Are We There Yet?
Summers and road trips go together like hot fudge on a sundae and cheese on a plate of nachos. It’s hard to imagine one without the other.
Perhaps road trips are on my mind this week because it’s family vacation time … and it’s much cheaper to drive our gang to the destination than fly them there (and then rent a car to get around!) But inevitably somewhere along the fourteen hours in a car, someone asks this week’s cliché (unoriginal thought).
Are we there yet?
No. We aren’t. But we’re close...

Beauty Is Only Skin Deep
I spent time looking in the mirror today. Granted, the first bit was while putting in my contacts so I could actually see for the rest of the day. Then, I started on the beauty treatments and make-up designed to minimize my spots and wrinkles while drawing attention to the best parts. I mean, while I happen to like the color of my eyes, please look at them, not the crow’s feet nearby.
As a member of the over-forty club, I’m well aware of this week’s cliché (unoriginal thought): Beauty is only...

The More Things Change, The More They Stay the Same
Things are changing at the Fick household.
The oldest child just graduated from high school into a special needs transition program to work on her job skills. Child number two is entering his senior year and we’ve been checking out the college options. The “baby” is entering middle school. And I’m ramping up promotion plans for my first published novel this fall.
With new adventures and an emptying nest, things are changing.
Yet, as conveyed in this week’s cliché (unoriginal thought), the mor...

All For One and One For All
Call me crazy, but for some reason I thought the kids would pitch in more around the house this summer. After all, I’m still a working mom and since they didn’t have to go to their “job” of school …
This week’s cliché (unoriginal thought) pretty much sums up my expectations for our family, even if they didn’t quite work out: all for one and one for all.
All of the family members working together for one common goal and each individual serving with all of the others in mind.
It reminds me of...

What Doesn’t Kill You Will Make You Stronger
As I’m writing this, I’ve been sitting outside under the hot summer sun watching my oldest son play in a baseball tournament. Sweat trickling down my back and a cooler full of melting ice beside me. After back to back to back days of juggling my work and writing around his football 7-on-7 tournament, working at a basketball camp, fireworks stand shifts, and other baseball games … well, we’re both more than tired.
Which reminds me of this week’s cliché (unoriginal thought): what doesn’t kill m...

Many Hands Make Light Work
With the 4th of July around the corner, it’s the season for fireworks. I love the bursts of color against the night sky as well as the explosion of sentiment set to a backdrop of patriotic music.
But this year fireworks have taken on a different tone since my soon-to-be-senior son and I have been working shifts in the senior class fireworks stand to raise money for their missions trip over Spring Break. There’s nothing quite like hours inside a tent in extreme heat trying to convince the few...

My Lips Are Sealed
Can you keep a secret? There’s just something about those words that heightens our awareness, piques our curiosity, and gets us ready to hear the latest news from a friend.
But then (assuming it’s not about something dangerous like abuse or suicidal thoughts where I need to find them help),do I keep the secret I hear? Or will I find the juicy tidbit too sweet and succumb to the temptation to gossip? Or even worse, will I hide the gossip behind the Christian veneer of “sharing a prayer need?”

Easier Said Than Done
As the countdown to launch day has begun, I’m increasingly aware of the long list of things still to get ready. And as I listen to marketing podcasts and review my notes from previous writing conferences, the lists keep on growing and growing.
Not that anything is toodifficult to accomplish, just time consuming. Therefore the balance between intention and implementation becomes a daily struggle, especially when weighed against a busy household of kids on summer vacation, their friends coming...

Time To Smell The Roses
Now that the rainiest MayI can rememberis behind us, I seemany of my neighbors doing yard work. Bushes are trimmed back, decorative rock walls updated, and flats of annuals installed in planters or hanging baskets. Witha little time and the sunshine Colorado is normally known for, soon there will be gorgeous colors everywhere. Not to mention the fragrance of roses wafting on the evening breeze. Simply amazing.
Yet, for all of our manicured yards with curb appeal, how many of us actually spend...

Time Flies
They say that time flies when you’re having fun.
They also say to enjoy the moment because babies grow up so fast. But those two statements seem to contradict since middle-of-the-night feedings, diapers, cleaning up puke, consoling teary children, and countless hours of worrying and praying about their futures aren’t exactly fun and seem to last a really long time! However, there are moments in every life when we take a glance back and wonder where the years went.
Statements like the opening...
