Self-Quarantine/Lockdown Special
It looks like we're all going to need something to read, so The Portable Ray Tatum will be available for 99cents this coming Thursday (make that Wednesday), March 11. That's five complete novels, each with far too many words (to be read while listening to Lester Young).
Ray might be the best sort of coronavirus company since he never panics, prefers saying nothing, and is partially pickled.

Also Serpent of Old will be free for the taking tomorrow, the 10th, if Ray's not your thing.

A Taste of Something New (available for a few more days)
---I'll be taking this excerpt down shortly. The complete novel will be out in four or five months.----
I've made the opening chunk of the novel I'm working on available as a 99cent Kindle book. We're talking 60 pages of prose, so you can decide if it's worth your bother.
This isn't altogether finished copy. You grammarians hold your fire.

Warwolf Will Be Free for the Taking on 12/5
That's the electronic version of one of my favorite Ray Tatum novels, which came within an inch of being the basis for a network TV show until the usual people lost the usual nerve.
I might not be able to sell it, but I can sure give it away. Download a copy. It's a hoot.

Free for the Taking
East Jesus South will be free to download from Amazon this coming Sunday, the 4th. So pick up a copy of Sleepaway for two bucks and have a copy of EJS on me. It's still creepy. I checked.

Stella's Book (with an inevitable update)
A few months ago when I was casting around for something to write, my dear dog Stella developed a limp she couldn't quite shake. At first, the vet treated it like a sprain, but it never improved, only got worse. Then the swelling started, and the tumor came. Not a sprain at all. Osteosarcoma. That's a dire disease in a dog, aggressive and usually fatal. The only option was to amputate the affected leg and hope the cancer hadn't spread. So that's what we did.
The limp started in November, and the surgery was in March -- the stretch of time when I was writing Sleepaway. I was determined to tell a story about decent people making the right choices and doing the right things because that's the only kind of story I could live with, and I took my muse where I found her, often blundering through the surf or upside down on the bed.
From now on when people new to my work ask me which of my books they should read, Sleepaway is the one I'll point them to. Partly because it's brief and wistful and turned out very much like I'd hoped, but chiefly because it's Stella's through and through. This may not be a book about a dog, but it was certainly inspired by one.
As I write this, Stella is doing pretty well. She's frisky on some days, balky on others, but she still knows who she knows and barks at everybody else. About all I can do is hope for the best, not my usual calibration, but I'm giving it a go.
While people are all right in their way, there's not much that beats a dog.

So much for hope. Stella’s cancer spread into her lungs and made appallingly quick work of her. Early this July morning, Stella went out on her shield even if it looked like a patch of linoleum in an over-lit exam room. She was a great girl and a near constant companion, tough duty with a cranky old guy like me. I think I'll head for a dark corner and be heartbroken for a while.

The link for ebook preoders is below. The paperback edition will be available on or around pub date, July 21st.

Sorry For The Delay
Sleepaway has been out with a couple of editors for five or six weeks. No response that I know of. This is a brief novel, more of a novella really, so I have my doubts about it fitting in with anybody's publishing plans. But I'm sitting on my hands for the moment, doing what I'm told (for the moment).
Also, Goodreads used to include a reader count at the bottom of each blog entry, which I found to be a useful gauge of what was interesting to you and when most everybody who was going to read an entry had read it, but one day that feature just disappeared.
When I asked why, I was told I could get a similar measure of reader involvement by way of likes and comments, so I went back and looked at an archived blog entry: 580 readers, 10 likes, 18 comments. Perhaps one of you could do that math for me since I can't begin to figure it out.
So if my blog entries are ill-timed and spotty, it's because the site has been "improved".
And FYI -- all of my books that are available at Amazon are now also available through B&N, Apple, Kobo, etc., in both physical and electronic editions at the customary low, low prices.
I'll check back in when I know something. In the meantime, I'll assume you're seeing this.

Short(ish) Novel Coming Soon(ish) [Expect Delays]
Young Delray (age 11) has an adventure. It leaves a mark.
Since everybody else has an origin story, why not Ray Tatum? Think Heart of Darkness but, you know, funny and with kids.
** My book agent has decided to circulate this novel among a few editors, which will take a little time. It may well be of no interest to them, but it's worth the trouble because trade publishers have the resources to at least attempt to get books reviewed, and press for one title helps all the other titles.
So Sleepaway will soon be available one way or another. I'll certainly keep you posted.
