, The Point of a Gun, is being published by Edition Barenklau in English this Spring and in German before Christmas.

The novel takes place in an America of the near future. An America where jihadist, white supremacist, and Mexican cartel domestic terrorist attacks are being executed at an increasing rate. A group of domestic Vigilantes emerges and starts killing terrorists at the scene of their attacks. Suspecting that the vigilantes are led by senior U.S. Counter-terrorism officials, the President creates a senior government task force and hires a special investigator to discover their identities.

The story careens between the escalating attacks by both the terrorists and the vigilantes, and the task force’s efforts circling ever closer to finding the identities of the senior U.S. officials. How can the government conceal the vigilante activity from the public, and what will the President do with the vigilantes once he and his special investigator know who they are?

Stay tuned.

“Chief of Thieves” now available in German: “Hauptling der Diebe”

Chief of Thieves, my sequel to Where They Bury You, is now available from Edition Barenklau on Amazon as Hauptling der Diebe:

https://www.amazon.de/dp/B06XBXBNYD/r...

My friend Manfred Quintus, from my father and grandparents’ hometown of Konz, Germany, has done his usual excellent job of translating the Western historical fiction novel into German. His earlier work included his translation of the predecessor novel into German, Wo Man Dich Begrabt. Both novels have been the recipients of literary awards.

For those of you with German friends and a need for gift ideas, there are many German holidays coming up! No waiting on Amazon!
