Organize 2014 Reading with Reading Challenges

Does your time and reading plans coincide? Is your to-be-read (TBR) pile so high you can’t see over it? Don’t know where to start? How about solving the dilemma with reading challenges?

Last year was the first time I took part in reading challenges. I loved it so much I subscribed to almost every reading challenge I came across. Needless to say, too much is not good.

This year I’m taking a more modest approach. Well, at least in the beginning, I’ll probably add more challenges as I discover them.

Benefits of Reading Challenges

It’s fun.
If you like ticking off items on a check-list, then you will enjoy completing challenges.
It’s a great way to set your reading goals for the year.
You are not alone. With these challenges you meet other participants and reading groups.
Goodreads is the home to all bookworms. Make friends with other bookworms with similar reading tastes. Recommend books and read the reviews of books you want to read.
The different reading challenges allow you to organize your books in categories that make sense in a fun way.
Take part in the TBR-pile challenges and read those books you’ve always wanted to but never get time for.
It’s a great way to rank the books you want to read for book reviews.

Reading challenges for 2014
Goodread Reading Challenge

This is the main Goodreads Reading Challenge. How many books are you planning to read in 2014?

My goal is to read 24 books.

read 4 books toward her goal of 24 books.

Christian Fiction Devourers Group Challenges

The variety of reading challenges in this group is more than enough to keep you busy for the year. I chose the following challenges:

Finish the Series Reading Challenge

The object of this challenge is to finish a series. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t started or whether you’ve read some of the books in the series and never finished the series. There are three, maybe four, series I chose to read:

The Pendragon Cycle by Stephen Lawhead
The Song of Albion by Stephen Lawhead
Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis
Empyrion by Stephen Lawhead

In this challenge add the number of series you want to finish, not the books.

Back to the Classics in 2014

The object is to read books that are classics, including children’s classics. My goal is 7 books. It is inevitable that specific books will fall under more than one group. For example Chronicles of Narnia is a series I would like to finish. The books are also ideal for the Back to the Classics challenge.

I love puzzles of different kinds. This challenge satisfies the puzzle lover in me. The object is to read 6 books with one of the following descriptions in the title:

A type of element of the weather, such as wind, rain, thunder, in the title.
A profession such as preacher, teacher, detective in the title.
A number written in letters in the title, such as twelve, thirteenth, tenth.
A body part, such as eye, hand, foot, in the title.
A building such as, house, temple, office, in the title.
Reference to time in the title, such as final hour.

New Author to You Reading Challenge

This is a great reading challenge to inspire you to read books by authors you haven’t read before. The author may be well-known but to you, who read the book for the first time, he or she is a new author. My goal is to discover 6 new authors.

E-Reader Challenge

E-readers are convenient and extremely beneficial to book lovers. I don’t think my budget and my desire for books were ever compatible, until e-readers. E-readers opened a door to a vast selection of books at affordable prices and instantaneously available to read with the click of a button.  Needless to say this challenge delves into all those eBooks waiting to be read. My goal is 8 eBooks, which is a very modest goal.

Non-Fiction Challenge

Although life is a journey that becomes a story, all book lovers know that all books are not fiction.  This challenge is for those great non-fiction books you want to read. My goal is to read 4 non-fiction books.

The Phd-TBR pile Challenge

At last, the reading challenge that will make a dent in your pile of books you’ve been planning to read for so long. My goal is to read 10 books from this long-awaited to-be-read pile.   Are you joining me in these reading challenges? What other reading challenges are you taking part in? Happy reading!

Imagine having all the facts, information, life history of Jesus in an easy accessible format, user-friendly, and at your convenience.  You don’t have to imagine it any more. Rose Publishing has surpassed itself with the excellent project of Jesus, part of the Rose Bible Basics Series. Jesus overflows with a wealth of information about Jesus, his life, his history, proven facts and it is all about Jesus.

Who should read Jesus?

This easy readable, eye-pleasing format would satisfy a wide range of readers, from your Bible scholars seeking facts to your everyday Christian who would like to know more about Jesus. Both groups would enjoy this book tremendously.

How to use this book

Use Jesus as a

Reference book,
Bible study guide to study specific topics about Jesus or
Biblical based book about Jesus and the truth about him.

