(A Writer’s Corner) A Shiny Star is Not the End…

Over the course of my relatively short writing career, I’ve noticed varying reactions from writers you and old,  new and well-worn, when it comes to that truly horrifying thing – the 1-Star Review  Duh-duh-daaaahh!!!

What you really should be concerned with just how many you have for any given piece of work. Trust me, we all get them. There is absolutely no way to please everyone. And you won’t. You’re not that special. I mean it. I’m not being a dick, I’m just sayin’,  everyone that writes and releases their books to the public will have a number of people that do not get it, do not like it, do not want it near anyone that they care about….seriously.

For newbies, this first low rating/bad review can be devastating. It doesn’t have t be. Just consider it another of those  “Welcome to the Club” moments. Honestly, this is the age of back-pats, coddles, friends and family reviews, and many other nefarious review sorcery. If you’re actively seeking reviews (which I think everyone promoting their work should be doing), you’re gonna ruin someone’s week with your writing. And if you do have a bunch of people cheering your work, you might still be knocked silly by that one bad apple. Don’t let it ruin you.

Now, to be fair, we do live in that nefarious review sorcery world…sometimes, you will get blasted by a troll. Someone who is sick of the good reviews, doesn’t like your online persona, or really, really didn’t like that your characters listened to Poison, Skid Row, and Pretty Boy Floyd.  If you’ve been trolled, take it as a compliment. You’re important enough to irritate someone so much they attack you.  Good for you!

As for me, I take the good reviews with the bad.  Check this one out:

did not like it

I was very disappointed. There are many better options out there for this genre. Don’t waste your time.

Writing style is amateurish and simple. Very poorly done. Save your money and find a better option. Written by a middle schooler…

See?  Kimberly judo-chopped me pretty good.  Did it sting? I’d be lying if I said it didn’t, but I didn’t let it bug me for long. I just rolled with it. You can’t please them all.

Plus, I have enough good or okay reviews that it makes ones like these easier to shrug off. And so will you.

Keep your chin up, roll with it, and don’t let the bastards grind you down.

I do have a number of these fine reviews. Including one from a reviewer who read, like, eight pages and 1-starred me.  I’m just telling you that it’s gonna happen.  Feel the pain, then move forward.

And if you have weaknesses in your writing (and we all do), don’t be afraid to reexamine some of the things the lower-starred reviewers point out. They might help you correct them in your current or future work.

I believe in you.

Keep writing!

(Review) THOSE WHO FOLLOW by Michelle Garza & Melissa Lason

A WAYFARING STRANGER

Tormented by visions of women imprisoned in the middle of a barren wasteland and an old man with a yellow-toothed grin, Casey has been wandering this country’s highways following a song that she believes will lead her to her other self.

A CHURCH IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE

Held captive in a desecrated shrine, Celia would have given up long ago if not for a song that keeps her hope burning. Someday she will escape from the shadowy creatures that claw at the windows of the church, the monstrous dog with a taste for human flesh, and the old preacher with inhuman powers.

A BOND THAT CROSSES WORLDS

Two women divided by fate but connected by blood. Will the song help them lead the way to each other and defeat the forces aligned against them? Or will they suffer the dreadful fate of…

THOSE WHO FOLLOW

My Review:

Those Who FollowThose Who Follow by Michelle Garza

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

THOSE WHO FOLLOW (Bloodshot Books) is the latest from Michelle Garza and Melissa Lason (aka the Sisters of Slaughter). After reading their debut, MAYAN BLUE (Sinister Grin Press), I knew I was in for another fun and horrific ride. I was right.

“Night crawled down the walls of Whispering Creek, dragging storm clouds along with it.”

THOSE WHO FOLLOW is a fantastically imagined horror novel that would have fit in great as a Leisure Books title. I love books like this that are original without trying too hard to be different. Garza and Lason know how to deliver the goods, and in THOSE WHO FOLLOW, they do so time and time again. There are some great prose to go along with the originality of the story, a factor that played a part in this duo being nominated for a Bram Stoker Award for their aforementioned debut.

“…tear-stained angels that would only find peace in death.”

The story has us following a number of different characters. Byron is the main antagonist (and he’s one loathsome son of a bitch). He’s a Wanderer. He has the ability to walk in our world and another. This is where he hides his victims (at least, the ones he doesn’t kill right off). Unbeknownst to his wife and brother, he’s been doing his wicked deeds and keeping prisoners in his “church” for decades. But things are about to change.

