Chapter 1

It had been a hellish night.

Blaéz pinched the bridge of his nose and exhaled roughly. The guffaws of laughter, sounds of chatter, and balls clashing on the pool table in Dante’s Bar grew, adding to the cacophony in his head.

He sank deeper into his seat in the shadowed corner of the bikers’ hangout, his back to the wall, and frowned at the bit of whiskey left in his glass. His mind still on the deadly battle that occurred earlier in the night between his fellow Guardian, Dagan, and a Fallen who’d dared to claim the warrior’s mate. It had been brutal, but Dagan had finally taken care of the insane bastard.

Blaéz’s jaw hardened. Apparently, not even the sanctity of a mate-bond was safe with arseholes like the Fallen around. If anyone came after Darci, he’d detonate the fucker in a heartbeat.

The door chimed and swung opened, and as if the icy air had rushed in and froze every atom of noise, the dead silence that followed, pulled him out of his dark thought. Blaéz snorted. He didn’t need to look to know who had walked inside, despite the familiar scent of bergamot and green pine drifting to him. The effect of Týr’s outrageously good looks on the unsuspecting masses was a tad amusing, considering it slid straight off him.

The warrior strode across the cracked linoleum floor to where he sat. The din restarted.

Týr’s eyebrow rose. “Now this is strange, Celt, you idling about here since we knocked off from patrol five minutes ago.” He dragged out a chair.

“Hardly. Just needed a little time to assimilate after all the shit that happened.” He sucked back the rest of his drink, savoring the fiery trail it left in its wake.

“Hmm, there is that…” The former Norse god sprawled in his chair like some big cat, his dark eyes glinting with humor. “But, this isn’t like you. Usually, you’d be high-tailing it off to the castle and your mate.”

True. But Blaéz didn’t respond as a dark-haired waitress in heels sashayed over to them. Any more tilt on the hip-jut, and she’d probably topple over. She set another shot of whiskey near his elbow and turned to Týr. “Hey, handsome, what—”

Her eyes glazed over. Her brain had probably shut off. It took several blinks, as if to make sure what she saw was indeed real, before her cognitive skills appeared to reboot. She breathed, “Can I get ya anything?”

“Bottled water,” Týr said, frowning at the pool players on the opposite side of the bar placing their bets.

“Spring or still?”

“Still.”

“Ice or no?”

Blaéz snorted, which was lost on the dazed girl. Týr’s attention remained fixed on the biker who’d tossed a coin to start the game. “Just get me the water.”

“Okay.” She tripped off.

“Chickens, the lot of them,” he muttered. “Playing for change. I mean, a single bike? I’d bet my millennia earnings against all their bikes and win the damn things.”

Blaéz’s eyebrows rose to his hairline. That was a serious pile of dough. The ancient goddess, Gaia, to whom they’d sworn their fealty, had indeed been generous in her compensation for signing on as her Guardians. Just as well Týr picked his battles when it came to bets. He wouldn’t dare do so with any of the Guardians, he’d probably be an immortal pauper then.

Apparently, no longer interested in the bikers’ game, Týr pulled out a pack of M&M’s from his jacket pocket, dropped the candies into his palm, and looked up again. “So?”

Blaéz shrugged and leaned back in his seat. “Needed a drink. It’s been quite a night.”

“Yeah…” Týr popped the selected orange candies into his mouth and chewed, putting the package back into his jacket pocket. “It’s been a brutal one. Glad for Dag it’s all over, but bull on the excuse, man. Seriously, what’s going on with you?”

And that brought his thoughts right back to why he’d stopped off at Dante’s for a drink.

Blaéz met those rarely unamused, toffee-colored irises nailing him with a serious stare. How did he explain about the uneasiness that had been plaguing him for the last two days? Týr would probably think he was about to be hauled back to Hell again.

He asked instead, “You and Dagan good now?”

Something dark flashed in those pale brown eyes, an emotion Blaéz couldn’t quite decipher. Hell, the warriors all had personal demons they’d tried to shut off after their escape from Tartarus—he, more than anyone, knew that.