Although Jesus is jam-packed with facts and information, it reads like a story. Start at the beginning, or if you can’t wait, jump to the chapter that interests you the most.

Peek at the Contents

The chapters discuss the following themes:

Life of Jesus. Answer questions such as, why Jesus came and why he died on the cross. Scripture references include what Jesus said and what people said about him
Facts and Fictions about Jesus.  Common misconceptions about Jesus are explored. Did Jesus really exist or was he a myth? Was he married? Did he really die on the cross?
Gospel side by side. A side by side comparison of the four Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Jesus’ miracles, parables told by Jesus, his life in chronological order, are also included.
Beatitudes. What are the Beatitudes, the meaning of each beatitude and relevant questions for today are discussed in this chapter.
Lord’s Prayer.  Each section of the prayer is explored in terms of the attributes of God.
Names of Jesus. There are 50 names of Jesus with the meaning and Bible references revealed in this chapter.
Christ in the Old Testament. Explore prophesies in the Old Testament fulfilled by Jesus. The Old Testament is the foreshadow of the New Testament. This chapter shows 13 people who foreshadowed Jesus.
Christ in the Passover. Read about the history of the Passover, where is Passover in the Bible, the meaning of the symbolism of Passover, and the celebration of it.

Study Guide included

A study guide (also downloadable) of each chapter is at the end of the book with a worksheet.

Jesus Healed a Man’s Hand on the Sabbath

This entry is part 13 of 13 in the series Galilean ministry

Matthew 12:9-14
Mark 3:1-6
Luke 6:6-11

At the synagogue Jesus saw a man with a deformed hand. The Pharisees wanted to trap Jesus in giving a wrong answer so they would have something to charge him with. So they asked him whether the Law permitted someone to work or heal on a Sabbath.

Enemies watched closely to trick or catch Jesus in doing something wrong. They kept hammering on Sabbath issues on different occasions, not understanding the principles. They were staring at man-made interpretation of the Law and therefore missing all the grace and compassion intended.

The Sabbath rules included that people only helped someone if their lives were in danger. Healings were not deemed emergencies.

Jesus answered them with an example of a sheep that fell into a well.

Jesus knew their thoughts. He asked the man with the withered hand to come and stand in front of everyone.  Then he asked the critics whether the Law permitted good deeds on a Sabbath or should you do evil? Is the Sabbath a day of saving a life or destroying it?

They didn’t answer Jesus because they couldn’t. Then Jesus told the man to hold out his hand and when the man did, he restored it so that it was the same as his other hand.

The Pharisees left very angry and plotted to kill Jesus. They were proud, fearful of Jesus and outraged that he exposed their evil attitude in front of the crowd. They were more loyal to the religious system than God.  They were jealous of his popularity, the miracles he did and the authority in which he taught.

They wanted the glory. They were supposed to be the ones doing all these things, to having the public in awe with their accomplishments. The Pharisees completely lost sight of the goal of the Law and of their purpose. They forgot they were supposed to worship God and bring people closer to God, not drive them away.

They should have been the first ones to recognize the Messiah. They didn’t acknowledge him because they didn’t want to lose their prestige and power. When Jesus exposed them, he became their enemy. Instead of repenting and following Jesus’ example, they looked for ways to turn the people against Jesus to regain the people’s admiration.

They were uncaring and angry that Jesus challenged their political ambitions. They broke the Law when they began plotting murder.

They considered healing as a practicing a profession and their concern was more for keeping with traditions than having compassion for someone in pain. But it backfired on them. Jesus wasn’t a Man who fit into their system. He read their minds and caught them red-handed. Their hearts were exposed and it wasn’t filled with the love of God.

“I Didn’t Know” is for more than just an audience of one. If you look to your left, look to your right, or directly in the mirror, you will see or know someone who has been sexually abused… even if you look in the mirror, and the person is YOU! More than the tragedy of sexual abuse is the tragedy of the silence of sexual abuse. It must be talked about. Our stories have to be shared; someone’s life is literally depending upon YOU to BREAK THE IGNORANCE OF SILENCE! “I Didn’t Know” brings to the forefront the many hidden faces of child sexual abuse. The author, Yvette L. Allen-Tatum, shares not only her story, but the compelling testimonies of others–everyone from the actual victim, to the offender, to those who standby by in disbelief and allow these heinous crimes against our children to continue. Our voices have to be heard, our children must be free or freed to tell the TRUTH: that someone touched them. Who can they run to? Will it be you?

