My Transition from Blogger to Fiction Writer

girl writing in window

After several years as a serious blogger, I made the transition from writing non-fiction blog posts to writing fiction. It was a huge change. One I honestly didn’t think I had in me. I had always thought people who wrote fiction were different from me. They were the people who had dreamed of writing since they were a kid. The people who felt as though they would perish if they couldn’t write. I fell into neither category.

In fact, I learned to write almost by accident, through years of writing papers in graduate school. My skills grew with each mark of my professors’ red pens. I couldn’t help but improve. To obtain my degrees I had to get with the program and write properly.

It seemed to me that fiction writers were “real” writers. I’m not sure what I thought blogging was, but I didn’t give it enough credit in the “writer” department. (Now I realize that there are all types of writing, just different forms of it – all worthy.) Fiction intimidated me. I didn’t have the audacity to write fiction. That was like saying, “Hey, I really think I can write!” And I didn’t have the confidence to do that. Not at first.

The first fictional passage I ever wrote was a sexy scene inspired by a dream I’d had. Embarrassed as hell, I showed it to my boyfriend (now husband). He’s a slow reader and every second he was reading felt like an eternity. I curled up in the fetal position and almost sucked my thumb waiting for his reaction. I felt like an artist at a gallery opening who wanted to hear what people thought of his work, but hid in the back room for fear they wouldn’t like it.

I was shocked when he told me he thought it was better than anything else I’d ever written. I tried not to be miffed. Had to reminded myself that he was NOT dissing my years of blogging, rather he was praising my fictional work. (Artistic types can sometimes be ultra sensitive aka. pains in the ass. Have you noticed?) He followed up his assessment with the information that he used to listen to Playboy radio all the time and my piece was as good as anything they featured. Um, Great I think…

Heartened by his positive feedback, I began my writing journey. Boy, did I have a lot to learn. I didn’t know anything about story structure or the guidelines for writing a romance (like that it needed a happily ever after.) That stumped me because I love tragedy. Oh well. I had to learn to nix passive voice, repeating words = bad, and you’ve got to show, not tell. These are things we don’t worry about as much in non-fiction writing, though repetitive words probably suck no matter what you’re writing. But as a blogger you don’t have an editor red-lining all your favorite words because you overuse them.

Somehow I made it. Crossed over the bridge from non-fiction blogger to published fiction writer. It’s been an interesting journey, and I’m still learning. LOTS! I try to read a book on “the craft” of writing at least every quarter, if not every month. And I take online classes. (I love those.) I can tell you, the transition can be made.

If you write non-fiction – you already know how to write. You already have the basic writing skills you need. Just give it a try. The best thing you can do is actually write. Write some more, and then some more. Take classes. Read about writing, and have people you trust critique your work. You can’t help but learn from your mistakes and you get better all the time!

Leave me a comment and let me know about your journeys. I love to hear about other writers’ paths. Good luck!

Bebe Balocca’s Sexy New Disco Romp & Interview

Move over Boogie Nights! Bebe Balocca’s Learning to Soar is a steamy new tale of love and lust under the lights and disco balls. Learning to Soar is available now at Total E-Bound. Bebe’s here today to tell us about it.

Learning to Soar

What was the inspiration behind this book?

I live in a very small town (population 450) that’s a good hour away from a real city. When my husband and I do get a night away in the big town, it’s a rare treat to go to an actual nightclub. Once in a while, the scene will just be magical. Beautiful people, gorgeous decorations, hot music thumping, and a packed dance floor… I wanted to take that little slice of perfection up a notch. What if the nightclub were an invitation-only place filled with intimate friends? What if there were truly zero inhibitions on the dance floor? What if there were a sex therapist who used his nightclub to help clients work through their issues?

Love the premise! And I bet that’s interesting living in a town so small. We have about 15,000 and I thought that was small.

Which character spoke to you the most while you were writing this book or which was you favorite?

I loved how Chloe was willing to drop her self-consciousness and open up to the experience at Volare. Damien, it turns out, loves that about her, too. Chloe’s got a great combination of brains and beauty, which all the women I know would love to have, and she’s been hurt badly in the past, as so many of us have as well.

