Overall, I really enjoyed it. I do think it would’ve been more impactful for me if I’d read it when I was a teenage girl, but nonetheless it was still an entertaining read and I can appreciate the themes within it. I found some of the twists to be a bit predictable, but that didn’t lessen my enjoyment of the overall story by any means.

I also liked that the ending is open to interpretation for what happens to the protagonist. I wasn’t expecting a certain subplot that happens around the halfway point of the book… (I won’t spoil any specifics) but I found that section to be as compelling as the more action-packed parts, even though the protagonist remains in one location for the duration of it, and it lasts a good chunk of the middle of the novel. It introduces a character that I really ended up getting attached to… (and I’ll leave it at that, lol).

I also did like the sections that were focused on the group of girls and their deteriorating situation. For the most part, I think even the side characters felt pretty fleshed-out, which I’m pleasantly surprised by. I’m also satisfied with the conclusion of where each of the girls ended up by the end of the book (again, can’t really say much more than that due to spoilers).

I thought this story had pretty good world-building, though I think stronger connections could’ve been made with certain things. For as much as religion gets mentioned in a vague sense throughout the novel, it’s not actually really part of the plot in a meaningful way, imo. I kind of expected the author to do more with that aspect of it, given the themes of patriarchy and whatnot.

Also, I couldn’t really figure out whether this book was supposed to take place in a futuristic version of our society, or if it was supposed to be more of an alternate reality type of situation. In part because of how some of the religious lore is built up, because it doesn’t really fit actual real-world Christianity (which is clearly the religion that’s being alluded to throughout the novel) in that the society the protagonist lives in seems to consider Eve as a sort of deity, but also everyone has Bibles and they go to church and celebrate Christmas (that holiday gets mentioned by name in the book). But also it seems like the story of Eve, in the lore of this book, is not the same as the traditional one most people think of when they think of the story of the Garden of Eden.

So, I guess my question is whether this book is supposed to be set in a sort of alternate universe, where the accepted religion in this society was informed by a different version of the Bible because technically it’s not the real-world Bible, so to speak, or if it’s supposed to be more of a situation where this story does take place in the “real world”, but at some point over the centuries, religion got manipulated by some kind of cult or whatever, and now, however far into the future they are, they have a different view from what the “original” Christianity was.

I’m assuming this sort of analysis is supposed to be open to individual reader interpretation, but I think unless the author has an actual explanation for it (even if it’s not explicitly mentioned within the text itself), it’s kind of a plot hole.

Because why do the characters have Bibles, go to church, talk about capital “G” God, and celebrate Christmas, but also have a very different interpretation of Eve? I get that things aren’t really as they seem, which the protagonist eventually discovers, but even so, what exactly is being taught at church (or being read in the Bibles in this story) that makes the society the protagonist lives in believe what it does?

Idk. I’m probably thinking too hard about this, lol.

Anyways, I ended up rating this book 4 stars, as it was a solidly enjoyable reading experience for me. I think if you like speculative fiction, or books like “The Handmaid’s Tale” (but a less intense, more YA version), then you might wanna give this a try. ...more
