This review is from: My Wizard Buddy: (Juvenile Fiction) (Fantasy & Magic) (Kindle Edition)
I am a huge fan of YA and Juvenile Fiction. There is something special about the genres that I find absolutely enchanting. After reading the synopsis for this book, I was ready to jump in. What I found in the prose was a mixture of sheer magic, creativity, a bit of realism and an easy flow to the story. The authors have done something fun with this.

This story begins with a young boy, Tyler, who is alone and wishing for a friend. Out of nowhere, one appears. His name is Dirk. He looks like a normal eleven year old…except that he’s a wizard and comes from another planet. From there the story takes off and the reader is carried through many fast-paced adventures.

This book touches upon several different important topics. Sibling rivalry is one, bullying and popularity are others. It even touches on incredibly difficult things such as death and dysfunction within the family unit. Unfortunately these things are a part of a majority of kids’ lives, and I believe that readers will be able to relate to these things without feeling burdened by them as they read.

This book is light-hearted and smoothly written. It is a pleasing story packed full of adventure and humor. The heavier stuff is present but not overwhelming in any way. At the core of the tale is Tyler and his friendship with Dirk…and what a friendship it is.

The age level listed for this book is 6 – 15. I’m the parent of two children and a long time homeschooler. I have read a number of different series with each of my children and think that a more appropriate age group for this particular one would be closer to 7 – 13. Perhaps this shouldn’t be too great a discussion point, however. I’m a grown adult and found this story to be both entertaining and charming.

Oh my goodness… Oh no, just no!

Delusional by Scott Spotson

http://bookbuddiesph.blogspot.ca/2014/09/review-delusional-by-scott-spotson.html

Review:

GENERAL:

This book is a combination of psychological thriller and action thriller. There’s also a hint of romance thriller, if you know what I mean. (And yes, there’s a lot of different types of thrillers, they’re called sub-genres.) While I was reading this book, it makes my heart beat so fast like I was playing the role of the protagonist and it kept on the edge of my seat. Every chapter offers something and it’s really thrilling, in my opinion. I couldn’t expect what would happen next and that’s a great thing because it made me say things like;”Oh my goodness. Tell me that it did not happen.” “Oh no.JUST. NO.”

CHARACTER(S):

The characters are very much flawed and I love them all even though one was kind of evil (I wouldn’t tell you who since that’s what you need to find out!). Of all the characters, my favorite would be Jocelyn (AKA Joss), Patricia’s (the protagonist) best friend. I liked her because she proved herself as a really trustworthy friend and she never left Patricia’s side even though at some point she doubted Patricia’s delusions. As for Patricia, I liked her. She’s very independent and she’s the kind of woman who looks fragile on the outside but then she’ll surprise you with her strong personality. The other characters, Paul, Wendy, and Samantha are very much important in the story too. They all played an interesting role, actually.

PLOT AND WRITING STYLE:

The plot of this book was so amazing. There are two different plots in this book and they will eventually collide as the story progresses, which is so awesome! I couldn’t explain how I really feel. It’s just so amazing. It was really impressive. As for the writing style, it’s also great! This is actually the second book I have read by Scott Spotson so I’m pretty much used to his writing style already. HIs writing style is unique and very articulate. It’s very much easy to understand, well, at least in my opinion. THE PLOT AND THE WRITING STYLE IS JUST AS IMPRESSIVE AS THE CHARACTERS.

FINAL VERDICT:

I would totally recommend this book to those people who loves to read thriller books (that will make your brain go crazy) with a hint of romance. I will totally consider this book as one of the best books I have read this year! Very impressive. Y’all should try reading it because it’s amazing and I said so.

Rating:

★★★★★

My Wizard Buddy by Brian Wu, Scott Spotson: Juvenile Fiction Fantasy & Magic (Book One) [Kindle Edition]

My Wizard Buddy is an exciting new series, filled with alligator soldiers, superhero action and a berserk giant octopus. With plenty of magic and adventures to captivate young readers. If you are looking to hook a seven to thirteen year old reader this series, which blends fantasy along with valuable coming-of-age lessons, might be your magic tool to encourage reluctant readers.

This series is truly magical, as a wizard boy befriends a human boy on Earth. The main character, Tyler, is likeable and believable. He is someone whose problems and insecurities young readers can understand and sympathize with. The urban setting, and everyday existence, supports the reliability of the series. Creating a world that the magic seems almost believable as the reader witness the consequences of the magical Dirk’s well intentioned efforts to help his new friend.

In amongst paintball games, nemesis characters, wizards and reptilian horde the authors very skillfully address sensitive issues with intrigue and suspense. Creating a perfect opportunity forparents to easily address many issues like bullying and family bereavement.

Keep reading because the next in the series takes place on Dirk’s home world.

