Theft is not a higher form of flattery

In the age of ebooks and torrent downloads, I guess its possible to measure the popularity of your novel by how many times it's stolen. Over the weekend, over a dozen torrent sites popped up with illegal copies of Black Hole Sun. The book is being downloaded faster than Rotarians have pop down a stack of pancakes. The difference is, the Rotarians paid for the pancakes.

Most of the reviews of Black Hole Sun have been overwhelmingly positive and almost to the one, they have asked for a...

Launch!

It's official. Black Hole Sun has launched and is ready to "rocket readers to new frontiers." It's hard to believe that twenty months have passed since I emailed a logline to my editor and she told me to go for it. A lot of hard work has gone into making the beautiful book (the cover shimmers), most of it not mine. To celebrate, I'm going to do what every YA fan in the world seems to be doing tomorrow—buying a copy of Mockingjay and settling in to find out how a girl from the Seam conquers a...

Mock Black Hole Sun Trailer

Yesterday, I needed a break from paperwork, so I threw together a little book trailer to celebrate Black Hole Sun's success on Mars.

The New Podcast Is Here!

In a move that surely shows their ability to misjudge my ability to speak coherently, HarperTeen has released a podcast of me talking about Black Hole Sun and reading from Chapter Zero of Black Hole Sun (you can here other HarperCollins talk shop at http://harperteen.com/contests/podcast/).  I had a great time doing the reading 'cause I got to speak cannibal!

Redux: What Deadliest Catch Teaches About Fiction

Because it's less than two weeks until the launch of Black Hole Sun, I thought it would be fun to revisit some old blog posts.  I've been blogging about writing since 2004ish, and it's interesting–if not embarassing–to read some of the things I wrote before. Today's blog redux is a post about one of my favorite shows (RIP Captain Phil).

The Discovery Channel has a show I'm sure you've seen or heard about, Deadliest Catch. It's a running series about a fleet of real-life crabbers working the...

Redux: You're Not Half as Ugly as the Other People Here

Because it's less than two weeks until the launch of Black Hole Sun, I thought it would be fun to revisit some old blog posts.  I've been blogging about writing since 2004ish, and it's interesting–if not embarrassing–to read some of the things I wrote before. Today's blog redux is a post about the novel that would become Soul Enchilada. It was about 45k in length at this point but would grow to over 90k words. It's the last time I would write short and add, instead of writing long and...

Redux: Tell Me Lies, Sweet Little Lies Tell Me Lies, Sweet Little Lies

Because it's less than two weeks until the launch of Black Hole Sun, I thought it would be fun to revisit some old blog posts.  I've been blogging about writing since 2004ish, and it's interesting–if not embarassing–to read some of the things I wrote before. Today's blog redux is a meme from Feb. 2007 that I liked.

Redux: Here, Smell It!

Because it's less than two weeks until the launch of Black Hole Sun, I thought it would be fun to revisit some old blog posts.  I've been blogging about writing since 2004ish, and it's interesting–if not embarassing–to read some of the things I wrote before.Today's blog redux is a post about moldy cheese and character building.

My DW and I just finished cleaning the fridge. It had been accumulating leftovers and almost-empty condiment bottles since before Christmas, and because it was...