From The Author

I Didn’t Know – Identifying, Confronting & Overcoming Child Sexual Abuse – the title is indicative of the subject matter.  In this book the author brings to the forefront the many faces of child sexual abuse; those of the victims and the abusers.  Yvette Allen-Tatum boldly confronts her past of child sexual abuse to demonstrate that TRUE deliverance is possible.  Yvette believes that we ALL (victims, abusers, enablers, nay-sayers, etc.) can OVERCOME the horrible effects of child sexual abuse.

This book proves that true healing is possible and necessary for us to become more than CONQUERORS through Christ Jesus.

As a community, we have to:

Identify Child Sexual Abuse –

We have to talk about it (raise public awareness)
Know the signs & symptoms

Confront Child Sexual Abuse –

Error on the side of caution – THE CHILD
Be quick to BELIEVE the victim and make all necessary inquiries
Studies show people are more apt to believe the innocence of the accused; this has to END

Overcome Child Sexual Abuse –

We overcome by the Blood of the Lamb and the WORD of OUR TESTIMONY

Dachshunds and Books

dachshunds and books - The Four Faces

My mom loves dachshunds; she thinks they are the best pets in the world. She is also an avid reader. Guess how she combined the two…she has bookends with the head and tail of a dachshund. The books in-between represent the body. Since dachshunds have long bodies, she adds as many books as the bookshelf can hold.

A pile of books will easily fall over if stacked too high. The slightest bump against a shelf of books without support causes the books to fall over like dominoes.

What bookends keep God’s Word intact in your life?

Reading the Word of God for the purpose of gaining knowledge stacked in your mind is like a house built on sand. The slightest rain or storm will cause the house to collapse. When reading the Word of God with the revelation of who Jesus Christ is, your house is built on the Rock. It will stand in the midst of any storm or calamity. The truth is embedded into your heart, it becomes more than knowledge, it is a knowing.

Smiling, your arm brushes against your bookshelf as you walk past.  Surprised, you watch the books fall over to the one side. Why did that happen? You believe the Word of God, you have the revelation, and you have faith… what is missing?

Books need to be supported on both ends to stay upright. Faith without works is useless (James 2:20). Application of the Word of God combined with the revelation of Jesus Christ is how the Word will become flesh in your daily life.

Road to Emmaus, Wish you were There

Road to Emmaus

Luke 24:13-35 – Road to Emmaus

Do you wish you were there, that you were one of those two men, on the road to Emmaus, who met Jesus along the way? Do you wish you could be part of that conversation, to hear Jesus explaining everything about him in the Bible?

Would it surprise you to know that you have that opportunity daily and much more?

They had the Old Testament to read; today you read the Old Testament and the New Testament. The New Testament tells you all about Jesus’ time when he dwelled on earth. It also tells you about Jesus in heaven sitting at the right hand of God.

John 1 describes Jesus as God and as the Word of God. Creation was created through Jesus. Therefore the Word of God does tell you all about Jesus.

However, there is another advantage you have that the two men on the road to Emmaus didn’t have. You have the Holy Spirit permanently with you. He teaches and tells you about Jesus on a constant basis. He answers your questions; he interprets the Word of God for you daily. It is not only a once-off experience.

How do you know this to be true? Jesus promised you so. In John 14:26, Jesus talks about the Holy Spirit; he tells you that the Holy Spirit is your Helper who will teach you all things about him.

The question you should ask yourself is what do you do about it? Are you using this great opportunity God has given you? You have the Bible to read and study. The Holy Spirit is there to teach you, to interpret for you and guide you. God also uses people to teach you the Bible. Listen to them and apply the Word of God in your daily life. God speaks to you through the people, but he also speaks to you directly.

Bloggiesta Update Spring 2014

Bloggiesta Spring 2014 Watermarked

The Start-up post is here. This Bloggiesta update post describes the mini challenges completed.

