Talking Reconstruction and Krampus with Matt Manochio, Author of SENTINELS and THE DARK SERVANT

Matt Manochio hit the horror scene with last year’s debut, The Dark Servant. That wonderful little Krampus tale warmed our bloody hearts and got us hip to this up and comer. Now, here at the tale end of 2015, Manochio is unleashing his next novel, a historical horror story called, Sentinels, and he’s following that up with a Christmas treat–his first novella, Twelfth Krampus Night.

I’m excited to catch up with this wonderful author any chance I get. He’s motivated, he’s determined, and he’s a pretty darn nice guy.

Glenn Rolfe: Nice to talk with you again. How have you been?

Matt Manochio: Hi Glenn! I’ve been busy with life stuff over actually writing. And that leads me and you to your next question.

GR: I know you’ve been through some personal stuff in the last year, how has that impacted your writing life?

MM: What the hell is this personally invasive inquisition?! I’m kidding. It’s totally cool. I got divorced in the last year (a very amicable one, my ex and I are on awesome terms) and that sort of sapped my desire to write (especially over the summer) because I was so focused on other things. I know many people might throw themselves into writing as a distraction or to serve as an outlet when something like this happens. I admire those who can accomplish that, but I can’t. However, I can say that I’ve fired up the jets, so to speak, and am about 5,000 words into my next book. So I’m really just getting started with it. But it’s nice having that feeling again, that anticipatory feeling of sitting in front of the computer screen and going to town.

sentinels

GR: I’m reading your latest novel, Sentinels. Great, great cover, by the way. Really enjoying these characters. It takes place in the South just after the slaves were freed. That’s a great time period and choice of location for some natural tension in the story. Have you always been fascinated with that piece of history? What drove you to choose that era?

MM: I was a history major in college, and quite truthfully, the period of history that most interests me is WWII and not the American Civil War, the latter of which served as a perfect backdrop for Sentinels. So I started with very little knowledge of the period immediately following the Civil War. You hear about the Reconstruction Era, but not many people really know how horrendous it was. It birthed the Ku Klux Klan, and saw terrible violence by lawmen against freed slaves. I had no idea Northern soldiers were stationed in the South to keep peace (it makes perfect sense, but it’s not something I automatically thought about). It was that discovery that led me to having both Klansmen and Northern soldiers being massacred by some mysterious force.

GR: I was reading this at work and one of my co-workers asked what it was about. I told her the setup and she just stood there enthralled. She demanded that I tell her what happens and how it all plays out. That was pretty cool. Usually, when she asks what I’m reading and I start spouting off about ghosts and goblins and werewolves, she shakes her head and is gone before I can finish. That says something to me. There’s more to Sentinels than just another horror story. Would you say that’s accurate?

MM: 100%. There’s certainly a supernatural element involved, but the story largely revolves around the choices the human characters make. I became a father a little before I wrote Sentinels, and the theme throughout the book is what good people might do to protect his loved ones.

GR: You also wrote The Dark Servant for Samhain Publishing last year. And now there’s a Krampus movie coming to theaters! Was that cool to see or is it frustrating?

MM: Anything that spreads the Word of Krampus is a good thing. I’m curious to see the movie, and I know Kevin Smith of Clerks fame is supposedly working on one too. As far as books, there still really isn’t much out there, but I also expect that to change too as more people learn about the big lug.

twelfth-krampus-night

GR: And of course you have next month’s novella, Twelfth Krampus Night. Was it fun dipping back into that world and can you see yourself going back for another merry round?

MM: Yes. I fibbed a little before, I actually wrote Twelfth Krampus Night during the first three months of 2015 while dealing with the aforementioned personal issues. But at the time, things hadn’t reached the point where we knew we were heading for divorce. So I can say I was able to throw myself into the book, and it felt wonderful because I thoroughly enjoy the character, and the other dark servants that are out there. I introduce a hag named Frau Perchta, who punishes bad kids around Twelfth Night by slitting open their bellies. The good kids get a coin in the shoe. Perchta certainly isn’t as well known as Krampus, but she has her own legend in Europe, so I was able to have some fun with that.

GR: For the folks out there that don’t know, which I’m assuming is many, we’re sharing a table at this year’s Scares That Care Horror Convention. Looking forward to that. What makes that Con so attractive to you?

MM: I’ve heard that Scares that Cares is THE convention where you can sell books. And that’s what I want to do. Many of our Samhain colleagues have gone there and had success, and I’m hoping we can too. I’ll have The Dark Servant and Sentinels for sale, and I can’t wait.

GR: Last thing, our publisher is going through changes…what’s your plan for 2016? Any new pieces in the works? Any stories already out there in the submission box? Or are you going to sit back and take some time off to see where it all shakes out?