5.0 out of 5 stars A tense and gripping thriller, delivering entertainment at its best., August 31, 2014

This review is from: Delusional (Kindle Edition)

This is one of the most entertaining and enjoyable thrillers I have read for a very long time.

I find it really unpleasant to read about subjects such as affairs, and therefore I was a little nervous that I was going to automatically dismiss the storyline, but I was completely wrong. I was totally gripped by the story, which moves along at a really nice pace without dragging for even a moment, but in particular, I was genuinely impressed by the depth of character given to every individual in the story, making them feel like real people that you were actually sharing their experiences with and caring about.

The main character was exceptionally well observed to the point that I found myself smiling several times thinking, yes, thats so true and the aforementioned affair, given the terrifying circumstances which were surrounding these peoples lives, particularly the poor desperate husband who really tried to do the right thing, made the situation completely forgivable and even understandable.

This is definitely one of those books that whisks you away on an adventure, and with the smooth and crisps storytelling, it is an easy yet at the same time intelligent read that you can’t put down.

As you can tell, I absolutely loved this book and would recommend it wholeheartedly.

ps. I loved the end, it really made me smile!

Brilliant sequel to Life II

http://www.amazon.com/review/R1URKNKZBRFTPH

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Sequel to Life II August 22, 2014

By professor

Format:Kindle Edition

Sometimes I watch a movie and I notice the female lead gesticulating wildly, displaying many emotions through facial expressions, exhibiting every kind of body language, and I think, “My heavens, that lady is really acting her heart out.” And that’s the problem. She’s acting, not `living’ the character and so the illusion is lost. Yet one finds other actors so involved in their characters that the acting is totally unobtrusive. And that is good acting. It is the same with writing. I recently reviewed two really good books that were so full of snappy similes, metaphors and images that the writing got in the way of the story. That’s a distraction.

But this is not so with Scott Spotson. The writing flows comfortably and is quietly unobtrusive. It is only because I decided to write a review of the book that I looked at the writing. Only then did I realise how skilful and intelligent is the technique behind the pacy flow of the narrative. Unpretentious writing, sustained throughout a book at a high level of excellence, is difficult to maintain. Spotson does it with ease.

I love books about parallel dimensions or time travel. I am not particularly keen on space and aliens. When I came across mention of aliens in the early pages of Bridge Through Time, especially four-legged aliens with no heads, I experienced a frisson of concern. But I need not have worried. Spotson never lets his reader down. While the aliens remain a menacing background presence in the story, they do not inhibit the flow of the real narrative.

This a great story, a super follow-up to Life II. In fact, I think it is even better than Life II and I loved that book. The time-travel here is more purposeful, has more lurking dangers, has more underlying desperation. (Incidentally while Bridge Through Time works as a stand alone story, I would recommend that anyone thinking about buying it should read Life II first.) Bridge Through Time is filled with fascinating science, very convincingly written, and is backed by Spotson’s fertile and intuitive imagination as well as a very real knowledge of the science around quantum mechanics, particle physics, time Rips, wave theory and heaven knows what else. I found myself racing through the pages, eager to learn further secrets about time travel and eager, too, to learn about the lives, loves, adventures and misadventures of the very real characters who inhabit the story. There is much emotion as Kyle meets his parallel `fathers’ in a different dimensions, as well his parallel mother and his parallel Eva. Spotson handles this cross-dimensional element with great skill and the reader is drawn into a very empathetic relationship with all of these characters. The book climaxes with a wonderfully suspense-filled chase as Kyle attempts to right some cosmic wrongs. There is no way, however, that he can escape the furious aliens closing in on him from all sides…until Spotson finds a brilliantly creative and absolutely credible solution. It’s heart-in-the-mouth stuff.

At the end Kyle has had to make some heart-rending decisions and even to the very last line he is torn between two paths. I hated that the story had come to an end and wondered if perhaps Kyle could present himself to a local hospital as a man in a white lab coat, with no memory, no identity, no papers, no money but a mind full of science. Perhaps Welfare Services could help give him a new identity…and Life IV could begin?

This is a marvellous tale, one which will appeal to sci-fi aficionados and the general reader alike. Buy it. You’ll love it.

Sequel to “Life II” — “Bridge Through Time”

Bridge Through Time is the sequel to Spotson’s successful debut novel, Life II. Max’s son, Dr. Kyle Thorning, is now a high particle physicist at CERN in Switzerland. Meanwhile, after First Contact, powerful aliens with four arms and four legs, named Darsians, are taking control of the planet, with the muted subservience of its human population due to the astounding technological advances that the aliens introduce. Kyle has a powerful weapon—a new Time Travel machine—and must decide to travel to his father’s old parallel universe, where he doesn’t even exist, or confront the aliens in his home universe.
