My visit to the Language Show Live 2016

On Saturday I wentto London again for my annual visit to the Language Show. My first impressions were not very positive. There weren’t as many exhibitors as before and it seemed there weren’t as many visitors either. Also, exhibitors had fewer German resources again. “German? No, we haven’t got our … in German.” And yet, multilingualvacancies.comtold me that in comparison to other languages there is a [...]

German for horse lovers

This post has been written for anybody who loves horse riding and is learning German. The idea came after a discussion with a student who told me about his forthcoming stay at a language school in Germany and his intention to go horse riding while there. I have to admit I know absolutely nothing about horses (except that they are huge animals on four legs ), so [...]

Help, I don’t know when to use im, am or um!

Im, am, um – three little words that can cause so much trouble. I often hear students use the wrong wordwhen they need to use one of the prepositions in (in+dem=im), an (an+dem=am) and um (um+dem=um) when they are used for time expressions. So I made this infographic which I hope will help a bit. To recap: We use “im” when we talk about seasons or [...]

German dialects – Berlinerisch

Berlinerisch, or Berliner Schnauze, as it’s also lovingly called, is our last post about themiddle German dialects. As the name says, Berlinerisch is spoken in Berlin. Anybody learning German who is struggling with the pronunciation of the ‘ch’ in ‘ich’ will love the Berlin dialect, because they say ‘ick’. I can almost hear you sigh and think ‘Why can’t they say this in all of Germany …’ But [...]

How to spell your email address in German

When you start learning German you will come across the alphabet in oneof the first lessons and you most likely practise spelling your names or maybe the places you come from. But what if you want to say your email address in German and have to spell it? You may start by saying “meine E-Mail-Adresse ist …..” and then you remember the @ sign and the hyphen [...]

Learn German with FlashAcademy – a review

When I went to the Language Show threeyears ago I came across this new company FlashSticks. I was so impressed with their product that I wrote a blog post about it. At the same time I did wonder what else they would be able to sell. I mean, there is only so much you can write on a post-it note. So I’ve been following their success [...]

Have fun learning German with stories from Janosch

Some of my students know that I love the children’s book from Janosch. I particularlylike using them when we cover the imperfect tense. But they are also just great stories. So, if you, like me, like German children’s books,or want to enjoy great German children’s books with your children (or grandchildren), let me tell you what is available, even if you don’t live in Germany. Lots of his [...]

How to pronounce German words with ‘ei’ and ‘ie’

Unlike the chap in the video, I have not come across anybody who had problems saying “ich liebe Sie”, but sometimesmy students struggle with the pronunciation of German nouns with ‘ie’ and ‘ei’ and they often mix them up. And yet, there are twovery easy tricks for English speakers. Both are pronounced like the last of those two letters in English. 1.The German letter combination of e+i is [...]