MM: Even before Samhain began going through its changes I’d made up my mind to submit elsewhere, not because I’m not happy with Samhain Publishing—they’ve been great to me, and I wouldn’t yet rule out submitting to them again. But you can’t put all your eggs in one basket in this industry, especially when you’re starting out. So, yes, I’m firing up the engines on a vampire book (how original). But I hope this one will be. One thing is for certain: my vampires are not sexy and aren’t friends with shirtless werewolves who can’t act. My vampires will be bad in ways that go beyond blood sucking, count on it! The goal is to finish that book this upcoming year and submit toward the end of it.

GR: Thanks for chatting, man. Maybe I’ll see you in Cincinnati.

MM: That’d be great, Glenn. We gotta pick our convention battles because we don’t have Stephen King’s travel budget, but I loved going to HorrorHound in Cincinnati last year and am looking forward to going again this March.

Sentinels, Synopsis

These are no ordinary killers.

They don’t distinguish between good and evil. They just kill. South Carolina’s a ruthless place after the Civil War. And when Sheriff’s Deputy Noah Chandler finds seven Ku Klux Klansmen and two Northern soldiers massacred along a road, he cannot imagine who would murder these two diametrically opposed forces.

When a surviving Klansman babbles about wraiths, and is later murdered inside a heavily guarded jail cell, Noah realizes something sinister stalks his town. He believes a freed slave who’s trying to protect his farm from a merciless land baron can help unmask the killers. Soon Noah will have to personally confront the things good men must do to protect their loved ones from evil.

New Plans and Hope for 2016. Plenty of Cool on the Way!

Hey guys!  I know I posted about my tentative release schedule for 2016 a few months ago…since them a few things have changed.

The Samhain Publishing/ Don D’Auria split.

I love Don and wish he was still with the company, but things happen. Companies have the right to make whatever changes they see fit.  The way it went down could have been handled better on all ends, but  now, it is what it is. Let’s move forward. I know Don and his reputation and his track record in the horror genre will find him in a better place sooner than later. I hope to work with him again wherever that is.

As for Samhain, I’m also excited to see what 2016 and these new changes brings. We have a great new editor. I just finished collaborating with her on the edits for my next Samhain piece, the novella, THINGS WE FEAR. If you are worried about what the final product is going to look like under a new editor…don’t. We are in very capable hands.

I look forward to working with the company on my November 2016, the reprint of my first novel, The Haunted Halls.

As for the future…I will stay on with Samhain in an author relations role.  I enjoy helping my fellow stablemate out in any way that I can. Don gave me his blessing to do so, and I intend on making sure his “chosen” are well tended to.

I won’t waste my time or energy on any of the negative vibes that came after the company/editor split, and neither should you. Let’s keep it on the Pos and walk on.

Here’s my plan for 2016 (as of this moment):

I have THINGS WE FEAR (novella) in March with Samhain.

ThingsWeFear (2)

I have WHERE NIGHTMARES BEGIN (novella collection featuring Abram’s Bridge, Boom Town and Things We Fear) also in March with Samhain.

WhereNightmaresBegin

I Have THE HAUNTED HALLS (reprint 1st novel) in November with Samhain, as well.

I have a finished novella, THE LAST SHOW. Not sure where it will come out. It is sitting with a publisher right now, so I hope to have news on that in the next couple of months.

My next new novel, WINDOW, is nearly complete, but I will be holding onto that one while I set to work on my next big project…

That brings me to the next collection. I haven’t decided on a title for it yet (it was World Coming Down-it may still be).

Here’s what I know. I want this collection to bury SLUSH . I loved that collection, but i intend for this one to be EPIC. I will be including at least two new novellas in the collection along with a variety of horror and sci-fi-tinged short stories. This one should wind up twice the size of SLUSH.

I will keep you posted on the progress.

So…expect to see the above mentioned Samhain titles and the collection in 2016.

WINDOW, THE LAST SHOW, and my other novel, BECOMING, may not make it out there until 2017. But that’s more than okay.  I want them to be the best possible pieces I can create, so there really is no rush.

Oh, and if this Guns N’ Roses Reunion tour happens?  I’ll be too distracted to work.

Staying Positive: My recent guest post over at The Horror Bookshelf blog.

Power-of-positive-thinking

“Staying Positive”

Positivity breeds positivity. That mantra can get a writer through many situations big and small. It helps you keep the belief and faith, even when you hit a wall, that your story will tell you where it wants to go and how you plan to go about getting the finished draft published. Not everyone is going to get your story or love that you wrote a werewolf story without leaving the werewolf’s identity a mystery. You will get rejected, but if you have written the story you wanted to write (which, it most certainly should be if you’re submitting it) you must have faith that your baby will be adopted and find a home.