Official quote by Bloggiesta

In short, Bloggiesta is a blogging marathon revolving around ticking off those items on your to-do list and improving your blog while in the good company of other awesome bloggers doing the same thing. Our awesome mascot Pedro (Plan. Edit. Develop. Review. Organize) is ready to break out the nachos, enchiladas, drinks, mariachi music and whack a pinata or two! It’s nothing short of an awesome fiesta!

Taking part in the Bloggiesta Spring 2014 is fun and empowering. There are so many nuggets and tips to receive from the mini challenges available. It is inspiring and gives a person new motivation for your blog.

Mini Challenge Completed

The Following Mini Challenges were completed during Bloggiesta Spring 2014:

Getting Organized
Getting Organized with Evernote

Getting Organized with Evernote and more at Tif Talk Books describes the different tools to use and examples of bloggers who use that specific tool. I am testing OneNote against Evernote to decide which one I prefer.

Organization and Productivity

Organization and Productivity at Read Sleep Repeat is something close to my heart and very appropriate at the moment. I enjoy setting goals and scheduling. However I have learnt during the years there are certain ways that work better for me than others.

My List

Start with what you want long-term.
Break it down to medium-term and short-term.
Break it further down and more and more until you have bite-size tasks.
These I add to my Task list on Microsoft Outlook and I color-code each category.
My secret is to add all the tasks with Friday as the deadline, except the tasks that have specific deadlines. By doing this, I accomplish everything that week but I am flexibility in when I do what.

Windows Live Writer

What is Windows Live Writer and how to use it at The Book Vixen is a great discovery to me! I immediately downloaded and set up my blog in it. Window Live Writer is a powerful tool to use for writing, saving and publishing blog posts.

Attached is the screen print of the template created using Dynamic Template Plugin.

Template created using Dynamic Template Plugin

The other fun stuff I did when trying out Windows Live Writer was:

I wrote and published the starter post to Bloggiesta Spring 2014.
Within the above post I inserted the Bloggiesta image, added a hyperlink to it and used bullet lists.
In this post I block quoted the official quote of what Bloggiesta is.
The above image is watermarked with the text: Template for Book Review.
The Dynamic Template plugin is a handy tool to created templates for your regular posts (see the example above).

Social Media
How to Tackle Google+ at Amanda Shofner

I have a Google+ profile. I completed the following tasks:

I joined the Bloggiesta community and introduced myself.
Google+ Authorship – My Google Authorship is up to date.
I updated my tagline to Writing That Breathes Life  and the different links. Cleaned up the profile a bit.
My latest circle I created is Idea Factory.

Other Social Media mini challenges completed

Using Social Media at Doing Dewey is a great post on the different social medias.
Love at First Book has a great post titled Twitter List Tutorial.
Facebook Pages for Blogs Yay or Nay at Travelling with T answers the question.

Windows Live Writer was my favorite mini challenge to complete. I also found the other mini challenges extremely useful for creating my business plan and planning my goals and schedules for the rest of the year. Bloggiesta Spring 2014 came at the perfect time for me.

My To-Do List

The Mini Challenges are always very good and helpful. Therefore I spend most of my time on these challenges. This time I am going to do it slightly different.

It is time to update the business plan. After all it is a living document. Although I have an idea where I’m going and have set goals, I must confess I haven’t written down my business plan in one single document. This weekend I am going to spend time on the mini challenges that coincide with the aspects I want to address in the business plan.

At the end of the Bloggiesta I will put everything together and finish the business plan.

 The Twitter parties schedules are:

Thursday March 27 @ 9 p.m. Eastern:  Social Media and Your Blog
Friday March 28 @ 4 p.m. Eastern: Technical Aspects of Blogging
Saturday March 29 @ 11 a.m. Eastern: Organization
Sunday March 30 @ 8 p.m. Eastern: Book Blogging and Misc.

Use the hashtag #bloggiesta for the twitter parties.

The mini challenge categories are:

Social media
General blog improvement
Getting organized
Challenges specific to book blogging

Come and join me! Write your blog post with your to-do list and signup. If you are taking part, let me know by commenting below.