When Byron happens upon Celia, he thinks he’s got another young one to add to his stable. But Celia has a special gift, and it’s one that just might bring a stop to Byron’s reign of evil.

I won’t go into the whole story, since you want to read it for yourself. If you enjoy the novels of Richard Laymon and/or Bentley Little, I have a good feeling you’ll dig this one, too. I really enjoyed the ending. Lason and Garza know how to keep you on the edge of your seat. I could have done without the after ending part (although it was fun), I just didn’t think it was necessary. That said, this is still a hell of a read.

Overall, I give THOSE WHO FOLLOW 4 stars. Lots of good stuff in here, and definitely worthy of your time.

Praise for   Mayan Blue and Sisters of Slaughter

“From the outset, Garza and Lason let the blood spill, plunging their small cast of characters into the depths of Mayan hell. There’s plenty of action to go around as the group is confronted with a number of horrors, from the labyrinthine and booby-trapped maze of the newly discovered Mayan temple to the angry gods and their owl-headed, sharp-clawed servants.” –Michael Hicks, Author of Convergence

”These two show no quarter dragging the characters–and by extension, the reader–into the depths of the Mayan version of Hell. There’s vividness to the scenes they craft that made me want to make sure I was reading in full daylight, or at least with most of the lights on.” –John Quick, Author of Consequences

Writing Advice: Answering a Goodreads Question.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

My advice is to stay true to who you are. Tell the story that you want to tell. There are plenty of people who try to write to an audience or that try to write a story they think will sell. That might work for a bit, but you chance losing yourself, your voice.

Don’t get complacent. Don’t stick to one type of story. Push yourself, stretch out with each tale. If you’re not sure where a story is supposed to go, let the characters dictate the direction. What would they do next? They might lead you into a mystery or a science fiction tinged area. That’s okay. Even if you don’t usually go into those genres, let yourself try it out. You might be surprised at the results.

Example: I started out knowing that I wanted to write horror. My first completed draft was for a werewolf novel called, BLOOD AND RAIN. Lots of blood and rain and a lot of good gory fun. Next up, I wrote an evil hotel story called, THE HAUNTED HALLS. More blood, more guts, more stormy nights.  Then, I started a story about a ghost girl beneath a bridge. It was supposed to be a quick ghost story, but as I got into it, it began to go off in different directions. What was supposed to be eerie and spooky, took on a darker edge and opened into this small town mystery. I remember thinking, I’m not a mystery writer. I don’t know how to do that. BUT that’s the only direction that felt right. After a few hours of arguing with myself, I gave in and got back to the story. That was my novella, ABRAM’S BRIDGE. It caught the eye of the only editor I cared to work with , Don D’Auria, and landed me my first publishing contract with Samhain Publishing.

I followed novella up with a scary story that demanded to be horror and science fiction! Another road that I hadn’t traveled.  I pushed through and wound up with a contract for that one, too. (BOOM TOWN is now available as a bonus novella with my latest novel, BECOMING).

Don’t write for anyone but you. Remember that no one is watching you while you write that first draft. Let it go where it wants. And though you may be tempted to jump on a hot trope, or feel the desperate need to be super original, just remember to be true to you. YOU are what makes your stories special. Never forget that.

Good luck.–GR

SCARES THAT CARE 2017: BOOKS YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY PURCHASE

I was supposed to attend this year’s STC convention, but due to some miscalculations on my part, I had to cancel and stay home. I had a blast last year.  I’m sure my friends, who are arriving in Williamsburg as we speak, will carry the torch.

That said, I wanted to give you a list of books you should grab while you’re there. So here we go:

[image error]WE CAME BACK by Patrick Lacey

Patrick is one of the best new horror writers out there. This book is fantastic, and all of the proceeds are going to fight cancer in honor of his dad.  Win/win, make sure you help him sell every copy.

[image error] BONE WHITE by Ronald Malfi

Ron is my favorite author not named Stephen King. This book is out on the 25th, but Ron will have early copies for sale. I was lucky enough to get a copy a few weeks ago. This may be my pick for Novel of the Year.  My review is posted here on the site.

[image error]VICKI BEAUTIFUL by Somer Canon

This is a fun novella that was just twisted enough to stick with me after I read it. I’m sure Somer will have copies with her. I advise you to buy one.

EXORCIST FALLS by Jonathan Janz

This is a very wild ride. From the original and excellent novella (EXORCIST ROAD-which is included) to the thrilling follow-up, you can’t go wrong with this one. Plus, it has a really, really cool cover.