Týr didn’t respond as the waitress with the hip-tilt reappeared. She set his bottled water in front of him. “Thanks.” He dropped a ten on the table, then opened the frosty bottle and swallowed some. Finally, the snail-moving waitress trudged off.

“Yeah, we talked…” He plucked at the damp label on the bottle. “Dag and I. We’re finally back on par. Yeah…we’re good.”

Yes, both warriors seemed more at ease these days. However, neither Dagan nor Týr had volunteered any information regarding what had caused the rift between them. Blaéz didn’t ask.

“So. How goes the wedding plans?” Týr set the denuded bottle aside, squashing the wet sticker.

Blaéz frowned, moving the empty glass to the other side of the scarred table. “I don’t know if I’m doing the right thing—about the wedding, I mean. It’s something I want Darci to have. But…”

“But what?”

“Hell, her brother barely tolerates me. He probably thinks with no signed document claiming us as mated, it isn’t real.”

Even though Declan had plugged his dislike and undoubtedly still thought Blaéz was too dangerous, an uneasy accord existed between them now since it made the one person they both loved happy.

“You’re soul-joined. The woman’s yours. If he’s an obstacle, then change his mind—you have the ability.”

“Right.” Blaéz grunted, rubbing the overnight stubble on his jaw. “You obviously haven’t given thought to the fact that Darci would probably never speak to me again.”

New Release: The Duchess Lydia by Liza O’ Connor

I have Liza O’ Connor on my blog. Stop by and check out her new historical romance release!

The Magnificence of Vauxhall Gardens in 1817

The park, on the other side of Thames, that Lydia visited on her first day in London, was called Vauxhall Gardens since 1785. (It had other names before). While admission was charged for its many attractions, Lydia did not mind paying to enter. The Gardens supported enormous crowds, with many of its paths being perfect for romantic assignations. Tightrope walkers, hot-air balloon ascents, concerts, and fireworks provided regular entertainment. The rococo “Turkish tent” became one of the Gardens’ permanent structures, the interior of the Rotunda became one of Vauxhall’s most viewed attractions.

And for those who missed the actual war, in 1817 the Battle of Waterloo was re-enacted, with 1,000 soldiers participating.

It closed in 1840 after its owners suffered bankruptcy, but re-opened in 1841. It changed hands in 1842, and was permanently closed in 1859.

However, one odd item was rescued from the abandoned site when it closed for good: A statue erected in the Gardens depicting George Frederic Handel, the famous composer found its way to Westminster Abbey, which is where Handel also resides in death.

BLURB

Thanks to the Duke of Rochester’s generosity and the death of Wickham, Lydia Bennet is now a wealthy, independent woman. When Lydia takes residence in the finest house in the West End, her brother-in-law, Darcy, is concerned that she is ‘over her head’.

Despite his concerns, Darcy retrieves his sister, Georgiana, from Pemberley and places her in Lydia’s home. The two young ladies, both recently widowed, form a strong sisterly bond and soon set out to find love again.

Unfortunately, the man Lydia wishes to marry, David, the Duke of Rochester, is already contracted to marry another. When Lydia discovers the fiancée plans to murder David and his sons, she rallies her servants and friends, determined to stop the muderess at all costs. Will Lydia’s love of David and his boys triumph, or will the “Lady of Death” continue her path of destruction?

EXCERPT

Instead of going straight home, Lydia had the driver take her to Vauxhall Gardens. There was an admission fee, which she gladly paid, for inside there were many sites to marvel at. There were clowns, tightrope walkers, musicians, very fine walks, and what she liked most of all, hideaways for romantic assignations.

She regretted she hadn’t secured Wickham for this outing, but he would have baulked at the admission fee, no doubt demanding to know how she had money when he did not. Reluctantly, she returned to her carriage and headed home, worried about her sweet Wickham.

The moment she opened the door, she knew by the butler’s tense expression something was wrong.

“What has happened?” she asked the moment Simon closed the door behind her.

“I apologize, madam. I had not anticipated such cleverness in a man who had incurred a head injury.”

“What did he do?” she asked softly.

“I had a footman watching him, and I was watching him as well. Neither of us saw him take it, but a small painting is missing.”

Lydia sighed, certain if a painting was missing, Wickham had it. “Was it terribly valuable?”

