Book Cover Reveal – Knitting Can Walk!
My second novel, Knitting Can Walk!, will be published on 28th January 2016.
Today, I am proud to present the cover of the book. I designed it myself.
Please let me know what you think.
The story follows the adventures and misadventures of a teenage boy growing up in Hong Kong in the early ‘seventies. There is plenty of mischief, but at the centre of his story is the greatest achievement of his life. He teaches a little orphan girl to walk despite the fact that medical expert opinion is that it would be impossible for her to ever walk

Hugh’s Photo Challenge: Week 7 – Funny Or Strange Signs
I took this photo of a shelf product label in a Tesco supermarket in Andover, UK recently.
Those who abbreviate ought to be more careful!
If you look at the shelf above, you can just about see to which product the label refers.

Happy St Andrew’s Day!
I’d like to wish all my blog followers a very Happy St Andrew’s Day.
It’s time to enjoy a grand supper of haggis, neeps and tatties and a wee dram of single malt.
I have so many very happy memories of suppers with friends and family on this day in times gone by: in Perth, St Andrews, Hong Kong, Singapore, Düsseldorf and Chepstow, and many other places around the world. But I won’t bore you with my own personal reminiscences, I’ll just leave you to enjoy sharing the rest of Scotland’s National Day, and enjoy your feast.

Lifestyle | 25 Things To Do During The Festive Period
I love this list, and think that we could all go on adding to it.
On number 4, I would endorse the recommendation for the German Christmas Market in Manchester for those in UK. But I have very happy memories of Weihnachtsmärkte in Bielefeld and Düsseldorf.
I would recommend combining activities 9 and 10 and, in my case, I would make a slight amendment. So that would become:
9/10: Layer up and go for a winter walk followed by a large mug of hot Glühwein (mulled wine).
Now I’m happy just thinking about that.

Confession: I love Christmas – and since it’s exactly one month until Christmas day, our home has been a hive of activity, as the process of unboxing decorations and transforming the various rooms has begun.
I will be sharing some of my activities throughout December but, in the meantime, here are 25 suggestions for things that you can do during the festive period:
Host a month-long movie marathon to screen all of your favourite festive films.
Get your skating boots on and visit an outdoor ice rink.
Bake gingerbread men, Christmas cupcakes and/or a yule log to share with guests, family, friends and co-workers.
Visit a German Christmas Market and soak up the atmosphere (If you’re in the UK, I recommend Manchester).
Get involved with ‘ Operation Christmas Child .’
Take photos to capture the memories and create a Christmas scrapbook.
Put together a festive playlist that is jam-packed full of the Christmas…

Review: Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah
Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah by Richard Bach
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This is absolutely the best book that I have read in a long while.
There is much philosophy and much humour. And there is so much to stimulate the reader’s mind into a flurry of thoughts. I could pick out so many quotable passages, but my favourite remains as one which I used on my own blog recently. If you are interested, take a look at
Writer’s Quote Wednesday – The Chrysalis Moment
.
I loved it so much that I shall immediately put it onto my personal top books of all time list.

How To Force A Redirect To The Classic WordPress.com Editor Interface
If you agree with me that the new editor interface that WordPress has imposed on its users is HORRIBLE, and you prefer the classic editor interface that we’ve been using for a long time, then this post is for you.
The instructions are very simple to follow, even for the less technical amongst our community, and it works!
Big thanks to both Dennis and the originator, The Penguin.

The Solution To Use The Classic Editor
If you are blogger at wordpress.com, this post here will help you to solve a big problem. As you have noticed, the decision makers at WordPress want to force you to use the recent new editor interface that is purely designed for mobile devices and for users who only create short-form content. This is of course a pain if you are desktop user and if you like to create long-form content as well. In this post you will learn how to get back to the classic editor permanently.
In the new editor form, we had a link back to the classic editor but that link is now gone too. WordPress does not have the intention to give us the link back as you can read here in the forums. If you go through this huge forum thread, you will find out…

Writer’s Quote Wednesday – Look After Your People
Three weeks back, when I published a quote for Writer’s Quote Wednesday hosted by Silverthreading, entitled The Chrysalis Moment, I promised you another quote from Sir Richard Branson.
During my working life, I have led, and even formed, several teams of people. When we build our initial list of objectives, I always write down the same number one: to have fun. My theory, which seems to work, is that if we are enjoying our work, we deliver better and with good quality. High morale is infectious. We find that our customers and our partners enjoy working with us and want more. Customers who want more are happy to pay more for the privilege, so the business grows and flourishes.
So, if I surround myself with great people and I treat them very well, I get the best out of them and the whole team benefits. On my own I am nothing. With a team of people who enjoy working for me, I can be very successful. In line with all that I have said, I make sure that when we get together to celebrate the team’s success I give credit to those who deserve it.
The importance of taking care of your employees cannot be over-emphasized. Never forget this.
Clients do not come first. Employees come first. If you take care of your employees, they will take care of the clients.
Sir Richard Branson

ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO…
Aside from the 1915 population of Las Vegas (THIRTY!), the most gob-smacking stat in this report is “There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A.!” That is the aggregate of two or three college shootings in USA in 2015. Makes you wish you had a time machine that only went backwards, doesn’t it?

1915….that’s right, 100 years ago this is the way it was, like it or not!!!
This will boggle your mind!
The year is 1915, one hundred years ago.
What a difference a century makes!
Here are some statistics for the year 1915:

Fuel for cars was sold in drug stores only.
Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.
Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.
The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.
The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower.
The average U.S. hourly wage in 1915 was 25 cents per hour.
The average U.S. worker made between $400 and $700 per year.
A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year.
A dentist $2,500 per year.
A veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year.