Tomorrow, Annie… the sun will come out tomorrow.

Another place where staying positive comes into play is in promoting yourself and others in your genre/field.

Boom Town in Audio Book and My Barnes and Noble Signing for Blood and Rain.

23715851

Last week, AudioRealms Publishing released my horror/sci-fi novella, Boom TownTo celebrate horror week, Audio Realms is selling ALL horror titles at half-price! If audio books are your bag, grab a few titles today!

Lesley Ann Fogle handles the audio for Boom Town and she really knocks it out of the park. Listen for yourself! Grab Boom Town for just $3.99

Terror from below!

In the summer of 1979, Eckert, Wisconsin, was the sight of the most unique UFO encounter in history. A young couple observed a saucer-like aircraft hovering over Hollers Hill. A blue beam blasted down from the center of the craft into the hill and caused the ground to rumble for miles.

Now, thirty years later, Eckert is experiencing nightly rumbles that stir up wild rumors and garner outside attention. The earthly tremors are being blamed on everything from earthquakes to underground earth dwellers. Two pre-teens discover a pipe out behind Packard’s Flea Market uprooted by the “booms” and come into contact with the powerful ooze bubbling from within. What begins as curiosity will end in an afternoon of unbridled terror for the entire town.

This past Saturday I did my first official solo signing at Barnes and Noble in Augusta, Maine. I was nervous as hell Saturday morning (I tried to relax by watching Monster Squad-great flick!). Armed with my Wolf Man action figure, dressed in black from head-to-toe (like Johnny Cash), I arrived at the store to see my face on either side of the entrance just as you entered the front doors. Pretty cool.   My table was just off to the right and loaded up with copies of Blood and Rain.  A number of friends and family showed up to support me. Thank you all so much! I met a lot of cool folks, talked to an elderly man who asked me the same five questions about six different times . He was obviously ill, but he gave my oldest daughter a dollar for helping me try to sell books! He was very nice and my daughter acted like she’d  won the lottery. It was great.

I ended up selling out by 1:30.  The event was scheduled until 2! It was so much fun, and I was happy to see some folks I hadn’t spoken with in some time. Great turn out, great results, and I was told by on-duty manager of the store that we will definitely be doing it again when the next book drops.  That would be my novella collection, Where Nightmares Begin (coming March 2016).

Thank you to everyone who made it out! And thank you so very much for spending you Saturday and with me. You made this scribbler feel good.

Blood and Rain Publicity Tour Strikes my Home Turf! Radio Appearances and my First Ever Barnes and Noble Book Signing!

2015 has been busy! I rocked the GoodReads and blog worlds promoting the heck out of my two Samhain Publishing novellas (Abram’s Bridge and Boom Town) and had a bit of a breather.

Until now.

With Blood and Rain being my first novel and print book for Samhain, I knew I needed to kick it up a notch. The latest Blog Tour is under way, but this weekend brings that next level mentality: Radio appearances and…A Barnes and Noble Book Signing Event!

Walking into the Barnes and Noble I have frequented since I was in high school and seeing a giant sign with my name, face, and the cover of my book on it was amazing.

BN sign

Follow that up with finding copies of my book on the actual shelf?

My daughter is beaming with pride. My daughter is beaming with pride.

I’m ready to shut my mouth. Too cool.

Friday morning I stopped into the local pop station here in central Maine, 92 Moose, to do an on-air interview with long time morning man extraordinaire, Jon James.

me and JJ

They also had me on over at the country station, B 98.5  So nice to meet everyone and feel the genuine enthusiasm for my accomplishments. I hope I do you guys proud!

The 92 Moose interview can be seen and heard HERE

Tomorrow is the big day. From Noon until 2PM I will be signing copies of Blood and Rain, making friends,  and hopefully making some sales.

I even invited Stephen King.  :)   Not sure if he got my message, but what the hell.