“Fortunately, no. It was appraised at only twenty pounds.”

Why would he pick something of so little value? Lydia smiled as she thought of a possible reason. “Was the painting of a naked woman and small enough to fit in his suit pocket?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Well, we’ll make no more of the matter. I will talk to Wickham when he returns.”

An Excerpt from the Book
Take an inside look at Guardian Unraveled. Read this sizzling excerpt from the book.

Shae inhaled deeply, counted to ten, and prayed a madman hadn’t abducted her.
He remained hunkered down in front of her, eyes cool, his powerful forearms braced on his muscular, leather-clad thighs. Small scars marred his tanned fingers he kept loosely clasped in front of him. He wore a wide, corded leather band on one thick wrist and several narrow ones on his other. His black t-shirt stretched across his broad shoulders like a second skin, the short sleeves revealing bulging biceps. On his left one, he sported a sword-like tattoo made up of a myriad of intricate designs. It was unusual, like nothing she’d ever seen.
With those clothes and his long, ropey hair, he dressed like an extra from a movie shoot or something.
“You can’t keep me here,” she tried to reason with him. “You have to let me go. My uncle will be frantic and calling the cops by now.”
“Not until you answer my questions. Those dead men?”
She scowled, all thoughts of being calm and rational flying out the window. He’d accosted her outside the club, kidnapped her, and now he expected her to answer his damn questions? “Just what the hell are you talking about? What dead men?”
Sure, he was infuriatingly good-looking, but then so was Ted Bundy.
At the thought of the serial killer who’d charmed and murdered several college girls, Shae sprang to her feet and bulleted for the door. He grabbed her around the waist. Crap, she’d forgotten how fast he could move.
“Lemme go!” She hit him, but he merely swept her into his arms like she was some delicate freakin’ daisy and carried her back. Furious, she bit him. Hard. And hoped her teeth did some real damage to his biceps.
An annoyed grunt escaped him. “Stop that, you little hellcat.”
Like a bag of unwanted grain, he dropped her on her butt, back on the mat again.
Pain jarred up her spine, and she clenched her teeth. But the three angry, red streaks scored on his powerful forearm had her blinking.
She’d done that? Shocked to her core at her dreadful behavior, Shae opened her mouth to apologize but when she met those burning yellow eyes that had taken on hints of orange, a spurt of anger cut through her guilt. “This is kidnapping. I’m gonna have your barbaric ass thrown in jail!”
“Try. When you’re ready to talk, scream. Maybe I’ll hear you, maybe I won’t.” His eyes like flint, he stalked out, shutting the door quietly behind him, only to stride back inside. He crossed to the far end of the room, grabbed all the swords from the stand there, and walked out again. Leaving behind a small fridge. Right then, she wanted to fling the appliance at his arrogant head. Except he looked like he could break her neck with just one hand.
She had to get out of here before he came back.

Excerpt

Shae eyed the adjoining door warily—dammit, she couldn’t not help if he was hurt.

Despising her weakness, she got off the bed and made her way across the room, her socks-clad feet silent on the granite floor, and opened the door. A dense gloom cloaked the room, but a short, fat candle burned on the nightstand, casting a pool of light over the man on the four-poster bed. She took another step inside and stumbled to a halt.

Dear sweet Jesus! Shirtless, Dagan rested against the headboard, eyes shut. His bronze pecs and biceps gleamed in the soft light. His one knee was raised, his leathers unzipped, and his big palm was wrapped around his cock as he stroked himself. It was the sexiest, most erotic thing she’d ever seen. He was so beautiful.

Held in the throes of the sensual spell, she swallowed hard.

His head turned, his movements slowed. Through half-mast eyelids, those molten yellow eyes fastened on her like a sleek predator’s. He didn’t speak.

Shae rushed into speech, her face on fire. “I heard a noise, and thought… never mind. I’m sorry—”

“Don’t go.”

His low words stopped her retreat.

