The Middleburg Film Festival had an outstanding line-up of films, many with filmmakers present to answer questions. But unquestionably the highlight of the festival was the concert tribute to composer Henry Jackman. Middleburg is unique in its annual recognition of film scores with its Distinguished Film Composer award, and they do it right. The

Carol Burnett is Coming Back to TV!
Carol Burnett has announced a return to series television. And it gets better -- she will appear in a sitcom created by Amy Poehler. In presenting Burnett with a SAG award, Poehler and Tina Fey were speaking from the heart when they explained how much she had influenced and inspired them both. We don't know anything about the show's premise or other cast members, but we do know it has a contractual guarantee to be aired (rare for a pilot). Can't wait....

American Pastoral
Ewan McGregor's first film as a director is "American Pastoral," based on Philip Roth's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about a man whose good and lucky life is torn apart by the upheavals of the 1960's. It is a thoughtful and diligent effort, but the film cannot overcome two insurmountable problems of adaptation.
The first is the timing. The book was published in 1997, the first of Roth's American trilogy, and it described the contemporary experience of...

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
Tom Cruise is back in a second "Jack Reacher" movie, based on the hard-boiled series by Lee Child. Jack Reacher is a quintessential and perfectly named fantasy action hero -- former military but resistant to authority, capable of instant assessment of threats and options, crackerjack fighting skills, and no strings of any kind. He has no home, no family, no ID other than an expired military card, no car, no bank account, no possessions, just a passion for...

Gotham Awards 2016 — Nominations
The movie awards season officially begins with the announcement of the nominations for the Gotham awards. While not all of the awards contenders are out yet (I'm expecting to see "La La Land" and "Fences" do well), this is a good indicator of the direction we are likely to see this year. I was especially happy to see one of my favorites of the year, "Everybody Wants Some!!" on the list, and the special ensemble award for the extraordinary cast of "Moonlight."