THE SUMMER JOB by Adam Cesare

I am this book’s biggest fan. A young lady needs an escape from the city. She takes a job at an inn and discovers there just might be a lot more going on in the country. For you eBook types, this one is on sale right now for 99 cents!  But grab the paperback if you’re at the convention.

BRAIN DEAD BLUES by Matt Hayward

This is Matt’s debut short story collection. I’m in the middle of this one as we speak–good stuff.  Matt is a cool ass Irish mofo that travels across the mighty sea to attend. Grab a copy of the book and make a new best friend.

Those are my top picks. You can also grab great books from Tim Meyer, Armand Rosamilia, Amber Fallon, Matt Manochio, Wrath James White, and Brian Keene (of course). I’m sure there are many other great authors in attendance that would love to make a new fan, too.

Travel safe, have some beers, pick up some new favorite reads, and make sure to have fun.

Maybe we’ll see you guys next year.

Cheers!

GR

(Review) BONE WHITE by Ronald Malfi

“Like it was something real. Something out there in the woods with claws.”

Every time I sit down with a Ronald Malfi book, I’m reminded of why I want to be a writer. He reminds me of the power in the art. How words can come together to evoke visions and stir feelings, how characters can become flesh and blood on the page, and how a story can work its way into your bones. We expect that as readers, but as a writer, when we see it done so well, it ignites within us the reason we’re doing this in the first place.

“Snowflakes, like little filaments of pillow stuffing, floated about the atmosphere without ever touching the ground.”

Malfi is the master of description, often giving us subtle lines that flow so effortlessly we ride their waves between actions and dialog, thoughts and observations, trusting he’ll bring us to shore. And when our feet touch sand, the story is there, impossible to ignore, forget, or escape.  In his latest effort, BONE WHITE, Malfi brings his entire bag of tricks and treats, delivering the kind of novel we (his fans) have come to expect.

“Despite the  shroudlike fog that blocked out the sun, the thing’s shadow stretched like black taffy along the pavement behind it.”

The story of twin brothers, Paul and Danny Gallo, and a small, mysterious Alaskan town (Dread’s Hand), BONE WHITE unfurls at a perfect pace, digging its claws in and never letting you go. Things get off to a bang when resident, Joe Mallory, reappears at the local diner after months away, and confesses to a slew of murders. Detective Jill Ryerson arrives on the scene, doubting the seriousness of Mallory’s claims, but finds out the man speaks the truth. Paul Gallo flies to Alaska (via Maryland) to see if his brother, Danny, is among the victims. From there, Paul finds himself in the Dread’s Hand, an unwanted stranger, asking too many questions and fumbling around in corner’s the town wants to keep dark.

BONE WHITE might be my pick for Novel of the Year, it’s that freaking good. My favorite Malfi book since his tremendous FLOATING STAIRCASE, BONE WHITE needs to be on your To Be Read list, whether you’re a horror fan or not.

I give BONE WHITE 5 stars!

(Review) BONE WHITE by Ronald Malfi

A landscape of frozen darkness punctuated by grim, gray days.

The feeling like a buzz in your teeth.

The scrape of bone on bone. . .

Paul Gallo saw the report on the news: a mass murderer leading police to his victims’ graves, in remote Dread’s Hand, Alaska.

It’s not even a town; more like the bad memory of a town. The same bit of wilderness where his twin brother went missing a year ago. As the bodies are exhumed, Paul travels to Alaska to get closure and put his grief to rest.

But the mystery is only beginning. What Paul finds are superstitious locals who talk of the devil stealing souls, and a line of wooden crosses to keep what’s in the woods from coming out. He finds no closure because no one can explain exactly what happened to Danny.

And the more he searches for answers, the more he finds himself becoming part of the mystery. . .

FREE eBook! Get my short story collection: SLUSH.