“The moment you left me tonight, I couldn’t get you out of my mind.” His palm slowly worked his erection in mesmerizing strokes. Up. Down. Up. Down. “The way your body felt against me, your mouth on mine. I thought this would take away the impossible craving I have for you, but it’s just a poor fucking substitute and doesn’t even work…”

“Why? The woman in the club—”

He shook his head. “I don’t want any of them.” He didn’t? “I tried to do the right thing and leave you alone, but I cannot. Come here, Shae.”

Her heart stopped then started again, her fingers clenching her nightshirt. However, it was his stare—heavy with desire and edged with yearning—that trapped her. As if under hypnosis, her feet took the steps across the room toward him.

“Give me your underwear.”

“W-what?”

Now.”

The softly uttered word held an undercurrent of steel. And because she’d lost her ever-loving mind, and he was all she’d thought of since they’d stepped through the portal, she slipped her hands beneath her nightshirt and drew her panties off.

He took them from her shaky fingers and dropped them on the pillow beside him. “On the bed, opposite me.”

Swallowing hard, she climbed up and pulled her nightshirt down, her knees pressed together.

A dark brow rose at her actions, but he didn’t say anything. As his hand moved again, her focus lowered to his groin, and at the sight of him stroking his long, thick sex, heat licked through her veins.

His fingers slowed their pumping motion. Her gaze rushed to his. Those sun-bright eyes burned with carnal heat. He crawled over to her, spread his knees, and caged her—his leathers still undone. With slow, deliberate movements, he unclenched her ice-cold hand from the hem of her nightshirt, put her two fingers into his warm mouth, and leisurely sucked them.

Her heart tripped. As if it were a direct line to her core, arousal flared as he lapped her fingers. Anxiety fled. Grasping her ankles, he put them over his thighs and pushed her nightdress up, opening her to his gaze. He brought her fingers down between her legs…

Blurb:

He always keeps his promises…

Private security specialist, Nate Wolff promised to rescue humanitarian aid worker, Macy Gibbs, not harbor a fugitive. Determined to keep his promise and not make the same mistakes his brother made, he risks his life to protect her from the terrorist group hunting her.

Keeping this one will be the hardest thing he’s ever had to do…

With a bounty on her head for the murder of a man who bought her in an illegal human trafficking ring, Macy Gibbs puts both her life, and the life of the tall, handsome stranger who’s vowed to rescue her, in danger. Emotionally scarred from her ordeal, she trusts no one. But, can the biggest danger she’s about to face be the impact this former SEAL has on her heart?

Excerpt:

Nate put a hand on Macy’s shoulder. She didn’t stir. Unable to resist, he caressed her cheek. Warm. Not as hot. A good sign. Beneath his hand her skin felt soft as silk. He gently ran his thumb across the fading bruise on her jawline. Anger and the urge to protect and defend surged through him. Except, it felt more personal. Not just a bodyguard protecting his charge. More…

Nope. Not going there. The reasons stuck like a knife in his heart.

He dropped his hand to his side, sobered, and put his thoughts in proper order. First things first. Get Macy dressed, then grab her and go. They may not have confiscated his weapons, but that could be a ruse to keep him off guard.

His supply of clothing for Macy was running low. Only two shirts and one pair of pants left. Foregoing the undergarments, he grasped the edge of the blanket, prepared to dress her and make a run for it.

“Nate?”

The murmured question came from Macy. He froze, his gaze flying to her face to find her eyes open. Glazed, confused.

Letting go of the blanket, he leaned over her. “Hey. I’m here.”

Her beautiful blue eyes that reminded him so much of Bleu Lake back home, met his, radiating with pain. “Don’t leave me. Please.”

The impact of those words went straight through his chest. At that moment, he knew they couldn’t go. Not until she was healthy enough to go. They’d pushed hard already and look where it got them.

Bending, he pressed a kiss to her forehead. “I’m not going anywhere. Go back to sleep. You’re safe.”

That seemed to work because the tension went out of her muscles and her eyes drifted closed. Seconds later her breathing evened out, indicating she slept peacefully.

Nate straightened and scrubbed a hand down his face. He returned the clothes to his pack, dragged the crude chair in front of the bed and dropped down on it. His Glock now rested across his thigh, finger near the trigger as he settled in.

Whomever, or whatever, came through that door they would have to go through him first in order to get to Macy. And he’d die before he let another person hurt her.
