Over-preparing or Underperforming?

October 1, Day 91 of TheHopeLine Tour of 2014

My left brake handle was acting up yesterday. And since we had a bicycle shop just down the street, it seemed prudent to have the bicycles checked out. The mechanic was able to troubleshoot my brake problem quickly. And, as good mechanics do, he was able to find other issues that neither Debbie nor I would have found, and fix them before they caused more serious troubles down the road.

Fall in the Ohio AirAs he worked the two bikes, we talked about our tour, since he w...

It’s a God Thing

September 30, Day 90 of TheHopeLine Tour of 2014

Another Divine Encounter

Yesterday, we had a rest day in Xenia, Ohio. Xenia is one of those locations with some tragic tornado history attached to it. Parts of the town were totally reconstructed after an F5 tornado in recent years. We’re always intrigued by tornado stories because bicycle tourists are particularly vulnerable to adverse weather.

Our motel did not come with accompanying restaurants as many of them do. Our food choices were a half m...

Front Row Seat to the Amazing

September 27-28, Days 87-88 of TheHopeLine Tour of 2014

Riding Low

Within 24 hours, lives can change. They can actually change in a second, but that was not the case with me this weekend. On Saturday, I started downhill, literally. Friday night, we stayed in Maysville, Kentucky and the only room available was on the second floor. There was no elevator, so we grimaced at the thought of carrying our bikes upstairs. Tim handled mine by himself, but it took both of us to carry his upstairs. So on S...

Tobacco Road

September 26, Day 86 of TheHopeLine Tour of 2014

Ridge View in KentuckyThe cycling today was excellent. Weather again was exquisite, topping out in the mid-80s with not a cloud in the sky and little humidity. We were treated to several steep climbs that raised us onto ridges, where we could look for long distances at the rolling terrain, sometimes covered with trees and other times with fields. The views were well worth the climbs. Once on the ridges, it seemed we swerved and rolled for miles to keep atop the ridge...

One Lost Puppy

September 26, Day 86 of TheHopeLine Tour of 2014

One Lost Puppy

I couldn’t help but think today about a puppy who found us along the roadside yesterday. He was a mystery dog who came packaged with a lesson for all of us.

One Lost PuppyDuring a rest break, Debbie and I wheeled our bicycles off the road onto a steep and narrow side road, one we knew would see little to no traffic while we were there. We were eating a snack, when all of a sudden we heard some noise in the thick woods nearby. Soon, out came a pup...

A Way Out

September 25, Day 85 of TheHopeLine Tour of 2014

Off Course

Debbie and I left our overnight accommodations this morning anticipating more hills and curves. However, we couldn’t have imaginedwhat we were about to encounter. I mentioned to Debbie that I had been thinking yesterday about how we haven’t had any serious navigational blunders like we did on our first trip across the country. It turns out this was a poorly timed comment. It doesn’t pay to gloat.

Our turn of events, well…actually an ill...

On the Border

September 24, Day 84 of TheHopeLine Tour of 2014

Early Morning Media Coverage

Most people wake up and look forward to a fresh cup of coffee. We woke up this morning looking forward to being on television in Louisville, Kentucky! Tim has put together a news release to share with radio and television stations in areas where we are bicycling. Sioux City, Iowa, was our first television interview on this tour. This morning, we had another opportunity to share our mission for TheHopeLine outside the...

Louisville Suburbs in Indiana

September 23, Day 83 of TheHopeLine Tour of 2014

Leaving Kentucky

We had mixed feelings about leaving Kentucky. The people have been so friendly and supportive. Yet, we know we must move on, and it is only for a time as we return to Kentucky after we make our way around Louisville.

The Ohio River at Brandenburg KentuckyFirst up was the bridge over the Ohio River. On a crisp, clear morning, the sun glistened and danced on the water as we looked upstream. The river was surrounded by full, end-of-summer greenery. We stopped atop the br...

Wisdom Beyond Their Years

September 21, Day 81 of TheHopeLine Tour of 2014

Today, we met a genius and a budding preacher. That’s two people in case you are wondering.

Peer Counseling at a Ripe Young Age

Church is always where we like to be on Sunday morning, and today was no different. Pastor Tim invited us up front at the Cloverport Community Church to explain about TheHopeLine. We shared the mission and later received the typical reactions and responses about people in crisis in the local community. Everyone is affecte...