When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

When I was a senior in high school, I loved writing argumentative essays about literature. Playing with words and weaving in figurative language for zest was really fun for me. In the last several years I’ve worked as a contract and freelance writer, but I’ve dreamed of writing fiction since those days of English lit.

Tell us about your favorite atmosphere for writing.

I have a cozy private office that I decorated in my favorite interior colors (terra cotta and cream, with lots of natural shell and wooden accents). My computer faces the window, which I open on pretty days, and my miniature wiener dog Scarlett is generally in the chair next to me or else in my lap. I work in silence, except for the birds’ singing. I drink a lot of herbal tea and ice water while I work, and I like to snack on things like fruit and raw carrots.

Do you have a project in the works that you’d like to tell us about?

“May Day” was just accepted by Ellora’s Cave. It’s about Marcy, a wealthy widow, and her journey. I loved Marcy’s imperfections—she’s led a very privileged life and is a bit of a snob—and I loved the barriers that she had to break through in order to learn how to love. She’s a bit of a cougar, too, which was fun to write.

How do you make yourself stand out in a competitive market?

I write unflinching erotic scenes and try to engage all of the senses. I want my readers to really feel like they’re part of the action. I often add cultural references to my books, such as lines from songs and allusions to movies, when I feel they’d add depth to the scenes. I also include humor to lighten the mood from time to time.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

I play with my family, go on walks with my dogs, spend time with friends, and go out on dates with my husband whenever I can.

What are you reading right now?

I’m almost done with ‘Tis, A Memoir by Frank McCourt. Not romance by any stretch, but a compelling look at the life of an Irish immigrant in the middle of last century. It’s the sequel to Angela’s Ashes, which I also loved. I read all kinds of fiction and make mental notes of techniques writers use that affect me.

I loved Angela’s Ashes. Always remember at the beginning when he says “A happy childhood is hardly worth your while.” To me as a psychologist – that’s priceless!

What is your favorite color?

Wine red

Favorite food?

Thai red curry

If you had to be stranded on a desert island – who is the one person you’d like to be stranded with, and what one luxury item would you like to have with you?

My husband and an iPad stocked with eBooks.

Love that choice! I can tell you are so in love with your hubby.

If you could be any animal what would it be?

A spoiled lap dog. Scarlett, my miniature dappled dachshund, is living the dream.

What is something readers would be surprised to learn about you?

If they live in the United States, it’s entirely possible that the standardized reading tests their kids took at school contained some passages I wrote—and yes, they were definitely G rated.

That’s awesome!

The Blurb for Learning to Soar:

What happens at Volare STAYS at Volare…

Ever since her relationship with Mark crashed and burned, Chloe’s been unable to take off and reach the big O. Enter Damien Walters, a deliciously unconventional sex therapist. Damien’s therapy sessions take place at his nightclub, and Chloe quickly sees why admittance to Volare is by-invitation-only. Volare’s patrons, who are Damien’s satisfied and discreet former clients, leave their inhibitions at the door when they walk past the bouncer. Anything goes on Volare’s dance floor…

Using a few key accessories and some hands-on help from Volare’s regulars, Damien enables Chloe to reach her full sexual potential once more. And he has a special proposal just for her: Chloe can join him on the Volare crew as his accountant and therapy assistant. It’s an offer Chloe can hardly refuse, especially given the fact that Damien’s the man with his hand on the throttle.

With the pulsing beat of Volare’s dance floor, the seductively suave Damien bent on pleasing her, and her newly restored sexual prowess, Chloe’s position at Volare seems like a dream come true. However, she’s going to have to help Damien get over some of his own issues in order for the two of them to soar together.

Here’s an adults-only excerpt from Learning to Soar:

The sounds of the bar had amplified since Chloe had entered Damien’s office. She walked unsteadily toward the packed dance floor. She was glad that she’d worn boots, the ankle support helped hold her upright. Chloe approached the edge of the dance floor and took stock of the situation.

Tingling, pleasantly pinched nipples? Check.

Heavy, tight sensation in pussy from inserted toy? Check.

Mass of writhing individuals to navigate through? Check.

Let’s do this thing.

Chloe stepped onto the smooth wooden floor and felt the music throb in her bones. Does it have to be so damn loud? she wondered. She worked her way around several couples and came upon two laughing young women. They appeared to be engaged in a contest to see who could squat down to the floor then rise up, slowly, while moving to the beat. Just looking at them made Chloe’s thighs burn in protest.

