The Pros of Marrying Late in Life

Hearts and RingsLast Thursday, Tim and I were interviewed by Nancy Redd on the internet news show: Huffington Post Live. We thought we would be discussing our book, Two Are Better, but the real story was marrying late in life, for the first time at age 52. We were joined in the interview by a relationship coach, and by a dating expert who writes for AARP. Before the interview, we compiled a list of pros and cons when marrying in midlife.

Here are the pros we came up with:

• We bring a rich background of life e...

Inspiration from the Tour de France

Route_of_the_2013_Tour_de_FranceWhat inspires you? If you’re like me, you’re motivated by the accomplishments of others, particularly when their feats pluck a personal chord of interest. This month, I’ve enjoyed watching the 2013 Tour de France bicycle race in what one would hope is a cleaner, post-doping era. There are several indications from this year’s 100th edition of the tour that passionate sport has returned to the roads of France.

The Tour de France is a monumental physical undertaking. A couple hundred of the world...

Is it Time to Break the Routine?

LifesAnOpenBookLast week, Debbie and I realized we neededto get out of town. She had just finished a long school year and I’d been nonstop on several fronts. Our individual styles sometime push the healthy boundaries of balance. And when the pace gets too hectic, you can only keep your edge for so long. Then, your work–andyour life–begin to suffer. When balance in life is challenged, particularly as a married couple, trouble can crop up in a variety of ways. Fatigue can cause patience to wear thin. Other ch...

Rural Massachusetts

West of Hardwick MassAs expected, summer arrived this week, and not a moment too soon. For the diehard bicyclist, our time has just arrived. Yesterday, Debbie and I packed our bikes into the car and headed west to find better aesthetics and less traffic from behind handlebars. Seasonably warm weather brought smiles to our faces and songs to our hearts.

Helmet Cam 021For those who associate metro Boston with Massachusetts, the term “rural Massachusetts” may seem quite foreign, perhaps even oxymoronic. But, alas, there are rural...

Serenity Amid Chaos

Deb cycling beside horse corral Deb cycling on Millham Road, Marlborough, Mass.Sunday brought a smile to our faces as we ventured out of doors after a long week of work. An overcast day provided a window of opportunity to bicycle for a few hours, and then return to Sunday relaxation later in the day. I had some fun experimenting with a feature of our Tachyon helmet cam. Flipping a switch changes the mode from video to rapid-fire still shots. How cool can that be, toride your bicycle while snapping photos, only finding out later what is inside. Just likepurchasing a box...

Cycling Acadia

A few weeks ago, I posted some of my favorite locations along Adventure Cycling Association’s Atlantic Coast route. One area that I omitted from that list–because we didn’t go there–was Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, Maine. Having lived one hour from Acadia, in Bangor, Maine, for nearly thirty years, I know the park like the back of my hand. It is a wonderful ocean-side playground for active adults. And I’m certain that it will contend for a spot on the “best of” list of anyone who takes...

GHCA Bike-a-thon

Sixteen years ago, a group of nineteen men set out to cycle 100 miles in southern Aroostook County to raise money for a small K-12 Christian school. The event became known as the GHCA bike-a-thon. It also came to be the best fundraiser, year in and year out, that the school has ever known. The Greater Houlton Christian Academy has a good thing going.

Southern Aroostook is located in a sparsely populated region of northern Maine, nestled next to the Canadian border. The people may be small in num...
