This Latest Publishing Disaster

Reblogged from Tricia Drammeh:

I recently advised authors not to blog when they're angry, but as usual, I'm going to ignore my own advice and do what I want. Today, I'm blogging when I'm spitting mad. Furious.

By now, I'm sure you're all familiar with many of the sordid details of my publishing experiences with a small press. Well, guess what? The story gets worse...

Read more… 732 more words

This is such an awful situation for Tricia. Please read and share this. Everyone needs to be aware of this awful situation

The Seance by Tricia Drammeh

In anticipation of the October release of Tricia Drammeh’s young adult paranormal novel, The Seance, we’ve got a fun giveaway in store for you. It’s easy to enter and completely free. Entry is as simple as liking a few Facebook Pages. For 10 extra entries, visit the Honeyshadow Premade Cover website and select the cover you think Tricia chose for her book. On August 10th, we’ll reveal the cover and the winners of the giveaway.

What’s The Seance about? Here’s a hint:

Ninth grade can be a nightmare when you don’t fit in at school, your crush chooses someone else, and your parents tell you they’re having a new baby. Abby was prepared for normal high school problems. She wasn’t prepared for a demon.

Abby has always been fascinated by the paranormal, but after an ill-fated séance, she discovers not all Spirits are benign. A dark entity unleashed during the summoning sets out to destroy Abby, and within days, she loses her best friend, incurs the wrath of her parents, and becomes a prisoner in her own home. With time quickly running out, she assembles an unlikely group of helpers: the most hated guy in school, a retired psychic, and the cute clerk from her favorite bookstore. Unless the demon is defeated, Abby and her new baby brother won’t stand a chance.

Spotlight on “Out and About: My Mother’s Story” by director/ writer Nicholas James Dodd

I worked with Nick earlier this year in a campaign for my previous call center company. We talked a lot about our dreams, our lives and what mattered the most to us. I have to say from those few weeks of getting to know Nick, I learned that he is a very driven and thoughtful guy who really loves his family. Nick talked a lot about his wife and child, but he also talked a lot about how much he admired his mom. See, his mom is a lesbian and had to go through a lot before accepting who she was and was able to come out and finally be okay with who she is. Recently, Nick’s mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since then, he has decided to embark on a journey to create a documentary highlighting her life and her struggles. I asked Nick what really inspired this idea and he very simply put “…I would say that telling the story of my family’s endeavors(with my mom being the focus of course), I have wanted to share the story through this means for a couple of years now. It is with her recent diagnosis that made me want to do it even more, and with seeing how sick she has become VERY recently, it made me want to do whatever was necesary to make it happen.”

Here is the video Nick posted on indiegogo.

Come on, people! There are only 43 days left to get this project funded. Every dollar helps.

Your New Book Cover: A Guide for the first time Self Publishing Author

So you’ve written your book. You knew from the get go you wanted to do everything yourself, and that’s awesome, I’ve been there. You have every character getting from Point A to Point B and you just know that you’re going to be the next Stephen King or J. K. Rowling. You’re on top of the world.

But there is a very important factor you might have forgotten. It may have been something you looked in to, got overwhelmed and decided you would come back to it later. It’s the first thing that says everything about your book. That’s right, ladies and gentlemen… The Cover

Now, I know that some of you have already probably started the search for a good cover and probably haven’t found a good artist yet. On the other hand you might have found the artist you want to work with, but now you have to save up your pennies. Well, I may have a solution to all of your problems.

As most of you that have been following my blog know, Tori was the one who actually found our cover artist. After an exhausting and nearly fruitless search, we were ready to turn to Photoshop and make our own covers. Then, like a beacon in the night sky, she came across a website that has become one of our favorite places (and run by one of my favorite people) truenotdreams designs. The site is run by Skylar Faith and is one of the most beautifully designed and most professionally run Cover Design sites on the web. Skylar has been quick with responses, addressed every concern, and made me feel like I was appreciated. We even inspired Tricia to work with Skylar for the redesign of her book, The Claiming Words.

In case you have forgotten, here is the amazing work that Skylar did for me:

The Night Touched_draft_06 Jeremy - eBook Cover

She has also done amazing banners, character posters, and other features for me. Her packages are being put together and the page is coming soon to her site. Skylar had the most affordable custom covers and provided products of the utmost quality. She allowed me to make installment payments, but that is on an individual basis.

On the other end of the spectrum, you might not have exactly what you want figured out in your head and you need a little help. Well, my friend, a premade cover might be the way for you to go. For a majority of self published authors,  premade covers are an affordable alternative to the custom made route. For the purpose of this post, I was searching around the internet for a site that I felt would help emphasize this post. That’s when Tricia told me about this fairly new premade site that she featured recently on Authors to Watch called Honeyshadow Designs. Now I checked them out and I have to say that I am impressed. They feature well made, affordable premade covers.

Here are a couple of the image from their site:

Now, I haven’t had any contact with the artists from this site, but I definitely have to commend them. This is a fledgeling site that even does premade PRINT covers! I thought that was pretty awesome.

Keep in mind that these are just a couple sites on opposite ends of the spectrum. There are a bunch of great sites that have pretty awesome covers, I just don’t have enough time or energy to post about all of them. Don’t take my word for it, though. Google is a powerful tool. Like I said, there are a LOT of great designers out there, I was really looking at affordability v. quality and I think that for both of these categories, truenotdreams and Honeyshadow exceeded my expectations for quality while staying in my range for price.

I hope that you found this to be at least a little helpful. Thank you guys for continuing to follow me. If you would like more posts like this, please be sure to leave me a comment.

For a Good Cause

Some of you might not know this, but I am well in to my 2nd year of being in remission from cervical cancer. While I am one of the lucky ones, I know far too many people who are still fighting this battle and too many people that have lost. I made a decision that I hope all of you will support. As you know, autographed copies of Celine are being sold on here for $10 (just follow the link on the right side of the page.) I have decided that from this point forward I am donating proceeds from every autographed copy sold to the American Cancer Society. It is an amazing cause that I hope at least some of you will support.

If you would rather just donate directly to either my personal donation page or the American Cancer Society donation page just follow one of the links. Thank you guys

M.