With her eyes on the dancers with thighs of steel, Chloe failed to watch where she was going. She bumped into a solid wall and recoiled in alarm and embarrassment.

Arnaud.

The huge man grinned—his bright white smile shone from his dark face. Chloe’s jaw dropped open and she felt the chrome toy start to slide out. Clenching her muscles tightly, she clamped her thighs together and willed the sleek little metal egg to get back where it belonged. Once again, the heavy fullness from its insertion combined with the tingling pressure against her G spot caused her to gasp with pleasure.

And the hugely muscled, hot guy in front of her wasn’t helping any.

Arnaud placed one hand on the small of her back and drew her to him, rolling his hips enticingly.

Chloe let her pull him close. She swayed with him as the music pounded in her head. His black silk shirt was now open almost to his navel, exposing his hairless, sculpted torso. Arnaud caught her eye and winked. Chloe smiled and brought her hand up to his arm. It seemed that, with regard to their awkward introduction, all was forgiven. Chloe’s fingers failed to reach even halfway around his bicep, but what she could reach of his unyielding, muscular hardness felt wonderful.

Chloe blushed to feel the stiffness of Arnaud’s cock against her belly. She stroked his thick arm as he pressed into her, thrilling at the sweet, shameless pressure from his erection. Leaning against him, she lightly traced her nipples against his chest. Arnaud’s eyes widened and his cock twitched in response.

Chloe rubbed her jewellery-encased nipples against his pectorals and ground her belly against his erection, closing her eyes and relishing the wickedly delicious sensations. The chain hanging from the metal toy tickled her lady bits delicately, and the chrome egg inside her felt heavy, thick, slippery, and… alive?

She cried out when the egg vibrated inside her and glanced up to the balcony in alarm. There was Damien, sitting at a table and looking down at her. He waved nonchalantly and held up a small device.

What People Are Saying About Venetian Love Knots

“Venetian Love Knots delights with its engaging characters and stunning plot twists, which lead to a wonderfully romantic conclusion in Italy’s City of Love.” – The Jeep Diva

“The exotic delights that Allison gets to experience courtesy of Cole and Nico are every woman’s dirty little secret and are written with lots of sexual intensity. These scenes are full of BDSM and other erotic play and leave you parched!” – Joder, Words of Wisdom From The Scarf Princess

“Let me tell you, this author does NOT disappoint in the sexual scenes… so be sure you are alone in a locked room before reading!” – Adaline with Spanking Romance Reviews

“Are your expectations the same for every author you read? Do you ever discover yourself comparing a debut author with a well established bestseller; are you more forgiving or less strict? I asked myself these questions after issuing this book 5 of 5 mugs – so I let this book/review marinate for several days. As I perused it this morning to ensure I still felt it deserved the highest possible rating, I discovered I was rereading it {when I should have been on to the next book} but, I wasn’t ready to let Allison go yet.” – Heather Coulter, Books, Books, & More Books

“This book had me riveted from the first page…A great read and I will be looking for more books by this author!” – Erzabet, Erzabet’s Enchantments (5 stars)

The Need to Write for the Ambivert Reader

girl reading photo: Girl Reading fensterlesbrillzigschwommausschnitt.jpg

Writers are supposed to be introverts, right? They hole up by themselves with their keyboard and write, no need for outside interaction. At least that’s the stereotype.

I’m actually the complete opposite – so extreme on the extravert scale that I’m about to slip off the edge. Yet, I’m a writer.

Extraversion and introversion are personality traits that describe where a person puts their energy and what feels most comfortable for them – either turning their attention to external things and people (extraversion) or to internal ideas and reflection (introversion). This trait is measured on a continuum, and most people actually fall somewhere in the middle. People who exhibit both introverted and extraverted traits have been labeled “ambiverts”.

Forbes recently reported research that shows ambiverts, and not extraverts, as previously thought, make the best sales people. Why is this? Because extraverts get so excited and enthusiastic that they forget to listen to their customer. Whereas an ambivert will have enough energy to excite the customer and will still be introverted enough to listen to the customer, ultimately meeting his needs.

