Improve your German with Antosch & Lin

If you are a regular reader yo know that I’m always looking for extra activities that you, the German learner, can do in addition to your normal German lesson. I have found sites with videos, music, games, smartphone apps, to name a few. If you want to find online ideas, check out the ‘Free online resources‘ category.

But practising German with videos, music or games isn’t everybody’s cup of tea, so today I’m telling you about a different site. Oliver Antosch and his wife Wei Hsiang Lin have...

Deutsch am Donnerstag – Wiltshire von A bis Z

Wiltshire von A bis Z

I hope you enjoyed the last 10 weeks of Deutsch am Donnerstag. My book Wiltshire von A bis Z has a lot more chapters than I used here but they were not really suitable for reading comprehension exercises. They do, however, have lots of photos and also links to websites, so if you’d like to improve your German and find out a little bit more about wonderful Wiltshire, I’d be delighted if you’d buy my kindle book!

Deutsch am Donnerstag is taking a break n...

How to use a German parking disc

How to use a German parking discDo you remember disc parking?

A conversation in a Facebook group reminded me that I still had mine. In Devizes we had the disc parking scheme until 2003 and most people binned theirs afterwards, but I kept mine because it is still used in Germany and because mine is a German disc.

The German disc – die Parkscheibe – allows you free parking for a certain time in certain areas. If, for example, you see this sign, it means you can park here for two hours for free as long as you display your park...

Deutsch am Donnerstag – a reading comprehension about Wiltshire’s White Horses

Welcome to part 10 of my reading comprehension exercises based on my book Wiltshire von A bis Z. Today you’ll find out out a little bit aboutthe White Horses.

White Horse

How to buy a German train ticket from a machine

2014-12-23 12.21.10

Whenever I teach a beginners’ class there is always the obligatory lesson on how to buy a train ticket. You know the ones, asking how much a ticket is and then buying it …

But what do you do when you get to the station and there is no kiosk to buy your ticket, only a machine or nothing at all?

You panic! Right?

No, you won’t because a) there will be machines, either at the station or on the train, b) the machines can be set to the English language, but that’s not much fun, and c) I will show...

Practise your German with videos from BookBox

Practise your German with videos from BookBox

I came across BookBox this weekend. Although they seem to have been around for a while, it was the first time that I saw one of their videos. Based in India, they make short videos of children’s stories in various languages, including German. Each story has subtitles, so you can read along with it, or you can download the stories as PDFs from the website (make sure it’s set to ‘German’). Even better is their Android app (iPhone not available yet in German)

I’ve just had great fun watching so...

Deutsch am Donnerstag – a reading comprehension about Salisbury

Welcome to part 8 of my reading comprehension exercises based on my book Wiltshire von A bis Z. Today you’ll find out out a little bit about Salisbury.

salisbury cathedral
