TIME & AGAIN has arrived!

*cue music from 2001* It! Is! Here!

Time & Again began three years ago in Kyeli’s hands during the NaNoWriMo after her uterus escaped and before her arms stopped working. It was a way for her to cope with losing her dream to be a surrogate and having her womanhood challenged. But it languished unfinished until she could face the huge emotions it brought up for her.

After I publishedInkchanger, Kyeli asked me – very excited, but very nervous – if I would help her shape those 30 pages into the fu...

Time & Again cover reveal

Ooh, we’re almost there! Time & Again lands on Monday!

That’s only… *counts on toes* THIS MANY DAYS. *holds up fingers, realizes you can’t see her* Three. Three days!

And, just to tease your insatiable reading gullet, here’s the cover – designed by me, photographs by Kyeli (those are her toes. I counted on those, if I’m honest.)

Time and Again front and back covers

*waggles eyebrows* Sexy, right?

And here’s another quote-teaser. Because I’m evil.

It’s haunted me my entire life, like wondering if you left the back door open when you’r...

Write against the machine header

Yes. it’s that time again! We’ve got another episode ofWrite Against the Machinefor your earholes.

We like Melissa Dominic so much that we held her captive invited her back to talk about character development. I rag on her for not publishing her most interesting, touching character, and Mary tries to get us to explain how fictional people work.

Check it out right here.

In other news: This is the last of our banked recordings, and we decided that we’re going to up the pace! From now on, you’ll ge...

Wendy Davis, feminism, and allies as collateral damage

Texas Senator Wendy Davis filibusters SB5

Wendy Davis is a goddamn epic hero. She’s faced down one of the most aggressive legislatures in America and chose to abide by completely unreasonable rules of order to protect the power of choice. In a world where political and social apathy is spiking, she took a stand.

She went 13 hours without food and was attacked for adjusting her back brace when she wasn’t allowed to lean or sit. She endured verbal abuse from onlookers. She answered antagonistic questions with civility. Her motherfucking...

The Dancing Guy of Hamilton

I see this guy every couple of weeks near my house, just jammin’ to his headphones and kick-steppin’ it down the street like he hasn’t got a care in the world. We always called him The Dancing Cowboy; for a while, he wore a ten-gallon hat, leathers, and fancy boots. He’s a real person who lives in my town, a character that fell out of someone’s story and landed in Hamilton. It happens around here a lot more than you’d think. More than any other place I’ve ever lived in.

I just wanted to share...

{Summer Rewind} Express yourself! A letter to a blue-haired pixie

Hey, y’all! I’m on creative leave due to my hip surgery, so I’ve dug up some of my favourite posts to re-share. This one originally aired on January 1, 2013.

Girl with blue hair by lindseygee via Flickr

A darling reader wrote to me a few weeks ago on behalf of her daughter who is/was going through a hair crisis that sort of turned into a personal crisis. They start so young! I wound up writing a long letter about howIdealt with teasing and hair in high school, which I thought would be not only something fun to share with you guys, but a...

Write Against the Machine 08: Build the world you want to explore

Write against the machine header

Got a brand-spankin’ new podcast for y’all today!

This time, Mary and I interviewed Melissa Dominic, a mutual internet-friend who writes intense fucking stories and draws maps of places that don’t exist, about worldbuilding. (In fact, we interviewed hertwice- this is just the first half.)

In this podcast, we talk about the relationship between setting, characters, and plot, as well as gush about how much we love Pinterest for inspiration and how much I don’t understand speculative fiction and i...
