Do You Believe In Synchronicity?

Do you believe in the interconnectedness of everything across time AND space? Please read this and leave comments on my re-blog or on the original. I will enjoy the discussion that ensues and will read your views with great interest. Perhaps you could relate experiences which lead to your belief?

Hello everyone. I hope all is well with you. I’m back today after a busy week at work and a busy week from writing. I’m at 38,871 total words on my latest MS. Even though I’m not participating in Nano this year, my plan is to finish this rough draft by the end of the month. It’s going to be tight with the holidays but I think I can do it.

Today I’d like to talk about Synchronicity. It’s an interesting concept that was coined by the psychologist Carl Jung. He coined it as a “meaningful coincidence.”

Synchronicity occurs when a coincidence shifts the direction of your life.

Do you believe in this? I do. I’ve had my own personal experiences with it. According to some mediums, there are always signs letting us know something big is about to happen. That’s…

Why is the Word Pants Plural?

English-Language Thoughts

Or trousers for that matter, if you’re from the UK. I went with pants for the title simply because most of you, dear readers are American. Anyway, the burning question: why are these words so brazenly plural when they clearly refer to a single garment?

Book Review: Presentation Zen by Garr Reynolds

Presentation Zen: Simple Ideas on Presentation Design and Delivery (Voices That Matter)Presentation Zen: Simple Ideas on Presentation Design and Delivery by Garr Reynolds

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

There are over four thousand reviews of this book on Goodreads, so it is unlikely that I can say anything fresh about the content and style of this superb book, so I am not about to try. I’ll just tell you a little story of how it helped me at a most opportune time.

I have been presenting and instructing for well over three decades, and I am still learning something new every day. We should all be open to that and never believe that we hae actually arrived at the perfect state. Strive for perfection.

I got a lot out of this book. I read it on a plane from England to my company HQ in Florida. I was due to co-deliver a two-week induction class for new joiner technical staff from all over the world. As you can imagine, we had put a lot of effort into the planning and preparation for the ten days of intense instruction.

Despite the experience of the new people, I have always felt that everyone could do with a few tips and hints on good communication, public speaking and, in particular, delivering powerful presentations and demonstrations to our customers. So I had two hours dedicated to these topics.

I mostly knew what I was going to do with the two hours, but reading

Presentation Zen: Simple Ideas on Presentation Design and Delivery inspired me to change my content and delivery.

I was able to use the three main guiding principles of the book:

restraint, simplicity and naturalness

, to construct a session to illustrate the power of those three guiding principles to the participants on my course.

I went analogue! I minimalised! I told my story!

This book really helped me to do that.

Was I rewarded?

Yes, I was.

At the end of the course, all of the participants were assessed on a presentation and demo which they had to prepare during the two weeks. My presentation on good communication came on day one, shortly followed by the assigning of course assignments.

All of my students used the guiding principles of Presentation Zen: Simple Ideas on Presentation Design and Delivery to great effect. It was a joy to watch!

Thank you very much Garr Reynolds.

Billy

This is a poem that I learnt at school when I was eight. You can imagine my mother’s horror when my little sister, aged six at the time, returned from a friend’s birthday party, and the conversation went something like this.

– Did you have a nice time darling?

– Yes Mummy. We all had to do a party piece.

– Oh. Did you sing a song?

– No. I said Lance’s poem.

– Which poem is that darling?

My friend Billy’s got a ten foot willy,

And he showed it to the girl next door.

She thought it was a snake,

And hit it with a rake,

And now it’s only five foot four!

I was in serious trouble!

Unfurling

Four years after I wrote When Pleasure Blooms, along comes the perfect poetic synopsis.

Thank you for Unfurling the Bloom in such a sensitive and sensual manner, Elan Mudrow!

Elan Mudrow

Before the unfurling

The inward bloom

An artist’s fist

Compressed to the movement

Of skin and desire

Held to earth

By fragile stem

One day will

Follow the sun

Learn to lure the bee

Speak in soft flesh tones….

And landing upon transitory beauty

Knows

Only representations

Are permanent.

Form, structure, pigments.

A ghost’s body

Still holds the shape

Of hands outlined, flat

Upon the prehistoric cave

Here is where my deepest heart lies. These writings appearing in this blog emanate from the many times when my passion hits the bottom and other times where it seems to fly on wings. To solace myself, I go to the woods on deep forest trails, pray to waterfalls, look over valleys, and dip my hands in the waters of springs, hoping to soothe myself. Forgive me if I get angry; for at times I’m just plain mad at the world.

[image credit: Millard Fillmore’s Bathtub] My annual Halloween re-post!

I love Halloween. And by that I mean, of course, I love the excuse to buy massive bags of candy bars in make-it-through-the-zombie-apocalypse quantities, and not in those little wuss-bar sizes either. Cause I’m ALL about the leftovers kids.

But I didn’t know how it works here in Scotland, so I consulted the brain trust: unsuspecting strangers who talk to me at the park. No, I know what you’re thinking. It’s the UK. When you see someone you know, you turn around and walk immediately in the other direction on the off-chance that they might want to talk to you. It has absolutely nothing to do with whether…

Library

I am proud to be associated with this excellent, hard-working author. She is one to watch!

Thoughts by Mello-Elo

It is with great pleasure that I get to announce that my books are now available at the Woodley Library in Reading. From Spoilt Miranda to The Iron Pendulum, they are rubbing words with the likes of Tom Clancy and Julia Donaldson!

It’s not the easiest thing to get your books into your local library and it can take a while for them to be vetted and loaded onto the database. But that’s not the most exciting thing: it’s opening a copy of your book and finding the first page stamped with dates acknowledging the book has been taken out for a spin! That’s when the bubbles ricochet against your rib cage and you realise book lovers have access to your words, anytime.

I’m jumping for joy and would like to thank the librarians at Woodley Library for adding my stories. Little events like this mean so much to…

Take a look through this article from Esther Newton. With some hard work, there has to be at least one route to pennies in the bank amongst all these links.