I hope to see some of you out there tomorrow.  Come say hi and grab a copy of the book. It really is a great Halloween read. Don’t just take my word for it…..Here’s what the people say:

“With slashing claws and blood-soaked fur, Glenn Rolfe’s novel will have you howling in terror and delight. A welcome addition to the werewolf mythos and proof that we’re in the presence of a rising star in the genre. Highly recommended!”–Ronald Malfi, author of December Park and Little Girls

“A major new talent rises from the Maine woods…Rolfe is the real deal, and Blood and Rain is a classic monster novel, full of blood and teeth and the kind of razor sharp writing that makes the pages sing. Small town horror is back, with a vengeance!”–Nate Kenyon, award-winning author of Sparrow Rock, Diablo: Storm of Light and Day One

“Many authors nowadays get lauded for writing ‘throwback’ horror fiction, but none of them quite goes the distance like Rolfe does in Blood and Rain. Werewolves, silver samurai swords, and small New England towns: it all makes you wish this was twenty years ago so you can take the paperback off a supermarket spinner-rack and huff the yellowed pages.” – Adam Cesare, author of Mercy House and Exponential

“Brutal, tension-fueled and captivating…Blood and Rain is the best werewolf novel I’ve read since Jeff Strand’s Wolf Hunt.” — Horror After Dark

“Blood and Rain is a monumental piece of horror fiction.”-Horror Underground

“(Rolfe) takes his writing cues form Richard Laymon, Jack Ketchum, with some haunts thrown in via the eerie style of Ronald Malfi.” —Oh, For the Hook of a Book

“A howling good read for werewolf fans.” – Scott Nicholson, The Red Church

“This is werewolves as they should be.”-Scarlet’s Web

“Wow! Easily one of the best werewolf books I’ve ever read.”- Hunter Shea, author The Montauk Monster and The Dover Demon

My Review of Hunter Shea’s Latest, The Dover Demon!

the-dover-demon

Hunter Shea takes on the Dover Demon. This crytid was seen in Massachusetts and hasn’t been documented as much as some of the others in its cryptozoology family like the Jersey Devil or the Mothman. This opens up the doors for Shea to create his own story of who or what the Dover Demon is.

Four friends (Sam, Chris, Kelly, and Stephanie) driving home from a movie in 1977 come upon a creature in the road. What they witness alters their paths forever. Fast forward to present day. We find one friend, Kelly, has refused to let that night go. The others have moved on, sort of. When Sam’s son, Nicky, goes out in search of the hometown cryptid, he and his friend find far more than the set out to discover. The Dover Demon is real…and it is far from alone.

There’s so much to love about this book. Having spoken to the author on a number of occasions, I know he’s had an “extra-terrestrial” experience in his past. He wasn’t taken and probed (as far as he knows), but he and some friends witnessed a UFO in the sky. I know that personal piece is the starting point of Mr. Shea’s The Dover Demon.

Having a love for alien-type tales myself, I got caught up in the story instantly. Shea is also extremely good at creating characters for you to latch onto quickly. Sam and Nicky’s life take a hit early on in this one without any help from Sam’s past brush with the Demon. When Sam comes home to find his wife…man, I was through the roof with him.

The story takes a sharp turn into the Demon’s world (below the ground) and winds you through a hazy, round and round maze that sent me totally off balance.

When the answers start to come through and you see the bigger picture, the story reaches its potential.  A fantastic conclusion.

Outside of being a little confused in the midst of the underground runaround, I found The Dover Demon to be an enjoyable experience. Another fun one from Hunter Shea.

A trip Hunter Shea made to the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine two years ago sparked the idea for THE DOVER DEMON. While he was there, he met famed cryptozoologist, Loren Coleman and talked about creatures he’s personally investigated. It turns out, he was the man on the scene in Dover, MA in the late 70s when the uber strange biped was spotted by several people over the course of two nights in April, Hunter reported. He also gave it its name, Dover Demon.

Now, Hunter’s fictional world of The Dover Demon has been published as a novel and he was able to go back to the museum of cryptids in August and have a launch party for the book with Loren Coleman! Blood and Rain is definitely a contender to be the best horror novel of the year.”–The Examiner.com

HorrorHound Weekend Rewind!

I was lucky to be among the Samhain Horror authors to attend HorrorHound Weekend in Indianapolis, recently.  It was great to hang out with all my Samhain buds (Samhain Office peeps included!) and sign and sell copies of my debut novel for the company, Blood and Rain.

I was stationed next to the fantastic Jonathan Janz and Keith Ferrario. We were joined this year by regulars, Russell James, Mick Ridgewell, Brian Pinkerton, and John Everson, and with newer guys, Matt Manochio, Brian Kirk, and Vic Kerry. Each of these guys are awesome in their own way.

Big thanks to everyone who made it out to see us and went home with brand new books!

I did some singing under an overpass. Arby’s with Keith Ferrario. “Falsetto” with the incomparable Vic Kerry, coffee with Matt Manochio, wrestling talks with Brian Kirk, and pretty much made a bunch of new best friends….here’s some pics!

Embarrassed to say this is how I showed up: like a homeless man! Sorry Russell! Embarrassed to say this is how I showed up: like a homeless man! Sorry, Russell!

Even Even “Homeless” Glenn can put it together for a promo…
