Cheering for the Underdog

I must say, it is fun to root for the underdog, especially when they win. From the looks of 2013′s edition of “March Madness,” I’m not alone. Two lower-seeded entrants in the NCAA men’s division I basketball tournament, the La Salle Explorers and the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles, have developed a national following for their overachieving efforts. Both teams have won their way into the “Sweet Sixteen” in this year’s single elimination extravaganza.

For me, this year’s overcomers are especially me...

An Everlasting Bonus

Sometimes in life a bonus comes our way—and I’m not referring to the monetary kind. It doesn’t come often, but when it does, it seems to come at just the right time. We can’t lay claim to it. There is no legal right to ownership, no entitlement. But it comes our way anyway, as an unexpected blessing. And this virtual trinket cannot then be stolen, squandered, or lost. Once we receive it, it is ours to keep, savor, perhaps even embellish, for years to come.

Deb at WorkMy wife, Debbie, was the recipient of...

“Pay It Forward”

Clearwater National Forest, IdahoWhile snooping around on the Adventure Cycling Association website last evening, I was struck by the amount of information to aidbicycle tourism. Thisnonprofit advocacy group boasts over 41,000 miles of mapped routes to provide the cyclist with a challenging, yet enjoyable, adventure. Not only has the work of pioneers who navigated, researched, and traveled various routes been preserved to maximize the cyclist experience, online forums allow would-be tourists to query touring veteransfor advi...

Two Are Better Article Goes Viral

Trees Looking UpDo you like surprises? Last weekend, Debbie and I received one. Some surprises aren’t welcome. You know them: an unexpected financial burden, an accident, and shocking, tragic news that changes your world forever. But our surprise was not that kind. Though somewhat shocking, our surprise was a welcome sign suggesting that things are looking up for our book, Two Are Better: Midlife Newlyweds Bicycle Coast to Coast.

As we left church, an acquaintance mentioned to us that he had seen our story on...

Every Day is Valentine’s Day

Heart balloon bouquetAs I write this, Valentine’s Day is less than a week away. Actually, my first sighting of its approach was shortly after Christmas almost two months ago! The pink and red was quickly in place throughout retail stores as the red and green items were slashed to 75% off. Every holiday has its recognizable colors. Have you ever noticed that?

What is love? Can you really just recognize it once a year on a cold day in February? I don’t think so. Love is a 24/7 experience that grows with time and age...

Flexibility

Burdened by the ClockFlexibility is an important attribute in physical endeavors, but flexibility of a different kind can be just as important. Tim and I were reminded of this last week when we sat down for an interview with a reporter from a local newspaper. The interview itself was exciting as we have sent out review copies of Two Are Better in hopes that readers will help promote our book (after reading it, of course!). During a 90-minute interview, we shared some laughs and relived the trip of a lifetime.

Seasons of Life

The changing seasonsOn a leisurely ride through the back roads in central Massachusetts Sunday, Debbie and I were enjoying a day of rest. It is offseason here, at least with regard tobicycling. The thermometer suggests we’re about as far from bicycling season as we can get. Just as I was thinking I’m glad we have a break, along came a hearty soul bundled up in cold weather gear on a racing bike. Good for her, I thought. But, I’ll use the break to rest and have something to really look forward to in a few months.
