A week in Berlin
Over the years I’ve had comments from students who went to Berlin. Each time they said how much they enjoyed their stay and isn’t it lovely there. Then they got my surprise answer: “I think so, but I haven’t been there.” “What? You haven’t been to Berlin???”
It thendawned on me that lots of my students, my children and other members of my family have visited Berlin, but not me! So, at the beginning of the month I rectified it byspending a week in Berlin. … as a tourist!
And I fell in love wi...

Three white pigeons – a German listening exercise
I took a picture of this pretty white pigeon the other day and it reminded me of a German lesson I held a few years ago. It was a listening exercise with a song about three white pigeons. On my way home I wondered whether the band who sung this song were still around. So I did some googling, found the song on YouTube and found out that the band was still making music. Not only that, they gave permission for me to use their song for theexercise on this blog post.
So, first of all, who are the...

10 Facebook pages that can teach you German
Two weeks ago I told you about 10 German Facebook pages that help you read and understand more German, andtoday you can find out about 10 Facebook pages that can help you learn or improve your German because these pages teach German. 13 German idioms featuring birds
Don’t you just love idioms? Like ‘the early bird catches the worm’ or ‘a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush’. I was always told that, if you know idioms in a foreign language, you’re fluent (or, alternatively, if you can swear in that language )
So, are there any ‘bird’ idioms or phrases in German? Yes is the answer and here they are:

Practise your German with Google Now and Google Maps
Last week I watched this wonderful video from German teacherHerr Antrim about using Google on your Android Phone for practising your German. I won’t repeat everything as his video says it all, so here it is:
Great stuff, isn’t it?
But I’d like to add something else you can do with Google. If you have Google maps installed you can use your satnav for practising your directions.
First you need to change the language. On your phone, go to ‘Settings’, then ‘Language’ and change the language to...

Practise your German with interesting quizzes
If you are a regular visitor to Facebook you have probably come across those “What type of … are you?”quizzes and you may have reacted like I usually do: You ignore them because they are rubbish, or you do one of them just for fun and then laugh at the result.
If you’re not on facebook you may not have even seen these tests, but they can be accessed by anybody. It’s just that they would like you to share on facebook, which, of course, you can ignore, like I usually do.
Anyway, what does thi...