This is my first short story collection. It features many published and previously unpublished stories.  Get yours here: http://mybook.to/Slush

Praise for SLUSH

“Rolfe crafts a mesmerising and realistic set of tales that will haunt, scare, buoy you with joy, and take you back to a simpler time when life was yet to kick you in the balls. Not so much slush as lush, a fictional, twisted trip down memory lane. Essential.” – Stuart Keane, author of GRIN

“A collection of twelve dark and seductive dances. Once you pick up “Slush” you’ll be holding 126 pages of why you became a fan of Horror in the first place.”  – THE EYES OF MADNESS

“Speaking of fucked up and disgusting, let’s talk about “Henry”. Have you ever wanted to cut your zits off with a razor? Of course you haven’t! You aren’t a crazy bastard. At least you probably aren’t. Okay, shut up. The point is, “Henry” is pretty gross. Rolfe gets all the descriptions right on this one.” – Max Booth III, author of THE NIGHTLY DISEASE

“Glenn Rolfe is the type of author that is hard to forget. He creates the most vivid images I have read in a long time. Slush is the literary version of the term things that cannot be unseen. The usage of common fears grounds the book into a level of realism that is missing from most up and coming horror authors. Never afraid to take you into the darkest reaches of humanity, trust that Rolfe will always show you something new and interesting with each piece of work and Slush is a great example of that. This is the perfect book to keep you awake at night.” – HORROR UNDERGROUND

(Review) BONE CHIMES by Kristopher Rufty

A community where the mortgage is paid with blood. A man with an unhealthy devotion to his couch. A death machine that kills whoever its owner wants. A woman escapes one nightmare to find herself in another living hell. A boy learns more about his father than he ever wanted to know. Bone Chimes, the first collection from Kristopher Rufty, features nine demented tales, including The Night Everything Changed, the prelude to The Lurkers.

(This title is available in print, eBook, and for KINDLE UNLIMITED)

My Review:

Bone ChimesBone Chimes by Kristopher Rufty

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Short story collections tend to take me a while to get through. I like to read a few at a time, usually between books or novellas.

BONE CHIMES from Kristopher Rufty, a short-short story collection (9 in all), was a lot of fun. There is plenty of awesomeness. I had a great time with the overall collection.

My favorites:

“The Chomper”- A very Bentley Little -type tale of a couple who didn’t believe the fine print. In order to buy the house, a sacrifice must be made monthly. Great one. 5 stars

“Love Seat” I was not prepared for this one. A way out there story of a man and his special one….the love seat. Fucked up, but great. 5 stars

“Something Out There” A good werewolf story. 4 stars

“Black Garbage Bags” I loved this one, but felt like it should have end a few pages sooner. I didn’t like the ending. 4 stars

“Gearhart’s Wife” My favorite of the bunch. Starts off like a a nice, fan-meets-hero kind of story, then it gets to the fun, twisted part. One of the character’s names is Tobe, the director in the story (Gearhart) made a film called, “A Georgia Battle-Axe Massacre”–I was totally feeling the Hooper vibe from about the halfway point on. (Though in the notes, Rufty says it was inspired with a more John Carpenter deal in mind).

“The Night Everything Changed” This one was free forever at the Samhain site. Sadly, I never did get around to reading it, but it is good. Now I have to dig out THE LURKERS! 5 stars

The other couple of stories didn’t work so well for me, but the ones that did were fantastic.

Overall, I give BONE CHIMES 4 stars!

Kristopher Rufty lives in North Carolina with his wife, three children, and pets. He’s written numerous books, including The Vampire of Plainfield, Jagger, The Lurkers, The Skin Show, Pillowface, and more. If he goes more than two days without writing, he becomes very irritable and hard to be around, which is why he’s often sent to his desk without supper.

THE BLACK ROOM MANUSCRIPTS and more updates

Happy to share the cover for the next installment of The Sinister Horror Company’s THE BLACK ROOM MANUSCRIPTS.  I was super excited to get the invite for this one. The story I delivered, “Orson’s Gas n’ Go”, is my little tribute to Tobe Hooper. Psyched to see the roster here on the cover: Paul Tremblay, Adam Nevill, David Moody, Paul Kane, Michael Bray….pretty good group, right?

Not sure of the release day yet, so stay tuned!

Seeing this cover made my dropping off the SCARES THAT CARE convention a little easier.  Sadly, I had to make a financial decision to stay home this summer. I wish I could have come up with a way to be there, but life doesn’t always play by your rules.  I hope all my friends have a blast, and I will try to make it back soon (even if just for Scareyoke!).

I’m still hard at work on FOLLOW ME DOWN, WAITING FOR DARKNESS, and THE WINDOW. I’ll keep you posted on the progress.

Lastly, I just wanted to thank everyone that ordered print copies of BECOMING. Glad to see they all made it safely.  I also just got the new print edition of BLOOD AND RAIN up and ready to order. Jason Lynch’s new cover is amazing and this one is a beauty.

Joe Hempel will be doing the audio editions of both of these titles later this year.

I hope to have some more cool news in the couple of months. Stay tuned!