Writers can have issues similar to sales professionals. I was recently reading a book by a popular author, and I found myself skimming the majority of the book. I wanted something, and to be honest – it wasn’t there. As an extravert, I was looking for dialogue and action. I’d bet my last nickel the author who wrote it is an introvert. Over 90% of the book took place in the characters’ heads. Pages and pages went by with no action or dialogue. I couldn’t take it. I felt like I was trapped inside the character’s head, held hostage and subjected to incessant navel gazing.

Introverts may love this style of writing. That’s great, but for an extravert like me, it’s like fingernails raking a chalkboard. The study I mentioned gave me some insight into this problem. Most people are not that introverted, or as extroverted as I am. They’re somewhere in the middle. I propose that it benefits authors to aim for that middle ground in their writing.

Being from the extraverted side of the spectrum, I struggled mightily when studying how to write in “Deep Point of View”. I’d read examples where characters were so in touch with their deep thoughts, feelings, and observations that I thought, “I have never been that deep in my own head, how can I be that inside my character’s?” As an extrovert, most of my world happens outside of me. Not inside. That’s why I like dialogue and action – it’s external to the character. That suits the way I’m wired psychologically.

Keep these things in mind. Consider your reader. Most of them will have both extroverted and introverted tendencies. This is why you’ll have more success with a good balance of  1.) your character’s thoughts/emotions (internal world) and 2.) action/dialogue (external world).

Your writing will be more palatable to a wider audience AND you’re less likely to turn off readers who are on the extreme end of either side of the extroversion- introversion scale. If they can find something they can respond to in your work, they are much more likely to read your next book or recommend your work to a friend.

How about you? Are you an extravert or an introvert? How does this affect your writing or your experience as a reader?

WIP – Daddy More Bucks #SatSpanks

Saturday Spankings

Normally I wouldn’t share something from a work that isn’t finished, or even contracted. But I have been having so much fun this week writing this Work In Progress that I’m just throwing convention aside to share this moment from my hero and heroine’s first meeting.

He’s a wealthy entrepreneur who prefers to pay for sex, and she’s a girl who’s had to turn to prostitution to survive in a bad economy. Both view sex from a practical perspective, never requiring emotion or involvement. But that’s about to change…

Locking her eyes with his, she slipped out of her chair onto the floor and crawled on her hands and knees around to his side of the table. Setting her hands on his knee, she attempted to push back his chair. But it didn’t go as smoothly as she had planned. The chair didn’t budge.

“What are you doing?” His face wore a bemused expression.

“I was going to ask you if I could please suck your cock, Daddy.”

“Sir,” he corrected. “And I will be the one to tell you what to do, young lady. You are out of line.”

Marley sat back on her heels, deflated. “Oh. Sorry. Sir.”

“My, my. You are a little slut. I think you’ve earned a spanking for that little stunt. Come up here and lay across my lap.”

“Subterfudge” To Be Included in “Whip It Up” Anthology

Pin Up Cooking TaffyI’m thrilled to announce that my short story (14,500 words) “Subterfudge” will be included in Total E-Bound’s upcoming “Whip It Up” Anthology, a BDSM anthology with whips and canes, puddings and cakes, Doms and subs. I can’t wait to read the other stories!

“Subterfudge” is the story of a submissive and her Master who live together working towards domestic bliss in their relationship. The trouble begins when Roger asks his sub, Ashley, to learn to cook for him. She thinks it’s going to be easy, but instead finds it to be quite a challenge. These two get into some hot, sexy fun in the kitchen.

Light and fluffy, “Subterfudge” is like a 3-egg omelette – full of variety and very filling. Intriguing punishments, spanking, food play, bondage, anal sex, and rimming are all part of this naughty little story.

Here’s the blurb:

When Roger asks his live-in sub Ashley to learn to cook for him she eagerly agrees, assuming it’s going to be a breeze. After all, she’s a bright, accomplished woman with a successful career – how hard can it be to prepare some food?

Once she’s up to her ears in cocoa and flour, Ashley realizes cooking is more complicated than it looks. Finding ways to shortcut the process, Ashley dupes Roger into believing she’s a diva in the kitchen. But when he finds out she’s not the chef of his dreams – will he serve up a punishment fit for a saucy sub or will she lose her Master’s love forever?

Watch for a cover reveal soon. The “Whip It Up” Anthology’s VIP Release at Total E-Bound will be in late September 2013.

Menage Snippet from Venetian Love Knots #SatSpanks

OTK Sat Spanks-dusty rose This week I’m sharing the beginning of the menage scene from Venetian Love Knots. In this scene Cole has found another partner to join Allison and him in a threesome. However, Allison is blindfolded, wanting her new partner’s identity to remain unknown, feeding the “stranger” fantasy aspect of the encounter. She has no idea the man is Nico, the hot Italian guy she has begun to fall for.

Venice twilight

It looked as though Cole was tying Allison’s wrists to the top of the bedpost, but Nico couldn’t really see because Cole was blocking his view. Cole told Allison to spread her legs and when finally he moved, what Nico saw was a vision of loveliness.

Allison was displayed with her arms bound above her head, standing legs apart, her pussy folds wet and available. She still wore her bra, but it had been pulled down, her ample breasts spilling over the top. Her eyes were blindfolded by a white lace scarf. Her bottom was red and tender, Nico guessed from being spanked.

Down the Rabbit Hole Again

Welcome to this week’s Sneak Peak Sunday and Sunday Snog.

Sneak Peak Sunday

Last time, I shared with you a sweet first kiss between Allison and the Italian hunk, Nico. Today’s scene features Allison’s ex-boyfriend the rodeo cowboy who is dying to win her back.  At the beginning of this scene Allison has finally come face to face with Cole in Venice. Dreading this moment, she literally bumps into him as she’s coming out of the ladies room in the hotel lobby.

Here’s the excerpt:

He held on to her as though she were an unruly child. “Nico and I go way back. It’s only fair that I told him my intentions where you were concerned. Can’t go lettin’ the man get his heart broken, can I? Please,” Cole pleaded. “Go up to my room with me, and we’ll have a little talk. Just talk.”

“Since when have we ever just talked?” Allison snapped angrily, holding back.

“Well, we don’t have to just talk.” Cole pulled her to him tightly, grabbing her waist and bringing her pelvis towards his as he kissed her hard and deep.

When they finally untangled their tongues from their passionate embrace, Cole whispered in her ear, “Come with me, baby. Please come with me.”

Allison felt herself falling down that same dark rabbit hole again.

Venetian Love Knots – Spanking Excerpt

OTK Sat Spanks-dusty roseI’m so happy to be back on Saturday Spankings. I had such a blast last time visiting all the participants. Definitely check out all the other blogs here for lots of spanking fun.

Today’s excerpt picks up where the last one left off. Allison is getting her first spanking from ex-love Cole in my new release, Venetian Love Knots.

Thwack! Her ass was bright pink.

“Four!” she cried out.

Thwack!

“Three!” Her voice high-pitched.

Thwack! Cole had moved to the top part of her bottom now.

“Ahhh! Two!” Allison shrieked.

Thwack!

“One! Ohhh hoo hoo. Please stop! Please!” Allison’s cries were desperate.

“Are you begging me?” Cole’s voice was calm.

“Yes, yes!” she pleaded. “Please stop! Please.”

Cole rubbed her cherry-red bottom, caressing it gently and yet with pressure at the same time to give a salve to her aching flesh.

Venetian Love Knots Cover

Here’s the book blurb:

In Venice, Allison Fox will find love in the arms of two men. Her past collides with her future in a battle for her heart. Which one will win?

Traveling to Venice to be the maid of honour in her best friend’s wedding sounds like a great vacation, and a romantic way to spend Valentine’s Day. But when Allison Fox discovers who the best man is, she is torn between duty and self-preservation.

It has taken Allison four years to put her tumultuous relationship with the rodeo cowboy behind her. A violent incident ripped them apart. Now Allison must find a way to face her past and find closure with her old flame. But will she be able to put the past behind her?

Cole is the Texas cowboy who has never gotten over his love for Allison. But when he declares his love for her after all this time, is she strong enough to walk away from the intense passion they share?

For years Nico, a handsome Italian, was committed to nothing but his work. Nico never expected he would meet an American beauty who would awaken in him a desire to love again. Once he finds her, Nico vows to never let Allison go.

It will be a Valentine’s Day to remember, but who will win Allison’s heart?
